it genuinely doesn't occur to them to be disturbed by that because christians overvalue sacrifice. the dudes suffer in these movies too. look at the husband - he drops out of school and abandons his dreams and his wife is like nice!!! the fact that grace gave up on her dream of being cherished and pampered by a man who loves her because she tried two jerks and it didn't work out makes complete sense to them. there is a value to sacrifice, but the fact that a sacrifice _took place_ doesn't inherently make a thing noble. it would be a great sacrifice for me to throw away all my belongings and stop eating everything but rotten beets. that doesn't automatically mean i'm learning or gaining anything from it.

This movies lowkey came in and set up the original as a cautionary tale. “Oh, you know the sexist, self righteous, weird ass, controlling dad everyone idolised and blindly followed in the first movie? So here’s the thing from somebody who was raised partially by my grandparents on a farm-you never just grow soybeans what you do is alternate between soy beans and corn. Each plant deplete something different from the soil and then put something back in. Technically soy and corn both deplete nitrogen but the reason that farmers do soy and corn and don’t add in a third rotation is because soy and corn are subsidized by the government at extremely high percentages. So if they added in more nitrogen rich crops, it wouldn’t be subsidized quite as high, and it would take more labor to harvest. The likelihood that a soybean farm would go bankrupt is extremely low because of the intensity of the subsidization. Soy and corn are in SO MANY foods because of the intensity of the subsidies. My grandparents paid someone to harvest their fields for 20yrs because buying all of the necessary seeds from the government regulated companies you have to buy from and paying someone to do all of the work & maintenance of equipment & land still made them money. It was not until after my grandfather passed away that my grandma started renting out pieces of their land. And they had a small farm in northern Illinois. The property sold for almost 1/2mil in fall 2020 and the barns and buildings were in pretty decent disrepair. Whoever wrote this movie has no idea how farming works and they are trying to fear monger. Small farms are going under, but it’s because they aren’t using the seed companies that the government forces you to use to receive the subsidy or they are growing more responsibly are not receiving the extent of the subsidies. Which is why it’s important to frequent your local farmers markets, participate in community share agriculture boxes & purposely buy local. Side note about my Grandparents-they were the only people I knew that were accepting as I grew up in a small, white town. My grandma had a nephew die of AIDS during the AIDS epidemic and she helped care for him,she helped him with his funeral arrangements and she found his body after he passed. He picked a spot by a bench under a tree so after he died my Grandma had someone to sit comfortably when she visited his grave. She died alone at home 3/14/20 and we never had a proper ceremony for her.

I was a kid when he passed and I didn't know how he died until I got a lot older. He gave me my first perm. 😆 Im an athiest now, but I feel like my grandparents were a beautiful example of Christianity. It seems like it has been completely perverted by a lot of Christian fundies today.

North Carolinian here! I grew up Christian when I was a child and was even sent to private Christian school for a few years. I shall confirm for you: yes, Soy Beans are a huge crop grown in rural NC (where I grew up), and yes, there are tons of Christian families that are… quite controlling of their spouses, children, etc. Not saying ALL of them are like the family in these films but they do exist. Once I came out, I realized how controlling and toxic the beliefs were when it came to said crowd of people. It’s scary how crazy these movies portray this type of Christian belief system knowing how true it really is.
