see but the issue is, Una being on the Starfleet recruitment poster could be nothing more than tokenizing her for being an augment. Since we know that genetic augmentation is still illegal 100 years later like when Dr. Bashir almost lost his career when his identity was discovered. So unless the Federation finally changed their laws in between DS9 and Lower Decks, Una's hardships really dont mean anything if there hasn't been any systemic change. Looking at it from that perspective, its even more insidious.

Una was originally played as highly competent but sad/depressed character. SNW's Una is more fleshed out. She is somewhat stoic and deeply obedient to structure but I absolutely love it when they allow people to step out of character. To see Una smile and wink was wonderful. To see her break character and reveal the personal side that she keeps hidden behind command makes her so endearing. I could not relate to any of the women on Star Trek Discovery but Una (and Uhura) is one the best written female characters on the show. There are 2 things that scenes that I think are tiny but precious. The first is when Boimler says that Pike has perfect hair and Pike is both touched and embarassed...and when Boimler says that Una is his pin-up girl.

"Ad Astra Per Aspera" is also the state motto of the State of Kansas in the United States, and the text is on the state seal and the state flag. Just, as a Kansas-born individual, thought that was kind of cool when it cropped up in Star Trek. Here's a quote from a Kansas University scholar: "The motto of Kansas, "Ad Astra per Aspera" is Latin for "to the stars through difficulties." John James Ingalls coined the motto in 1861 stating, "The aspiration of Kansas is to reach the unattainable; its dream is the realization of the impossible." According to the Office of the Governor of Kansas: "This motto refers not only to the pioneering spirit of the early settlers, but also the difficult times Kansas went through before becoming a state. The anti-slavery forces and slavery proponents waged battles in the electoral process as well as on the battlefield. Kansas earned the nickname "Bloody Kansas" because of the war regarding slavery, much of which was fought on Kansas' soil."" So the difficulties being referred to was battling against forces that wanted to champion the cause of slavery, to enshrine a government that protected freedom, thus reaching toward a higher aspiration for humanity through whatever obstacles might be put in the path of that cause.
