I was convinced I wanted the second cover and kept trying to stash away extra money for one. After awhile I simply purchased the a model like the first one you installed in the video. It has been great. Never an issue, only leaks slightly in a high pressure car wash, never leaks in rainy situations at all. When I want full use of my bed it just comes off in like 5 minutes. One day I did an unplanned furniture purchase. Took off the cover behind the furniture store, put the two piece sectional inside, threw the folded cover in the back, and strapped everything down. So simple, flexible and easy. I would totally do the first option again and again knowing I never leave any valuables in the bed anyway.

@@travisa1326 Mine has held up very well in my opinion. In my neck of the woods we see High 90's in the summer and sometimes below freezing in the winter. It is starting to look a tad dull but I am sure a good cleaning and some treatment would make it shiny again. It is still leak free which amazes me. For the cost it looks like it will last over two years maybe closer to four. At that point if it got too weathered I would buy another one.

I purchased the retractable cover for my F250. Having used it for a few years now, I’ve decided I’m going with option 2 (hard/fold) for my incoming pickup. The retractable version ended up being impractical, heavier, and took up too much bed space. Option 2 makes the most sense, especially with the ability to fold it all the way up while driving. Great review btw, you helped me firm up the decision.

I've had varies covers for different trucks. I had a snap on cover for my Dodge Ram. That one was nice because it was easily removable. But in the winter months you had to take it off or on, I had to put it in the sun so it would stretch to snap it back on. My 2nd cover was a roll top cover I had on my 2011 Silverado. It also was easy to take on and off (open and close). But I had issues with it leaking. My 3rd cover I love the best, I bought a Diamond Back cover for my 2016 Silverado and this thing is tough. It's the most expensive but no leaks, and it's indestructible. It comes in 3 pieces, and it's held on with 4 clamps. There is video's out there that this cover is nearly impossible to break into. The HD Edition can hold up to 2500 lbs on top and you can still open your tailgate. Great video guys. I've ordered from Real Truck before, and they are amazing.

Thanks for the details. I had a low end soft cover that lasted about 4yrs until it blew off while driving high speed on a highway...yea, that happened. Fortunately, no one or thing was hurt. Now finding the "better" products on the market today are making it challenging to be satisfied due to a lack of them being 'simple'. Also, finding deck rail systems from the truck manufacturer are playing into the install and functionality of these current covers. May just stay with a cheap cover again. Easy install, full use of the stock deck rail, and easy to remove when needing the full bed....

One thing I'd like to point out, is, for the hard folding cover, because it can only be opened from the inside it doesn't need it's own lock. The lock on the tailgate protects the latch, and therefore if your gate is locked so is your cover. It is plenty secure.

Thank you for the video! I appreciate the well explained intro of each model 👍 ! My comment to the manufacturer: 1. The basic version can have a better folding design, instead of the existing tri-fold design make it a Z-fold design so the inside/under side of the cover never face against the outer/upper side collecting dust... 2. The middle MX model, instead of the two clearly visible "manual" rods to prop the cover open, they can be relocated to the end of the cover (behind the rear window) so the mechanisms (rods & secure screws) are less visible. 3. The most expensive version, for the price, the design could at the least also include a self retraction (i.e. spring loaded like a roll-up window blind and cab stop at any position etc.) function so make it more worthy of $2k. Sincerely.

Second one is back-flip knock off. That said it is the clear winner. On mysecond one. First one lasted 7 years before the sun destroyed the material. I'll take seven years of service. I like that you can sit on the cover if it is folded even once. I like to fold it twice to put on my muck boots when hunting. Or to just hang and eat a snack or something while in the field. It also works great for hauling my quad. protects window from any back window accidents. This cover is also lockable if youe tailgait locks as the tailgait needs to be open in order to access the cover. Lastly along the lines of having room on the sides for his handhold to get up. The backflip design has availability for a cargo rack. So i can haul my quad and my conoe at the same time without taking off the cover. All in all the back flip design is a clear winner for me.

I've owned both a retractable one on a truck and a used soft tri fold. I found that the soft tri fold kept things dry and never got messed with. So it kept things out of sight out of mind. I normally keep a multi function ladder in my bed. So on my latest 2020 f150 lariat, I went with a brand new Tyger trifold soft cover. It was easy to install and I know I can easily take it off in a moment should I need to. It currently looks great and my last f150 had a soft trifold that was at least 4 years old and was a bit dull looking, but I never treated it or conditioned it at all. Thanks for all the work you did to put this together..!! I generally, only carry loose items, or maybe some weekend gear for camping or boating, so just being Out of Sight is good enough.. BUT if a boat or jet-ski is in tow... some people might get curious. But as you sort of touched on, I carry motorcycles rather often. and they are pretty close to 7 feet long by the time you include the tires and wheels. So I NEED the full 6' 4" of length, even with the tail-gate down. So all of the space used to stow the fold-up and roll-up makes it next to impossible to get a street bike loaded. But the basic one, I can take off and lay it beside the bike(s) during transit. And I would not want to travel with the back window blocked, so I can not see the bikes. (I drive Semi's, buses, and lots of other vehicles, so I am very capable with mirrors. But I like to be sure that bikes are riding stable... So your information is Very Helpful. Thanks again.

