Today's video is a followup to my recent impulse buy of Dan Henry's most complicated and feature-rich watch-the Dan Henry 1972 Maverick. Many of you know I'm a huge fan of Dan's watches. I love the fun, value, and tasteful designs they offer that are difficult to beat at the affordable level. However, this time I was disappointed. Join me to find out why, in another independent, unbiased review where I share the positives and negatives of this super-fun watch that was inspired by Top Gun, Porsche Design, and glorious 70s and 80s chronographs. Although things didn't go to plan, is there still a chance this watch might steal my heart away from one of my current favorites-the Dan Henry 1962? And how does it compare to the current reigning king of chronographs under $500-my beloved Seiko Flightmaster (SNA411) aka The Mighty Flighty?

TGV, despite knowing how much you like DH (I do as well, I bought the 1939 and 1937 after watching your excellent reviews and because my late mum was born in 1939), you stay true to yourself and give a balanced opinion. Killer intro! The DH 1972 is a very good looking watch. What kills it for me are the 50m water resistance and the alignment issues with the chrono hands. I'd also prefer an F14 Tomcat on the caseback.

So glad to see you picked this one up! I love mine, TGV! This was the first Dan Henry that I fell head over heels for. Not the first or last I purchased, but definitely one of my favorites. Being a TopGun fanatic, I too was drawn to the watch due to its Porsche Design chronograph inspiration, but I didn’t want a used piece that I would have to wear with kid gloves. I HAD THE EXACT SAME ISSUE WITH MY 1972!! When I first received it, my heart broke. My watch did the exact same thing and I tried everything to fix it. I contacted Dan same day, and he had me send it to his authorized service center in NYC. Grand Central Watch had it serviced (replaced movement) and back on my wrist in a week. Mine has given me no problems since. I absolutely adore mine. I wouldn’t give it up for anything, but it does indeed make you nervous to open the box that way. Let him fix it, and all will be well, TGV. Sorry you had the same experience I had, but you will get to see how Dan Henry shines when it comes to customer service and making things right, as well. Hope you get it fixed and love yours as much as mine! You can see a bit of my experience here: www.watchuseek.com/threads/props-to-dan-henry-and-steinhart.5317069/#post-53610728

Nice thread on watchuseek, man. Dan Henry is a wise visionary entrepreneur and I guess this is a one-off problem. So far Dan Henry has focused his creations mainly on reinterpretations of classic chronographs so I would love to see a reinterpretation of the Enicar Sherpa in 38-39mm and also of other classic non-chronographs that we miss like Universal Geneve Polerouter. Cheers, mate.

I owned it for 3/4 year, wearing it quite a lot. I did not have exactly these QS issues, but my second hand did not EXACTLY align to the 12. It stood maybe 1/2 min off centre. Besides when running around the second hand did not hop in exact 1 sec steps, in the lower half of the dial it was jumping almost in the middle of the sec increments on the dial, while getting back „on track“ again in the upper half of the dial. I found the PVD to be quite durable, no issues whatsoever even scratched some walls with it without causing scratches on the watch. The Alarm did not align well - you always had to lead the alarm hand by a couple of minutes in order to get the alarm at the right time. I can confirm that the crown when pulled out wobbles alarmingly. I sold the watch again this autumn.

Hi TGV Very cool looking watch as usual from D.H. Totally get the point about going quartz for this kind of racing/aviation watches - with all the possibilities of functions that follows. Firstly, thanks for yet another great informative video. The Dan Henry is a nice looking watch and being a quartz movement doesn't put me off at least, as I'm unfortunately a Casio tragic. However, I will say though the issue with the movement is a little disappointing, as I have the $80 AUD Casio aviator chronograph that does not have any of these issues. I will admit it's not quite as complicated as the Dan Henry but for the price you'd expect better. BTW I love the waffle strap on your explorer, it think it would look good on one (or more) of my Duros.

About the chronograph minutes hand issue, I have a similar movement in one of my casios. Not sure if you noticed, when you are using the top pusher with the crown pulled out to reset the chronograph seconds hand, the small chronograph minutes hand also moves one minute every full rotation of the red seconds hand. So just hold the pusher for 30 full rotations of the seconds hand to set the small minutes hand back at zero.

