Reminds me of the Bulova Lunar Pilot. No alarm on the BLP, however you get so much more with the Ultra High Frequency quartz movement (getting +6 seconds per YEAR) and awesome historical backstory 😎👍

Willard...the last thing I care about on a watch is an alarm. My smartphone is sufficient for that. The only thing that I don't like on the Bulova Lunar Pilot is that useless split-second chrono dial. Would be perfect with a 12-hour register.

I had a thing for the Orfina Porsche Design since I was a kid when I saw it on a friend's wrist. Prices are still insane for the original so I pulled the trigger today on the Dan Henry. Not the pvd coated because it invariably wears off. The stainless steel will do nicely thank you. Now I am waiting to arrive and even if it is by no means an investment, it is still the same beautiful shape that had impressed me back in the early eighties.

I got the 1970 orange 44. The only thing I don't like about it is how it looks on a NATO. 24mm lugs make for a strap that dwarfs the watch.

Have 40m 1970. Put it on a orange black and grey nato. Killer watch. Thought the tube was stupid at first but took it on holiday with two other watches. Loved it. The finishing on it is primo. The historical nods are brilliant and would love almost this whole collection. The 63 and 68 aren’t really my style but plan to get the others. Curious about the straps on 39 and 47. Wish I could try before I buy. But willing to ship if I didn’t like them

I own a 1970. For me, it's the details. The case back, the lume on the minute track, the knurling on the crowns, even the watch roll it's served up in. I'm very new when it comes to watch collecting but I can see they packed a lot of watch into this.. watch, for a very good price.

Great honest review! So glad to finally see a review of this watch on YT. I own a 1963 and I'm completely happy with the quality and design put into this watch esp at this price point. The devil is in the detail! I just love it. Now, I did have a movement issue almost a year in, extremely rare for a Miyota quartz movement to fail but shit happens and through several very pleasant emails with the man himself, I had my watch back in no time, (well Canada Post did go on strike but that wasn't Dan's fault) and it is once again working flawlessly. I hope to own another one of his watches, I'm just waiting for the right specification recipe.

Jody, happy New year to you and thanks very much for carrying out a review of the DH 1972. I took a chance and ordered mine last year, as I have a DH 1970 which I was impressed with and had read a few 1972 owner reviews on forums. I couldn't find reviews on you tube anywhere. I believe you've provided another balanced view. I ordered the silver version as the look, including blue second hand is reminiscent of a 1974 omega mk iv speedmaster I always lusted after. I had a query on the reset of the second hand, when I recieved the watch, and Dan Henry himself got back to me by E Mail (I hadnt read the instructions as usual!). We corresponded afterwards a few times about watches in general, which added big time to the buying experience. Overall I'm very happy with the watch, one pick I do have is the 50m WR. As a tool watch they should have gone for 100M minimum in my opinion. Apart from that I'm loving mine and like the feel and function of it. Great start to the 2019 reviews, look forward to seeing what you've got coming up next. Thanks again, Scott

Just received mine yesterday and I LOVE IT! A few fun facts about the original Porsche Design Orfina: - It was designed by Ferdinand A. Porsche, the designer of the Porsche 911 and grandson of founder Ferdinand Porsche. - It was the first all-black watch EVER! - It's one of Mario Andretti's favorite pieces. Great videos, except for that horrid Red Sox t-shirt :)

I have a DH 1939, the same you reviewed. My brother bought it for me as a gift after I said how much I liked it. I love the watch. If I could change anything it would be to make the sub dials larger and have sapphire. It has domed glass so it was asking to be scratched. I have only one scratch which fortunately lines up with the chronographs second hand so I'm the only one who ever notices it. The other issue I have is that the included NATO is too short for my wrist. Not sure why they would include a second strap that isn't as long as the leather. Oh well, still love it.

