With the 3000mah battery and The iflash 4 micro sd card board I was able to fit 500gb of storage and 3000mah battery in the 30gb thin ipod classic 5th gen but hand filing the metal internal aluminum frame that holds the pcb down to just a hair above the screw holes. I have a little gap left that i might be able to fit a bluetooth board in if i can find a compact enough one and solder the connections to ribbon cables rather than thicker cables. I'm also trying to get 30pin to hdmi adapter cause my Goal is to have a huge storage ipod that I can store loads of music and movies on with a crazy long battery life, so i can listen to music while driving then when i get to a hotel or my GFs house I can simply plug it into the tv and have like 200 movies ready to go. I've also found an app that lets me reformat dvd movies to a format that works with the 5th gen ipod and set to a resolution so that on the ipod it has 2 black bars but on the tv itl match 720p resolution

Cool mod, but there are a few notes I'd like to make: 1. The 7th generation iPod Classic uses a Cirrus DAC, whereas the 5th generation uses as Wolfson DAC. Most audiophiles agree that the Wolfson DAC sounds better. 2. The 5th generation iPod doesn't have that metal shield behind the display, and its faceplate is plastic, so you wouldn't have to cut out that little rectangle if you used a 5th generation. Additional notes: If you get a 5th generation iPod, make sure to get the 80gb version. The 30gb iPods have 32MB of RAM, while the 60/80gb have 64MB of RAM. This allows you to put as many tracks on it as you can on your 7th generation, while the 30gb iPods can only have half as many tracks loaded at once. The 80gb is the 5.5 gen, while the 60gb is the 5.0 gen, so that's why you should get the 80gb.

Hi Pendleton, I was able to do this mod using your wiring guide! Soldering into the battery connectors is TOUGH and I actually shorted one motherboard by bridging connections. Alternatively, anyone doing this for themselves can solder into the second black (or yellow) capacitor right above that battery connector, which has a much larger solder pad. I chose to and the only caveat is that bluetooth module cannot be turned on independent of the ipod. There's no use case where I would do this anyway so it's perfect.

Looks like top shelf work. Not sure about the blue tack (looks messy!) but whatever got you to your final product is great. I was really impressed with that little bit of push button ingenuity. The biggest issue with BT modding an Ipod for me has definitely been what to do re: pairing. With the push button adhered to the lock button, this becomes a non-issue. Perhaps some time soon.
@Pendleton1154 жыл бұрын
It's not that much thicker, maybe 3-4mm. It definitely looks a lot larger when compared to the thin back, but you quickly get used to it and honestly doesn't really impact its daily use. It's not a brick like the 20gb iPod Second Gen lol.

I followed all your directions. They were perfect. The only issues I have are that using the hold switch as a button made the hold slide brittle, it is easily pushed underneath the backplate - so I am going to cut a hole for the bluetooth button instead. The second issue is the bluetooth range... despite cutting a hole in the metal behind the screen, the range is poor - with stuttering even at pocket distance, I am thinking about how i might go about improving this

If the hold switch is getting pushed into the metal frame your button likely is to weak or not mounted close enough to the switch. It should exert some pressure onto it to make it harder to press in, but easy to flick from side to side. As for the Bluetooth Range make sure you've aligned the antenna behind the hole you cut in the screen protecter, or try removing it entirely. The type of Bluetooth Transmitter or headphones you are using can also be a factor.

@@Pendleton115 Interestingly enough I looked at how you put the board into the ipod antenna side toward the back of the ipod. When I closed the case with the board in that direction the reception was much better. I wonder if the bluetooth connection reflects off the back of the ipod provides a much stronger connection that way...
@Pendleton1154 жыл бұрын
@@dmc7554 This is definitely possible. Although more testing would likely be needed to confirm.

@Dan Christiani @Pendleton115 I get the same issue, when I put it in my pocket it cuts out sometimes even after removing the metal behind the screen. Did you find any fix for it? I even tried soldering on my own wire antenna but I get only slightly better results.

