i will agree somewhat.. a crossbow is much better for hunting, and you have alot more range with the added advantage of being mostly silent... a crossbow has its place, but in a survival/pack out situation... If I had to choose, and couldnt take both.. it would be the flaregun hands down..

This is completely legal. This is considered a pistol if handgun or rifle ammo is used. If shotgun ammo is used it is an NFA item and just has to be registered

Ariete is making a sight mount for the vz 44, you can put a rail on it. If you made that with a 26" piece of pipe, it would be legal to have laying around. More than long enough bbl. More than than long enough OAL

I got one of those flare guns (though his is in far better condition with like the numbers filled in). It seems like a pretty solid gun but I doubt I'd ever want to fire a 12 gauge out of it unless I had no other choice. It does seem like a good idea to adapt it to like .22, a good backup survival gun that I could take out hiking and not have a fit if I happen to lose it or something.

from what I understand,as long as the insert that makes the flare gun able to shoot live ammo like the 12 gauge,etc. is not in the flare gun it's perfectly legal and doesn't either require a permit or registration,but as soon as you drop that insert in it becomes a firearm that will be treated as such by the police and the courts

You are correct..the flare gun is a flare gun...but when you put the adapter in the flare gun...it is now?? A weapon..??..take the adapter out of the flare gun..you can no longer FIRE real bullets out of it.?? I made a modification like this with a 22 barrel & 3/4 inch pipe! I made the firing pin off center cause the bbl was dead center. I also ball peened the end of the pipe to make a rim for ejection! I am working on this type of mod for my new polish gun. I am going to permanently seal my modified pipe & 9mm DINA rifled insert so the ATF wont have heart burn about it! I noticed you didn't alter your pipe, just left it the normal size at the rim! Is there problems extracting the pipe?

I just watched a guy shoot a 12 gauge shell out of a flare gun on another channel. It didn't break his wrist but he did complain that it was quite painful to shoot. I'm wondering about mini shells. Do the have less kick?

Flare pistol inserts are only legal, according to BATFE regulations, if they are rifled. I believe the use of the pipe (smooth bore) are prohibited. If the adapters are rifled, I don't think it is a problem! Hippie Cletus mentions illegality under other circumstances.

He was wrong about his statement! When you buy the sub calibers you get a letter from the ATF explaining the rules of it. You can have this in your backpack and the sub caliber in your pack seperate and you will NOT get 10 years in jail or a fine. However if you have the sub caliber in the flare gun when checked they can charge you with a firearm if you have a felony or for some reason you cannot own a firearm. As long as the sub caliber is not in your flare gun you are fine! .... Needed to clear that up if anybody is thinking about having this in their pack!

Well, I agree that arbitrary laws are silly, but subcaliber devices are cheap, available, and legal in about 37 states as of 2019. You can even find people making 3d printed sights that along with the inserts, easily help convert the surplus flare guns in to a usable firearm. If following in the path of P.A. Luty and making a statement in that realm is your wish, I bid you the best of luck though. The flare pistol, if teamed up with a long enough barrel to match the length regulations, could make for a legal and more effective home brew 12 gauge in the same spirit as those phillipine guerrilla shotguns. In any case, an interesting video.

Depends on how you look at it actually! It can still fall under a flare gun even with pipe inside it! But the pipe can not be removable! Honestly that would never survive a 12 gauge shell of any kind to start with and if it did not many times after first. But if that pipe is not removable and is fixed like welded at one end. Still considered to be a flare gun. Just modified. Once you toss a sub cal inside that r 12 gauge round it's now a Class one fire arm. I know People will say they fucking think I'm nuts but! Still a flare gun with smaller barrel. Unless you can prove otherwise or live gun style rounds are shot out of it. But the case saying is. This unit could not sustain gauge round and is not it's intended use! If was not true! You would not be able to buy a 12 gauge flare gun either!