I've had this watch for about a year and a half and wear it frequently. I LOVE IT. Since I wear my fair share of Casio digitals, the alarm feature is a very welcome feature to me. Same moans and niggles as you, Jamie - most importantly wishing it was 100m WR rather than 50. As a flight instructor who grew up watching Top Gun, I'll have and love this watch forever, and feel the same toward my wife who gave this to me as an AMAZING Christmas present :)

Thanks for the review of this DH 1972. I have learnt my lesson with a black PVD coated watch. The coating gets scratch rather easily (not very durable) and it becomes an eye sore thereafter. For me, I have a couple of "black watches" and I will only get the DLC (Diamond Like Carbon) ones. Much more scratch resistance, although it might not do much if you bump your watch into a lady with a diamond ringed finger at the mall 😄
@jasonlim1409
@jasonlim1409 5 жыл бұрын
Bought this watch last week. Nice watch but I agree that the PVD coating on the bracelet is sub-par. Another issue for me was the difficulty in sizing the bracelet. I was not able to remove some of the link pins and had to go back to the shop I bought from for help. I suspect that the PVD coating made the link pin holes smaller. The shop had difficulty removing the link pins as well and agreed to replace the bracelet.

I was all set to get the 1970 Compressor Diver, but after watching your review I bought the 1939. I am very happy with it, and it is my go to watch in dressier settings. I still have the Compressor Diver itch as I always liked the look of Lip Nautic-Ski watch, but price and larger wrists means I still have an eye on the Dan Henry 1970 44mm.

I'm a fan of the concept that Dan Henry employs. Sort of an amalgamated homage. This one runs pretty close to straight up copy of the Porsche. I'll pass on this one. I do own a Dan Henry 1970 44mm with the orange. Love it. I wanted a compression style diver as something different aesthetically and that hits it in spades. I've come very close to pulling the trigger on the previous model you reviewed. Still might.

I have the 1964 evil panda and it looks fantastic. It's really well built for the price and my only regret is that the lug corners are so sharp. I don't really understand the choice since the original Breitling Top Time certainly doesn't have it. Even so, I am on the waiting list for the 1962 panda. I agree with Jody that it's quite practical to have a few quartz pieces.

I'm a bit of a fan-boy of DH watches with the 1939, 1963 and 1964 models firmly in my collection. Sadly, I think this is about the only model in the range that isn't calling me. That has more to do with the fact that 70s style watches are really not my bag - maybe because I was around in the 70s. But styling wise this just isn't floating my boat, it has a kind of over generic look to it and no dazzle in my opinion. You can pick up any amount of similarly styled Seikos for way less. Well done for being the first to have this up for review Jody, surely a sign of your growing influence

My experience of Dan Henry watches is this A few months ago i got the Gran Turismo Chronograph Evil Panda. When i received the watch i realized that it was not easy to tell the time under "normal" light conditions. The hands seem to disappear on the dial and i would have to tilt my hand to make them more visible. I was also very surprised that the chrono seconds hand was so dark blue and non existent because of the effectively ( from the crystal coating? ) dark blue dial. I tried wearing it for a couple of weeks but but things didnt get better, i couldn't use it. I really liked the size of it and the Breitling top time that was most probably was the "inspiration". In the end i decided that i would just have the hands painted white ( hour, minute, counting seconds chrono). It turned out quite good and was able to wear it and actually use it. Now for the ..fun part After i saw an interview with Dan Henry online i was amazed when he mentioned that for that particular watch he went over 30+ prototypes to get it right!???!! I posted a picture of my watch and posted pictures of the Breitling saying that the hands where white and and how on earth could you have the chrono hand dark blue??? He did bother to answer. " You are the only one that cannot tell the time and i ( Dan ) can see it clearly 3 meters away." " My watch is......perfect " actual words.... So shut up, Dan makes perfect watches and that's it.

