I remember the one car I had cheap tyres on it was my first car which had 68hp and 175/80 R14 tyres. The tyres on it I discovered were £20 and totally useless, They made lots of noise when turning and they would understeer like mad and the back ones were tail happy too. Just mashing the throttle even when doing 15mph mid turn would cause understeer. Then my next car had much better tyres and ensured I would never have cheap nasty tyres again.

Funny and true! People I know got new wheels for their cars, like €1500 for just a set without the tires and they fit budget tires on there for like €300 for 4 tires. I just cant believe that

MotoZest “data doesn’t support his subjective experience so he is wrong”. What data? Data from publications in the paid pocket of tyre manufacturers or real world experience of owners like Bazzyg? For owners of high performance cars like BMW/Audi/Mercedes/Porsche, Michelin, Pirelli and Continental are the go to brands those manufacturers choose (I have never seen Goodyear as an OE tyre on any performance car), and typically many owners (including myself) move to Pilot Sports quite simply because they offer the best balance between year round grip and wear. If you prefer Goodyear then good for you but “the data” of owners (not publications) prove you wrong.

I bought a set of MPS4s for my M5 6 weeks ago. The new Eagle F1s weren't available as far as I know but even if they had been, my car is too powerful for me to be prepared to push it hard in the wet. The Contis are good but wear almost twice as quickly as the MPS4s so I opted for the MPS4s and I haven't been disappointed. The dry grip is great and they still work well in the wet. Tyres have come on a long way even just in the last 10 years and they can have a huge impact on the what a car feels like to drive.
@robi43875 жыл бұрын
I loved my PS2 over P Zero and F1 driven on different cars like 528 and 540, but with an M5 you have to really think about tyre choice for UK summer roads. I wondered briefly about the new F1s, about the Conti 6, but I'm firming up on the idea of PS 4 S for all the points you make.

Great test and glad that you mixed data with subjective points as well. When tyres are that close, it's all down to a personal preference: Manufacturer, tread pattern, price, availability etc. What this test shows you is 3 things: 1) The top brands are all so close its down to a personal preference. 2) The mid-range brands are again close to each other, and not a great deal far from the top brands with bigger budgets 3) Budgets are cheap for a reason. The R&D was done on a Lego car. Who's buying these?!
@brunodemelo49975 жыл бұрын
One thing that I think you should include is tread widths. Some tires run wider than others (even with the same indicated size) and this could mean a faster or slower tire. They all looked very similar but 1/2" would be enough to sway some of those results

the M4Ss are wearing very well on my Golf R. Far better at 10K miles than the previous contis were at 7k miles. Shoulders and centre tread depth both very good. Its a brilliant blend on tread life Vs softer compound dry grip. Less understeer in dry (fWD bias) and this keeps wear even. I both corner and brake hard (when safe and appropriate). Nothing special in the winter months when tempos are lower, Not shabby either,
@fredygump55785 жыл бұрын
Yes, it is possible. There are machines that simulate tire wear...so you would get a very good relative comparison...but it doesn't necessarily tell you how many km/ miles you will get on a tire. Such a test would be more useful to tell you how performance degrades, rather than how long it will last.

What a great review. Thanks for being brave enough to critique the tyres accurately no matter which company's test track you are driving on. Your comparisons are great with your amazing graphs. I would encourage everyone to read the numbers as well as the bar graphs as these timing gaps can sometimes look deceptively large given the difference between first and last. Your overall review of the budget tyre was accurate as well as hilarious. What you save on tyres you will spend 10 times more when you carry on at a corner and wrap your car around a lamp post. The lesson here seems to be; Don't put budget tyres on anything with any kind of reasonable power. Was the budget option a UHP tyre? I'm off to watch more of your videos. Keep up the good work.

Some word of advice on the Michelin PS4S; they’re not a track tire. I bought a full set for a 991 C2 and promptly went to the track. When they’re cold they’ll catch you out big time mid corner. When they’re warned sufficiently they’re great however that Goldilocks temperature only lasts for 10 minutes. The tires will quickly overheat, force you to go in to slay the pressure and cut the fun real quick. I was having too much fun and stayed out for longer sessions than expected and came back with nearly destroyed tires all melted and with worn exterior edges. TLDR; just get Pilot Sport Cup 2 if you intend to do any track.

I was terrified what the car felt at 100mph on the Autobahn on my way back to the UK... Thrown them away as soon as, and replaced all 4 for matching Eagle F1 ass3. Best to present overall tires, for most purposes but extreme driving. Currently on a staggered set up of Michelin PS4 - disappointed in fuel economy... It is obvious I can't believe it. The continentals are stickier (lower tread wear), hence the dry results. This also means that even with sedate driving don’t expect more than 10,000 miles from the driven axle. I am pretty sure mine are wearing even if the car is standing still. Been there and got the t-shirt. The 4S have better tread wear and are not as sticky, but you won’t notice when driving. Your wallet will though since you will be replacing the contis more often. Conti treadwear = 240 Michelin = 300

Be interesting to see just a couple of these tyres going through the same tests on a different car that isn't a powerful FR layout (Megane RS or something) to see how much of a factor the car was in the tests. I've currently got those Falkens on the back of my car and they put the power down really well in a straight line, which ties in with the braking performance. I don't really get a chance to push the handling sadly, although with a relatively fast car on a public road that's probably not a bad thing. Great video as always of course! This channel has to be one of the ultimate car geek resources.

