Solo: A Star Wars Story looks like it'll be Disney's first Star Wars box office disappointment. Han Solo is a great character, so why didn't people flock to his first movie? I dig into that question here.

Check out our thoughts on Solo. Great work once again Captain! And I would just like to say that this movie was unexpectedly as good of all the bad rep it was getting, but really does suffer a lot by the inherent production problems that forced Disney to change it's tone and make a Star Wars movie by the end. kzbin.info/www/bejne/a37cmnp5aJVgiKc

The fan reaction to Solo is really freaking weird. I noticed that there seems to be a lot more division among the fans, but there's a lot less rage about Solo compared to Last Jedi. I think timing of the release, and the production gossip, changed everyone's expectations for this movie.

The political commentary was far less then the last Jedi. It's a fun space adventure. Sadly it's a shadow of it should've been due to the lost hype TLJ did. There's also the fact that Hans Solo is already dead in the current trilogy which takes away interest. "Why would I want to invest in a character who I know is already dead and who's arc is finished?" It's literally the same problem with Darth Maul being name dropped. His arc was already finished in Rebels.

Honestly, I think it's because most people actually expected this movie to be complete and utter garbage, and are pleasantly surprised it isn't shit. That said, the shadow that Last Jedi casts is quite long and for good reason. People keep talking about the fan boycott, but I think it's less of an organized effort to not see the movie and more that Last Jedi just kind of killed any interest for more Star Wars in a lot of mainstream movie going audiences than Disney or even fans realized. I mean, after you kill off Luke Skywalker in such a pathetic way, why even bother going back? He appears have been the main draw for a ton of people, hoping to see the glorious return of our favorite OT character. Instead we got a confusing plot with a sad old man on hiding on an island who has nothing to teach MaRey Stu, does almost nothing and then dies. Why should we care anymore?

I've thought about why Lucasfilm decided to release this movie in May instead of in December, and I think i figured out why. The first reason pertains to the Last Jedi reception. I think that the people at Lucasfilm knew it would be divisive, possibly alienating certain portions of the fanbase. So they were counting on Solo to be a safe crowdpleaser to win back people, and to do so as quickly as possible. After all Solo has a fairly straightforward plot, many nods to the OT and tons of fanservice. Right now they're many people who didn't like TLJ who liked Solo, which indicates to me that this strategy did work, though obviously not to the extent that they had hoped. The second is the wait for Episode 9. Being the final film of the main saga, Lucasfilm probably wants Episode 9 to be a big event. I think they're aware that the one-movie-a-year thing won't work because of that, as at that point Episode 9 will be just another December Star Wars movie. Making the public wait a year and a half for another Star Wars will definitely give the public the feel of a longer wait, even if it isn't technically any longer. The feeling of a longer wait will build more hype for Episode 9. Shame, if they had marketed the movie better instead of waiting until 3 months before the movie came out to release the first trailer, their plan might actually have worked.
@redrabbitjohnson
@redrabbitjohnson 6 жыл бұрын
Those are good points, but I still think they should've waited until December. The new era of Star Wars has built a momentum with Christmastime releases, and this movie needed the extra months in order to be ingratiated by the audience. This was always going to be a hard sell for the public.
@pieterboelen2862
@pieterboelen2862 6 жыл бұрын
I was also wondering if there is something very deliberate about the scheduling. The way I figure it: they knew Last Jedi would be massively divisive and controversial in advance, so they put a safe movie straight on its heels. Now with the safe movie doing worse than the controversial one, they've got reason to take more risk going forward. Maybe the stakeholders have been behind the push for playing it safe, while the main creative team would like to be less restrained. And maybe what we've witnessed here is a really clever strategy to get those stakeholders around to the filmmakers' more risky way of thinking. Also: Pretty sure they're testing the waters for a "multiple Star Wars films per year" approach, like with Marvel. Or maybe it isn't any of that at all and I'm reading far too much into it.
@EscapeVelocity11186
@EscapeVelocity11186 6 жыл бұрын
I think that's reading too much into the May date. Lucasfilm has wanted the May Memorial weekend back for years, and many of the past movies, as well as future ones like Episode IX, were scheduled for a May release before being pushed back to December. Solo was just the first one to hit the May target. Of course, testing the waters for multiple Star Wars movies a year is a possibility, though the fact remains that they seem committed to one movie a year. One of my own theories is that they are hearing that "Star Wars fatigue" is becoming real, so they're "overloading", so to speak, the fatigue by releasing two Star Wars movies within six months, then letting the fatigue disappear over a year and a half - fifty percent longer than the wait between other Disney Star Wars movies. When Christmas 2018 comes and goes with zero Star Wars advertising, it'll cause people to wonder where the consistent Star Wars holiday ad blitz is, and increase demand for Episode IX in December 2019.

