It was a chance to mix it up a bit. It wouldn't have made sense to just put a bunch of hard rock songs . If he had those he'd have saved them for Kiss

Paul and Ace had the best solo albums and I've always thought that Paul and Ace wrote the best KISS songs too. Hell my favorite Peter Criss songs were wrote by Paul and Ace. Some of my favorite Gene songs were wrote by Paul and Ace. Cold Gin and God of thunder for example.... And then strange ways and black diamond are my favorite Peter songs wrote Ace and Paul

Here in the midwest, the only song I ever heard on the radio from any solo album was New York Groove. Gene saying Radioactive was on the charts is laughable. His album sucks, and the only reason it sold what it did is because Gene was the face of KISS

I may be an outlier, but I like Gene's solo album. "Radioactive", "Tunnel of Love", "See You Tonight", and "Man of 1,000" are all fun earworms. I could do without "Livin' in Sin" and "Wish Upon a Star", but whatever. Hell, I'd place Gene's output on his solo record next to his output on Love Gun; in fact I'd put it on a slightly higher tier.

Actually, no. Gene's outsold Ace's in 1978. That said, Ace's is the highest selling of the four Kiss solo albums in the Sound Scan era (1991 onwards).

Record World in Manhattan (at the time) was the biggest company in all of America. RS magazine even acknowledged the sale of all four albums. From beginning to date, Ace’s outsold all of them. Gene’s was a well distant 2nd. Paul’s & then Peter’s.

Most people only buy Peters album to complete the set. Some albums you only get to complete the collection. I think a lot of the people who own Elder and Unmasked also own those for the same reason.
