The perception of animation as a kid's medium is just as prevalent as the perception that comics are a kid's medium which is why in the west people tend to get up in arms when either of these artforms attempt to cater exclusively to an adult audience. Successful projects in either medium that handle their subjects maturely are looked upon as outliers, but a time when either is fully embraced as "equal" to other forms of media is still a ways off, and probably not going to happen in my lifetime. Most people who watch superhero films, for example, will say that the Spiderman: Into the multiverse film is perhaps the best Spiderman film out there, but if all the people who claim to like superhero films actually went and saw it when it was released that film would have easily made over one billion at the box-office. The only reason it didn't was because it was animation.

I would argue Spiderverse is actually an example of animation becoming more respected. The first one didn’t do amazing, but it had a very strong streaming presence, which resulted in the (imo worse) sequel doing pretty damn well, especially at a time when many movies in general were not. I know people that normally don’t care about superheroes or animation rave about that film. I do think the general opinion about animation is shifting to a more positive one. It’s going to take a long time, but I’ve noticed a trend where the best animated movies (Inside Out 2, Spider-Man, Puss n Boots 2, Boy and the Heron) are doing really well while many of the cash grabs (aside from minions) are faltering. People are being more savvy about the movies they’re seeing, and well made animated films are still making big bucks. There is respect for the medium, and I think that respect is growing

When you said “Scavengers Reign can’t be live action” I screamed “YES”. And there’s a bunch of things that can’t or shouldn’t be because they work so well in the medium, doing it any other way just won’t hit the same. Akira is a prime example of this. So grandiose and stylish, it’s made for the page, or for very rich animation. This is why I hate the idea of live action anime/video projects. Because it’s almost like Hollywood thinks those mediums need them to be cool, and they couldn’t be more wrong. There’s no limit to what you can do in animation, and that’s part of what makes it so special.

I can't help but feel like people forget that a lot of there is a lot of animation in live action as well. Yes there is a lot of special effects and just static backgrounds, but some one has to animate godzilla. Some one has to animate Megatron. Sure it is vastly more costly than 2D or dedicated 3D style movies to get the detail necessary for a suspension of disbelief, but it really shows how important animation is. How common it is also highlights how little Hollywood wants to use real life cinema to its strengths though... Ultimately my point is that we often forget about the efforts of 3D animators in big budget movies and how impossible those movies would be without them. Unless some one wants to make rubber suits that also allow full human movement and a likely way more expensive to utilize a team of special effects artists... edit: just to make sure if someone brings it up, mo-cap itself is an animation art form. A lot can go wrong if you don't know what you are doing.

What I think would really help it is if more money went to the US Department of Arts. There's a reason why most of the cartoons are outsourced to other places (Canada, Australia, Ireland, Philippines, South Korea), and that is to get tax credits and funding. There's a really good video by Doodley on it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z5Ordolvit6Ahck There's an upcoming animation worker strike coming in the weekend, and there's also Harris and Walz running for President and Vice-President respectively, who, in the past have allied with unions, and could have more control once they win the election. We could bring the need to fund the US Department of Arts to help with credits.

Here’s another for the list: localization and accessibility. Yes any show can be subbed, and yes you can try to dub live action shows but it will immediately snap suspension of disbelief in half. But animated media has been dubbing successfully for years - and while some may say fight tooth and nail for sub over dub supremacy, you cannot understate the power of voice. Dubbed and properly localized shows are able to tap into multinational audiences - just look at the most successful anime of all time and how they are able to quite literally speak to peoples from all walks. And moving beyond preference, dubbing enables you to reach blind/low vision audiences, children, and busy adults who consume media while multitasking or too tired to read squinty subtitles. And while yes, more voice actors costs more money, expanding your total audience also represents the potential for more revenue aka: money. So take that to the fancy suits at the top as another check in the favor of animation

In fact we see animation all the time : when a character is made in very realistic 3D in a live action film/ série (like the live action of OP or ATLAB), IT IS STILL ANIMATION ! So animation is already everywhere.

Animation is my preffered medium. It is capable of achieving artistic expression that cannot be imitated through any other way. It is holistically intentional, something that cannot be said about any other medium that spans time.

This show reminded me of Made In Abyss. Same types of creatures and same pacing. Truly remarkable anime.