I suspect that if you tried to fire a 12 gauge slug from such a short barrel that most of the powder will end up on the ground, unburned and the slug will tumble along the ground, stopping within a few meters or so. That is exactly what happened when I constructed a 6 inch barrel out of iron pipe nipple and a threaded cap. The ammo was several electrically fired 10 gauge solid slug rounds from a full box that a friend had given me. He got them from the steel mill he worked in where they were used to blast solidified slag out of the huge ladles and furnaces. He said that the guns that fired these shells looked like long military chain guns, but were fired in semi-auto mode, remotely, exactly like I tried to fire them, sometime in the late 70's. My 6" electric pipe gun was clamped solidly to a length of 2 inch pipe, hammered 2 feet into the ground in an abandoned Alabama limestone quarry. A small screw threaded through a nylon spacer in the threaded cap made perfect contact with the primer. A 125 foot length of blasting wire connected to the screw and the pipe ran back to my firing position, behind a gravel berm. The barrel was set up so that the slug would impact the limestone face of the quarry, about 50 feet away. When I twisted the handle of the blasting machine, the big bang I expected sounded more like a wet blanket dropped on the floor. I raised my head just in time to see the slug skitter to a stop about 10 feet from the wall. Unburned powder was everywhere. Underwhelming, to say the least. Three more attempts were met with the same results. I imagine that using a longer barrel might do the trick, but I'm older now and have better things to do with my time.

I’ve actually fired a .38 special adapter from an Orion flare gun. I fired it numerous times from the plastic flare gun. I believe it didn’t blow up because the adapter was smooth bore. Weeks later I had ordered a 9mm adapter that was rifled.. the flare gun ended up blowing up into little pieces. It was a good thing that I had it rigged with some fishing line. Otherwise I would’ve lost a hand😬

Just slide down a legal length three-quarter inch pipe just as long as it's over 26in it's fine also if I'm not mistaken check your local laws it would be classified as a 12 gauge firearm not a shotgun under the law due to thefact that it was never a factory made shotgun nor was it modified from a shotgun and since it would be over 26 inches does not classify it as a (AOW) but as a firearm

Can you signal with your fancy crossbow without starting a brush or grass fire? multi purpose, and probably a 10th the size/ weight, and reset time of your bow.. Probably the same year I bought every 12GA to X adapter I could find for my break-action. Looks like I never got an answer to what keeps the pipe in the barrel. Maybe he used JB weld or something. Czech Vz44/81 Flare Guns probably cost twice as much now as almost a decade ago.

It's great fun to shoot. I went to my pops house, we took turns shooting old coffee cans off the fence posts with the 410 adapter. The 410 adapter can also take the 44 long colt.. I didn't shoot that though, as it would travel further than bird shot. It's very loud too.. so.. signaling purposes there also..

With the breach lock on these flare gun designs you don't want to exceed 15k psi with a cartridge base greater than .47" diameter. That equates to 2,600 pounds of force when fired, or 2:1 safety ratio. A 12 gauge at 13k psi load is 5,200 pounds of force when fired; less force acting on a much greater surface area. The flare guns are only suitable for 45LC and .410 due to physics and the associated material strength in the design. Hell, a small round like 9mm is 35k psi, is 3,800 pounds of force - which isn't recommended either. 45LC and .410 don't even break 14k psi. The reason 12 gauge shell adapters exist, again, is due the the physics involved. They are meant for 12 gauge weapons. In short, use the proper 26.5mm adapters in the specified calibers - not adapt the flare gun to shoot 12 gauge, then to use 12 gauge inserts. You are dancing with injury, son.

How accurate are you, and others I've seen on YT, when you make the statement that "... you'd probably break your wrist" when referencing shooting 12 gauge with one hand? I would argue that the human body is not as fragile as that. Has anyone done such a thing and if so, how much of a kick was there? Garry Robinson I have shot a friends flare gun like the one in this video. I first made up some 1/2 load 12ga rounds and shot them. Pretty mild so I tried a couple 2&3/4 bird shot shells. They did kick quite a bit more but it was still manageable (although after 2 rounds I did not want to do it again). The real problem was after shooting these rounds, the flare gun started acting up. It would not stay cocked unless you pulled out on the trigger. You could tell that even then the sear was barely catching! The 26.5mm flare gun was not designed to shoot the heavier 12ga rounds and probably flexed enough to bend the inner steel frame of the pistol. Bottom line? It's not dangerous to shoot 2&3/4" shot shells (in a emergency) but 3" magnums or slug rounds might be another outcome!