My opinion: DON'T BUY the Dan Henry 1972! I own it, and I've seen watch reviewers like tgv and Jody recommend this piece after playing with it. Here's the rub. There's two glaring issues that are common to every watch with the 1972, and one seemingly common minor one. The minor one first seems to be a common problem I've seen on forums where the plastic collar on one of the subdials comes loose and makes the hand useless. I had to send mine back to Dan's official repair shop to get it fixed. The second is that the alarm is practically useless. Mine is off by 9 minutes, and when I contacted Dan about this he said that was within spec and I was out of luck. The thing is, it's CONSISTENTLY 9 minutes ahead, which means they simply don't take the time to get the alarm hand right. They just get it close enough and move on, and refuse to fix it. The last is that the blue chronograph second hand doesn't even come close to lining up with the indices because it has about a quarter second of play. If you change the watch orientation you can see it move back and forth. Again, I contacted Dan about this. He wrote, "for the blue hand It's not an alignment problem, the hand has a little play because of the gear size and there is nothing we can do about it, all these movements are the same..." He later says that Miyota admits the problem but won't make it public... So although the case, bracelet, and finishing are very nice on this watch, Dan Henry is stuck with a quality control problem from the Miyota factory, and won't honor requests for returns of this manufacturer's defect. None of the watch reviewers have caught this. Jody, if you see this, I can provide you with the email chain from Dan for proof. I don't want anyone else stuck in this position.

I wish I read your comment before buying this. I just got mine a couple of days ago--I like the design and the size, but I'm ready to return it because the alarm doesn't go off--I've tried setting it several times according to the instruction manual. Also, the red chrono hand doesn't line up with the markers. (My $39 Timex lines up perfectly.) So I emailed Dan Henry requesting a return code. His response? Because I'm over 50 (not sure how he would know that) I just can't hear it because my hearing is not good and that I should download a decibel meter phone app and ask for the help of somebody younger! He adds "sorry for my bad English, I'm not a native speaker." Not sure if I'm communicating with Dan Henry himself or someone else named Dan. I'm going to pursue the return but this leaves a bad taste regarding his customer service. I will definitely not be buying another DH watch.

@@ludovicoc7046 Hey there. He may be right, the tone is very high pitch. The red Chrono hand is the one that apparently has the loose gear. As for speaking with Dan directly, I believe he is Brazilian.

I'm just starting to get into watches. Just bought a Chinese watch that looks pretty just to have something to wear. I'm thinking about my first real watch and probably the Orient Bambino Version 4 Blue face. Anyway, great videos, learning a ton.

Jody, missed you're first post of the year, Happy New Year. I'm not sure about this one, I have the same niggles as yourself on this one..more lume, AR Coating, & what's going on with that bracelet? Micro brands got to do better, In saying that. Cool review as ever 👍

Henry 1939 black and a 1964 silver panda. $220 for the 1939 and $250 for the 1964. Very good value. The blue coating on the 1964 with the domed crystal is gorgeous. I had a minor issue and dan emailed directly excellent service. My only niggle is I hope Dan changes the branding from his full name to just initials. Similar to Christopher Ward.

The 6 o’clock ticking seconds doesn’t quite hit the tick marks. It drives me a bit batty when quartz watches do this.

Yeah. You can even find the odd Omega quartz with misaligned second hands. Tissot has it in promotional videos on their official channel 😆... Seiko seems to get it right quite consistently though, and Citizen usually does a good job as well. Yet I see many misaligned Miyotas. Which is weird... Maybe QC is better on the ones that go in Citizens own watches.

Yes, I own a Dan Henry 1970. In fact, it's on my wrist now. It's got decent build quality with a comfy silicone strap. The crystal is a sapphire coated dome which gives the dial a nice distortion when viewed at different angles. The movement is the reliable Seiko NH35. It's consistently twenty seconds slow per day. So far, so good.

@Just One More Watch First, thanks for your great videos! I know it’s an old video, but you say 48,5 lug-to-lug, but Dan Henry site says 45,7. Do you have some info where the difference in measurement might be? Often it happens with a protruding midlink, but seems strange here. 😊 any advice is appreciated. Best regards ❤️

Don’t have a Dan Henry buy I’m really interested in the 1970, as I’m looking for a diver. I’m hesitating though between the DH 1970 and the Phoibos Reef Master. Both are spec’d similarly and around similar prices.
