Walt Disney himself stated: " You're dead if you aim only for kids, adults are only kids grown up anyway." So it's quite sad to see how many people only view animation as something aimed for kids, may it be regular viewers or corporate higher ups who have little to no respect for the things they create unless it provides profit to them

I love when works tell stories that wouldn’t work in any other medium. Scavenger’s Reign for animation, Saga for comic books, The Stanley Parable for video games, etc… In my mind, they take full advantage of their mediums in a way that very few others could even dream of!

@@kingace6186 I know it's a controversial opinion but we should consider the paneling more than the actual quality of the drawing, so paradoxically, imho, something like Chainsaw Man, Witch Hat Atelier, God's Child are manga that can't be transposed into an anime aesthetically speaking (but that doesn't mean the adaptation will be bad, but they can't restore the genius that is there) While for Berserk, animated films like Akira and Redline demonstrate that even something like Berserk can be made, even if it would take decades to do it well

As long as people like David Zaslav run things - people who look down so bad on animation they would simply discard entire series and films as tax payments... I find it hard to believe in a bigger rise of animation. The belief that people will show up more for live action things than for animation is far from gone either. So happy you’re covering this show! I have been screaming praise for it to anyone who would listen! The animation is beautiful, fluid, and smooth as hell. The characters are fantastic, but the world, the world is stunningly alien and achingly unique. There are words like “Anemoia”, “Hiraeth”, or “Fernweh”, that describe a sort of nostalgia for a place that doesn’t exist or you’ve never been to. I think they fit this show incredibly well. It is a shame what they’ve done to the animation team, but hopefully Netflix can pull through and give them what they need for a second season!

This is why I get so annoyed when people constantly go on about live-action adaptations. As if somehow everything else is inferior and must strive to become live-action or have a "superior" live-action version to its name. It doesn't. And I'm sick of Hollywood or whoever trying endlessly to make things like Avatar The Last Airbender, Dragon Ball, or Lion King into live-action. The latter being completely impossible - which is why it was 3D animation pretending to be live-action.

The perception of animation as a kid's medium is just as prevalent as the perception that comics are a kid's medium which is why in the west people tend to get up in arms when either of these artforms attempt to cater exclusively to an adult audience. Successful projects in either medium that handle their subjects maturely are looked upon as outliers, but a time when either is fully embraced as "equal" to other forms of media is still a ways off, and probably not going to happen in my lifetime. Most people who watch superhero films, for example, will say that the Spiderman: Into the multiverse film is perhaps the best Spiderman film out there, but if all the people who claim to like superhero films actually went and saw it when it was released that film would have easily made over one billion at the box-office. The only reason it didn't was because it was animation.

I would argue Spiderverse is actually an example of animation becoming more respected. The first one didn’t do amazing, but it had a very strong streaming presence, which resulted in the (imo worse) sequel doing pretty damn well, especially at a time when many movies in general were not. I know people that normally don’t care about superheroes or animation rave about that film. I do think the general opinion about animation is shifting to a more positive one. It’s going to take a long time, but I’ve noticed a trend where the best animated movies (Inside Out 2, Spider-Man, Puss n Boots 2, Boy and the Heron) are doing really well while many of the cash grabs (aside from minions) are faltering. People are being more savvy about the movies they’re seeing, and well made animated films are still making big bucks. There is respect for the medium, and I think that respect is growing

When you said “Scavengers Reign can’t be live action” I screamed “YES”. And there’s a bunch of things that can’t or shouldn’t be because they work so well in the medium, doing it any other way just won’t hit the same. Akira is a prime example of this. So grandiose and stylish, it’s made for the page, or for very rich animation. This is why I hate the idea of live action anime/video projects. Because it’s almost like Hollywood thinks those mediums need them to be cool, and they couldn’t be more wrong. There’s no limit to what you can do in animation, and that’s part of what makes it so special.