The Falkens are great. I have them on my m235 and for what the car is used (daily driver, no circuits / racing) they are solid match. Of course - if you are looking for the best in term of grip and performance for a closed circuit the review gives you answers you seek. But for a daily I'm super happy with them.

Thanks a lot for this review. You didn't took a look at the treadwear ? I had Conti sport 6 fitted by default on my civic type R. Lot a grip but very short life time (9000km including a trackday), and easy overheat on track. After I fitted Yoko v105, better lifetime (15000km including 3 trackday) but a bit less grip (especialy on wet), very good tyre concidering the price. Now just fitted ps4s des days ago :)

Nice succinct video, your best yet. I’ve used Vredestein, for several years on road and track use and they are excellent. They tend to cost far less than the most premium brands, crushing them in value. Wear rates are good and they can survive 20 minutes track sessions okay. Smart move bring them to the test. That said, those Goodyear’s were quite a bit quicker in the wet and that is useful if you do road and track driving in mixed conditions.

Bought a 350z a year ago that came with Accelera tyres. Hasn't heard of them then so I didn't expect good things. This became evident when I spun out on a roundabout in the wet at normal speeds. Since changed to Yokohama Advans and feel like glue compared to Accelera.

I'd like to see a budget showdown, with a couple well-established tire brands thrown in for good measure...in non-UHP categories. Clearly the reviewer has some bias against cheap tires, and it's easy to make a showcase between $300 and $80 tires with performance tires in a M-series. But I suspect the performance gap closes quite significantly when you leave the UHP market and an M-series BMW and go towards all-season touring tires in a RAV4...like the real world.
@barkleychristopher885 жыл бұрын
@@cup_and_cone The bias is warranted. A budget tire will never perform on the same level as a top-tier tire, or even mid-tier honestly. If you take for example the Michelin Premier A/S (OEM fitment on a RAV4) and drive it in the wet vs a low tier Doral, the Michelin handles better, drives straighter, and stops quicker than the Doral could ever hope to. If you are buying budget tires, you are sacrificing traction, stopping distance, and safety to save a few bucks. Not worth the trade off, no bias needed.
@cup_and_cone5 жыл бұрын
@@barkleychristopher88 *citation needed "Budget tire" is quite a lose term, and I suspect your bias is not adequately referencing the market, and excluding tires like Toyo A22, Goodyear Eagle RS-A, Hankook 725, or Firehawk AS, which are all very poor tires, yet are by no means "budget tires" to the average person who'd have either set fitted in the belief they were getting a quality brand and tire...when in reality they'd be no worse off on something like a Nexen Aria.
@barkleychristopher885 жыл бұрын
@@cup_and_cone Well, a proper and reputable tire representative/salesperson would not present them as such. That's their duty, to educate the average person so that they understand the difference. They would likely give an option of what they have, something more suited for the customer's driving habits, and something designed for maximum longevity. Think of it as a Best Value/Best Tire/Best Longevity situation. Those OE designation tires are put in place to take business away from the budgets by being more affordable than the premium options offered by the same companies. A quality installer knows their tires, how they perform, and will go above and beyond to see how other tires they DON'T sell compare. For example, I work with BMW directly recommending tires (literally my entire job) and I make it a personal priority to look at how ALL tires are wearing (and how they drive and handle) on the vehicles that come to me with the express interest of getting good information from a trusted source. If there's an aftermarket that out-performs an OEM, you'd better believe I'll recommend it. The good news? FOr the most part, I don't have to because BMW does that themselves and marks every approved tire with a star on the sidewall. On a case-by-case basis, there are tires that work better than others. Prime Example is the current X1 and X2 chassis. With OEM Pirelli Cinturato P7 A/S tires equipped, the lifespan for the fronts is about 12-18k, while the rears is roughly 22-27k. However, the other OEM fitment is the Goodyear Eagle Sport, which has improved traction, albeit slightly more road noise, and literally double the life expectancy. Both tires have a place and customer, it just depends on their priority. Would a Nexen or God forbid an Accelera perform half as well? Nope, they last about as long as the Pirelli's and have worst wet-weather traction, a key focus in my location. "No worse off" makes it sound like you wouldn't present a better option. If that is the case, why wouldn't you? You know that no Nexen compares to even the lowest Michelin. Your customer's car is equipped with a sub-standard tire, but there is an approved option from the manufacturer for a Michelin/Goodyear/Continental/Bridgestone. Do you simply recommend the tire that's on the car now, and throw in a mid-tier tire saying, "this is a little less but it'll perform like that one" or will you say "Let's get you into a tire that's more suited to how you drive, the climate of our location, and one that will get you the most bang for your buck" and sell them a Michelin/Goodyear/Continental/Bridgestone that sincerely out-performs those OE tires you listed? The bottom line boils down to one big question; Knowing what is available on the market, why would you settle for the bottom of the barrel when your safety and the safety of those around you is at stake? Yeah, I have a bias against budget tires. Why? Because I've done the same kind of testing they did here and experienced it firsthand. Try it yourself if you ever get the opportunity.