Curious if there might be a way to change the default name of the transmitter so that it read as say "Tim's iPod" when connecting. Excellent video, by the way. I think I will have a go at this, myself.
@Pendleton1154 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately I don’t think there are any transmitters that let you change the name. Although you may be able to contact the manufacturer and get them set up from the factory as such.

The real question is how you got Catalina running on an iMac g4
@HoLDoN4Sec4 жыл бұрын
hes probably just using the imac as a display for a mac mini somewhere around it or inside it (i'm aware of such a mod for these old imacs) the catalina patcher is only compatible with intel macs, so that would make sense tbh

This video and dankpods video both use the headphone jack with analog output, if any bluetooth ipod mod getting a direct digital line out will be a real perfect modification to me.

IFlash should make boards with BT built in. Those wrapping wires are liable to short out if they rub too much.

This would be a dream come true for me. I own a iPod Classic with 1 terabyte solid state storage. I would love to use it through bluetooth to pair with my Pioneer SX-750. I know a bluetooth can be added to the receiver, but didn't know the iPod could. Subscribed. :o)

Great video, Its probably just outside my skill set, a kit I could handle but the modifications required to make it work might be too problematic, I guess if I ordered multiples than the safety net of that would allow me to get the job done. The idea is firmly rooted now and even if I just do the giant battery upgrade alone with a thick back plate thats something. thanks for the tips, I'll be back some time to leave a reply of what I did with my system. :)

And with all your Futurama episodes to hand too, what's not to like? My only issue would be that all my videos have now been converted to HEVC to save space, but I imagine those wouldn't play on the classic.
@Pendleton1153 жыл бұрын
If you’re running MacOS 10.14 and older you can still convert any video within iTunes to work natively with your iPod Classic, if you’re running something newer there is third party software that allows you to do the same thing. :)

Some LPs come with downloads but not all do, and they don't always advertise the download. For instance, Back To Black Vinyl releases often have the download advertised on the front, but if you pick up a new Metallica LP it probably will include a download but it won't say so on the packaging.

Man, I love the ingenuity, but please stop dousing these types of mods in hot glue. If your solder joints don't hold on their own, they aren't good enough for a reliable connection anyway.
@Pendleton1154 жыл бұрын
Sure, let me know how your iPod holds up when the wires have no re-enforcement ;)
@Pendleton1154 жыл бұрын
Just to clarify, what you said is correct, but for the case of this mod I decided to re-enforce the wires with hot glue, as I plan on opening and closing this iPod quite often to work on it, as i bend the wires I don't want to put un neccesary strain on small joints. Hot glue protects them from this and can be removed quite easily if need be in the future. Also if you drop your iPod the hot glue can give a bit of impact resistance.

I did this a long time ago, less the BT module. I have the iFlash Quad though. After seeing this, I am thinking of adding a BT module. Think I can fit it? Also, does the BT module stay lit only when pairing? If so, the lights might be a good thing to let bleed through. If there's a separate power and pair LED, then maybe just DC the power LED?

Some good ideas. Few points - I'd want to use shielded wires as there's too much chance of contact between wires which can cause audio cutouts and even fires in the usage for power. The switch mod is a good one but you want to use epoxy resin not hot glue - that's not going to last long term.

I have a friend who has 5 iPods and I want to get one going again for him. His biggest issue is what to use for music management? As iTunes no longer supports any of this. He has a ridiculous amount of digital .wav files. I’m not sure how to deal with or direct him. He’s not too tech savvy. I’m descent tech savvy. But not to this sort of level. But I’m certainly not afraid. Thanks!

Question: Can you do that project with a 5.5 into a 7th gen iPod, and can you keep 3.5mm Audio Jock working together with BT ? So I can choose between plugging in headphone or connecting to BT devices ? How about sound over the pin connecter, that's untouched as far as I can tell ?