Also, how secure is the cover with the tailgate locked?
@prasmussen82934 жыл бұрын
@@b737driver8 we had very heavy rain a few days ago. I looked and sure enough there was water inside by the tailgate. I saw a drop hanging from the drain channel so that is probably the source. Not sure what to do about that- the water has to get out, especially in the winter. I did not see water anywhere else so storing things away from the tailgate might be the best option.
@prasmussen82934 жыл бұрын
Sorry I did not answer your other question regarding security. Near as I can tell it is secure. It someone wants to get in they will, but it would take some effort. It is probably as secure as it could be given what it is.

I had a hard cover tri food I hated it so much that I wound up just giving it away.? The roll up covers just seem like a easy invitation. I’ve had them all on my trucks thru the years camper shell included. In my opinion the roll n lock was probably my best choice.
@TruckCentral3 жыл бұрын
Curious what your experience was with the camper shell - would you ever go that route again?
@CSltz3 жыл бұрын
@@TruckCentral it sure kept the weather out. But it was always in the way when I needed to haul something. Fire wood,rock mowers etc. plus I was always bent over to get anything out that had slid past the back of the wheel well. This wasn’t that big of a deal 40 years ago, But now…..

Id take a number 2 over any of the others. I like to be able to place a motorcycle in the bed as forward a possible to the cab and be able to possibly close the tailgate.
@Ishkatan7 ай бұрын
Can you stand on any of them to access stuff on the roof or as a boost up? I used to do that on my Avalanche that came with a 3 panel cover.
@TruckCentral7 ай бұрын
The hard folding cover is the sturdiest, especially closer to the edges as opposed to right in the middle. But why wouldn’t you just stand on the bedside or side of the truck with the door open? That’s where the truck is braced for a ton of weight.

Excellent idea for a video. I’ve been wanting a Locking tonOh cover or at a minimum a theft deterrent for stuff in the back if I have to stop en route to a customer. But I like the GatorFX one best. The #2 It’s a great compromise of loss of bed area and a hard shell cover.

So is the gator fx decent quality I’ve been looking at the Bak flip mx4 but it’s over 1k I dont want to spend that much but do I don’t want junk. Thx

The tarp option is tempting because of the price but I wouldn’t trust it for security purposes. Seams easily accessible by cutting through it with a knife. Still trying to decide on which one to get for my truck.

None of these. I like the AMP ones better. But if I had to choose I would do a soft cover because it doesn't lose bed space or block your back window.

Definitely not the most expensive one. 👍

I've had my backflip hard 4 section 8' tonneau for 4 years and it has been great. 99% of the time it remains closed and seals out the weather while looking sleek. I opted for it over the rollup version because I didn't want to loose any bed space and have not been disappointed.

Number 2. I have the GM accessory one like the 1st one, because it was on the truck from the dealer. Not a fan of the 3rd one for me. My elderly step dad would love it though.

with the hard tri-fold would a dirt bike fit without damaging the cover?

Have you reviewed Diamondback cover yet? I had a retrax aluminum on my old truck but the cage got bent and customer service didn't help at all. Love the look but need something that will handle off road as well.

I had the middle one. It was great but the stabilizer bars to hold it in full open position get sticky. I had to use pliers to loosen them up on occasion

I have putco bed rails already. Would this or any other tonneau cover work along with bed rails? The hand holds as you called them are where the bed rails go into and they are bolted from the inside of the bed by removing 4 of the plugs

I’d love to see a long term review of the middle grade tonneau cover. I used to have the cheap trifold one and it worked great. But the vinyl wore out after like 5 years and then I needed to get a new one.

For me it would have to be the 2nd one also because I have a toolbox in my 8ft bed so I need to have access to that plus it already limits what kind of cover I could put on.

RETRAX has had this since 2003. What's your improvement over RETRAX? - I'm referring to the locking in any position and drainage.

I have the retrax roll up. Looks great but catches on something internally and won't roll all the way. This happens about 1 out of 10 times. The worst thing is, it leaks. But reason I wouldn't buy it again is I didn't really consider how much I needed the whole bed, that I would need the 8 or so inches you lose in depth and width.