That wobbly crown reminds me of Vostok watches. The crown decouples when pushed in to improve shock resistance if the crown is hit, and that gives them a wobbly feeling. This might not be the case here but that's what came to mind.

Yes, I had the same issue. For me, the chronometer didn't line up to zero and each seconds tick was more like 1.5 seconds. This corrected in the second 30 seconds of the minute. Unfortunately, in my line of work, measuring the first 15 seconds is crucial, which also rendered the watch useless for me. I emailed Dan and he said that this was a problem with the movement. That said, outside of the work setting, this watch is really good value to wear in terms of aesthetics. The only contemporary alternatives I could find with the same look is the Sinn 144, which is a few thousand dollars more, and the old second-hand Sinns and Porche Orfinas all have the PVD worn off. So from an aesthetics perspective, this watch is unsurpassable, so much so, that I purchased a second one with the different colours.

Loved the originals by Porsche design, sadly too young to have ever owned one - but they were stand out watches in the professionals tv show and Lewis Collins (best Bond that never was!) wore his in the iconic Who Dares Wins - where there was a great ‘wrist watch check scene’! 👍😎

I bought a 1964 Chrono from Dan Henry and the chronograph hand was off the 12 o clock by a small amount. I did find Dan Henry a little less than helpful when I contacted him about it, explaining that it was a 'common fault' with the movements, and wasnt willing to exchange because I had taken the stickers off the crystal. While it didnt bother me all that much in terms of the wearing experience, it did take a little of the magic out of the brand for me. The watches are so good in every other area, but the quality checking of the movements seems to be lacking.

I bought the silver version of the 1972 right at release. Didn't center. Felt cheap. Alarm uselessly soft. He made me jump thru so many hoops to return it, I will NOT be buying a Dan Henry watch ever again. I like his idea but the execution of the DH watches I've held feels much cheaper than others at their price point.

Fab production! Love the video.......watch surprised me too. Despite its alignment failing it looks great.

Nothing to do with the review or the watch, but the shot at 18:04 looks amazing! The glare makes it look very cinematic.

I have the exact same problem with the chronograph minutes sub dial, there is no way to align it, and it gets worse with the use of the chronograph. Mine sits now between 5 and 10 min. Also Dan Henry deleted the Disqus comment section on the watch movement instructions page, just because there were some people talking about the issue trying to figure if there was a way to align. Sadly mine is not under warranty anymore, i should have used the warranty right away when i first got it because out of factory there was already a slight misalignment, but since it was so small and i barely ever used the chronograph i though it wasn't necessary. Only much later when i started to give some use to the chrono i realized the problem was getting worse but by then warranty was gone.

The montage at the beginning is sick, should be DH's commercial for the watch

I'd take the limited edition part with a pinch of salt as far as Dan Henry is concerned, I bought a 1975 and a 1962 thinking that and then he changed the design and colour option slightly and banged out more.

Great review as always, TGV! Really love that waffle strap on your Explorer. I want an Explorer eventually, but always wanted one with an Oysterflex bracelet. What do you think? Would love your opinion; my daily wearer is a Seiko SNKL23 on Brown Colareb like you filmed!!!

Love this watch. Dan Henry nailed it again! The PVD version is unfortunately limited edition but a good watch if you can find one.

It's not a battery issue. It comes from using movement retaining rings that have too wide crown stem channels cut in the plastic ring, leading to a bit more freedom of movement for the the stem and thus the loose feel. For the most part this is caused by having a too long crown stem because the mvmt is much smaller than the case.

Great review as always TGV. I've been looking forward to this watch but I'm finding myself also a little disappointed. I feel in terms of design Dan Henry has nailed it, the look is pretty much perfect. I'm not sure I can get past the wobbly crown and the movement issues though. Its still great value but it's the first Dan Henry watch that has made me question Quality. So I find myself undecided.

I purchased this watch about a year ago after wanting the Porsche Orfina since been about 8 or 9 years old as it was the watch Bodie & Doyle wore in The Professionals, So far so good it fits on my wrist great and keep time spot on, I completely agree on the crown it is incredibly flimsy but apart from that for the price its a great watch and gave me something i wanted without spending ££££.