I can't help but feel like people forget that a lot of there is a lot of animation in live action as well. Yes there is a lot of special effects and just static backgrounds, but some one has to animate godzilla. Some one has to animate Megatron. Sure it is vastly more costly than 2D or dedicated 3D style movies to get the detail necessary for a suspension of disbelief, but it really shows how important animation is. How common it is also highlights how little Hollywood wants to use real life cinema to its strengths though... Ultimately my point is that we often forget about the efforts of 3D animators in big budget movies and how impossible those movies would be without them. Unless some one wants to make rubber suits that also allow full human movement and a likely way more expensive to utilize a team of special effects artists... edit: just to make sure if someone brings it up, mo-cap itself is an animation art form. A lot can go wrong if you don't know what you are doing.

What I think would really help it is if more money went to the US Department of Arts. There's a reason why most of the cartoons are outsourced to other places (Canada, Australia, Ireland, Philippines, South Korea), and that is to get tax credits and funding. There's a really good video by Doodley on it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z5Ordolvit6Ahck There's an upcoming animation worker strike coming in the weekend, and there's also Harris and Walz running for President and Vice-President respectively, who, in the past have allied with unions, and could have more control once they win the election. We could bring the need to fund the US Department of Arts to help with credits.

Godzilla Minus One had a budget of $16 million and won an Oscar for visual effects. Hollywood needs to figure out how to trim the fat on their productions if they want to continue with live-action. Yes, G -1 had a very small scope with most of the CGI budget going strictly to the big guy himself, but at the same time Toho clearly knew what needed a lot of money and what didn't.

Here’s another for the list: localization and accessibility. Yes any show can be subbed, and yes you can try to dub live action shows but it will immediately snap suspension of disbelief in half. But animated media has been dubbing successfully for years - and while some may say fight tooth and nail for sub over dub supremacy, you cannot understate the power of voice. Dubbed and properly localized shows are able to tap into multinational audiences - just look at the most successful anime of all time and how they are able to quite literally speak to peoples from all walks. And moving beyond preference, dubbing enables you to reach blind/low vision audiences, children, and busy adults who consume media while multitasking or too tired to read squinty subtitles. And while yes, more voice actors costs more money, expanding your total audience also represents the potential for more revenue aka: money. So take that to the fancy suits at the top as another check in the favor of animation

Animation is amazing. It's one of the most versatile mediums and deserves a hell of a lot more respect than it gets.

I enjoy animation, as it is what made me pursue it as a career. It feels wonderful to see others talk about how great it is, seeing how far the artists push themselves to create various animated projects for the world to see, and what audiences may get from them with the stories that’s being told. As an artist and animator myself, that is something that I continue to work towards.

It wouldn't be a Totally Not Mark video without Dragon Ball being mentioned or making a cameo

personally I think your video is better written than SR was but I agree the animation and imagination were absolutely mind blowing and I hope it leads to a larger trend of experimental western animation

Never heard of Scavenger's Reign, but appreciate the video I feel a certain way about the visual novel medium and how underappreciated it is and how sad it is that it seems to be perishing.

Amazing video, definitely gonna check out Scavenger's Reign, but I couldn't help mentioning the fact that I think I heard Verboten Domain track from Ender Lilies, such an underrated game

Animation is oft underappreciated. We just see it mainly as a vehicle for celebrities to be funny to our kids for an hour or to amusing the adult population with crude gags or naughty language. But I came to realize a long time ago what a great tool animation can be for storytelling in ways you can't get with live-action.

That's not really on the theme of this video, but I've been watching your videos for a while and I have a strong fееlling that you'd like one manga It's called "land of lustrous", there is an anime, but it only cover's the very beginning. The manga is amazing and very underappreciated. The closest things to it I could think of are Evangelion and attack on titan (the plot is more like aot, the atmosphere and themes are more like Eva) , but this one is more fantastical and less grounded (well, most characters are literally humanoid rocks...) I'll try writing this under your upcoming videos, really hope that you'll notice. If anyone else thinks Mark would like land of lustrous, please like this comment! (Sorry for any mistakes, I'm still learning English)

In fact we see animation all the time : when a character is made in very realistic 3D in a live action film/ série (like the live action of OP or ATLAB), IT IS STILL ANIMATION ! So animation is already everywhere.

Animation is my preffered medium. It is capable of achieving artistic expression that cannot be imitated through any other way. It is holistically intentional, something that cannot be said about any other medium that spans time.