+Silver Sasquatch A 12 ga shotgun is much larger and heavier than a flare pistol. A flare pistol will be damaged by any sized 12 ga shell. Yes, your wrist will be fine (but sore). In a SHTF scenario, I want my weapon to keep working. Even if it's a flare gun. Stick with the .410 for the flare gun.

+SILVER SASQUATCH at 14 i was shooting my dads browning auto 5 1 handed with slugs and had 25 round bandoleers full when going out and coming back empty. learned to do it pretty well. later was shooting sawed off 12 gauges single handed everything from single barrel to ithica pumps. took a 410 snake charmer (that was the model) and removed the forearm then taped the tack welded screw holder on the barrel and it fell right off, then sawed it off with a 3.5 inch barrel. one night at 2am the game warden showed up to return 2 guns to me after i paid my fine, and i came out of the log cabin with just shoes, cut off pants and the 410 sawed off as i had no idea who was outside. just stuck it in my waist and signed for my guns. i had long beard, long hair and tatted like 70% of my body. that was 1982 in arkansas 10 miles from the highway, my closest neighbor was 5 miles closer to the highway. thing is, that flare gun will handle a 12 gauge slug with no problems, been there and done that! im almost 60 now!

If the inserts are not "rifled" it is an AOW or SBS according to the ATF. See the letter here from ATF: kennesawcannon.com/images1/batf.pdf I know that it is specific to a .22 adapter but, it still applies. Rifling is the key. That said, if the inserts are "rifled" and, you are allowed to purchase and own a pistol, you may legally use the inserts as far as BATFE is concerned. State and local laws might say different. Be careful folks.

The gray area is that adapters of this type are made to go into a full sized shotgun, not a flaregun.. this setup is considered illegal unless you purchase a tax stamp or make your barrell longer than 20" i believe.. OK, you guys do what ever you want to do. No skin off of my back. I know that when the SHTF it won't matter one way or, the other. Just be aware that the ATF can use the term INTENT if, they want to, when they find you in possession of the items needed to be in violation of the NFA. Will they? I don't know, my crystal ball is broke. Can they? Yes. Also, why not just get the rifled inserts so you can do it without any worry? I have the smoothbore .22 insert that fits into a .410 shotgun and you can't hit the broadside of a barn with it. Same with the .32 and 9mm. I have a rifled 12 gauge to .38 Special that is very accurate. I do have an insert that allows you to fire a .32 ACP in a .303 British and it works quite well since the bore is rifled and a close match to the .32 ACP bullet diameter. Anyway, I am not telling anyone to do or not do anything. Be well and safe. And, try not to be so angry.

You are incorrect good sir, the Taurus judge and the Smith and Wesson Governor are both chambered for .410 bore and are considered only handguns, NOT short barreled shot guns in the eyes for the BATFE. also most chamber adapters for flare guns into .410 bore come with a letter from the BATFE stating that putting the adapter into a flare pistol makes it a handgun, not a shot gun.

+Hunter Compton Stop with the "break your wrist" bull unless you have some experience to share. Light 12 ga rounds (low brass mini shells) will kick crazy, but not harm the shooter. Repeated use will damage a flare pistol. Illegal? Yes. Bad for the gun. Yes. But if it's a last ditch deal, it will work effectively. For repeated use, the .410 is legal and safe. For one time defense, a 12 ga shell would work just fine.

If everyone checks out the videos on these home built slam fire shotguns you will learn that the bore of this 3/4" pipe is larger than your factory 12 gauge bore resulting in a lot of gas blow by which results in lower recoil as well as a reduced velocity and knock down energy of the round you fire through it. Combine it with low wall brass rounds and it is very manageable. The legality will always remain the issue. Instead of complaining here on line send a certified letter of complaint to your congressional representatives. If enough people complain maybe we can get the laws changed.