+Eli N.S I see you commenting that everywhere, but it's just disingenuous to suggest that. The reason why the fans are "hating" on the new movies is because of how much they love Star Wars. I may not agree with a lot of what their rhetoric is, but you can't say they do that simply because they hate Star Wars. They critique the movies because they want them to be better. People did that with the prequels for years, and George Lucas at the time owned up to his failures. Eventually he got it right in Return of the Sith when compared to other two prequel movies. What really hurts is that their critiques are because they are racist, misogynistic, sexist, scared of powerful female leads in the eyes of the people behind Star Wars at Lucasfilm. They just add more fuel to the fire and gives people even more of a reason to hate the movies. Personally, I liked the Last Jedi, but it is definitely my least favorite Star Wars film.

I realize now that I probably didn't even see Han Solo in the Solo movie as the same Han Solo from the original trilogy, which is probably a bad thing since that's what they were going for but I actually kinda prefer it that way. Solo was great and I will definitely watch it again in the future.

I saw this movie yesterday and thought it was...alright. But I really didn’t like how they handled some iconic parts of Han and Chewie’s detail. Chewie literally found his ammo belt on the ground, and Han’s iconic gun was just made out of some random rifle that Becket didn’t even care about. Han Solo in this movie is very different than Han in the OT. The Darth Maul cameo is annoying because it doesn’t set up anything because we know he dies in Rebels. Finally, the twist were the marauders become the good guys completely ruins some of the earlier scenes in the movie where they basically ruined everything and caused the death of two people in Becket’s crew. But it’s not all bad. Donald Glover is awesome in this movie as Lando, even if he kind of leaves by the climax. Becket’s character is very interesting, as you never really know what’s he’s going to do. In one of the movie’s earliest scenes, he betrays the Empire by leaving to go steal from them, betrays Han by giving him up to the Empire, and then betrays the Empire again by rescuing Chewbacca and Han. And Vision is a very great villain, who feels like he’s having a lot of fun in his role. I guess he was bitter after dying in Infinity War, so he came back as the bad guy and got some new tattoos. So overall, I’d give it like a 6 or 7 out of 10. I really wished that the original directors stayed on the project, but hey. We can’t get everything, can we?

I've been a SW fan since 1995 when my parents bought me the original trilogy on VHS. I gotta say, Solo was superb. Not as great as it could have been, but the characters were relatable, and it was respectful to the universe. It was poorly timedccx and marketed, especially considering it was released near the awful The Last Jedi. Solo and Calrissian play off each other so well. They have genuine chemistry.

I was alive in a time where people would camp out on the street corner for three days to see the new STAR WARS movie. I refuse to believe the latest excuse about what month it is or what movies came out weeks earlier. STAR WARS suffered because it was too close to Deadpool 2 or Avengers...? How far can a franchise sink before that becomes your story for failure? Is Episode IX going to flop because it came out a week after the latest animated fish movie?

Box office deficit and poorly scheduled premiere date aside, I loved Solo. Being bridled to the Star Wars brand is what truly hurt this movie. This is because the writers have to remain loyal to timelines, continuity, and obsessed fans. It could have been a stand alone film, by keeping the plot, actors, and just changing the character names. I don’t care that there were production issues, (because I was completely unaware anyway) the result produced one my favorite combinations: comedy, action, and just enough drama. I don’t mind that there were certain characters which were underdeveloped, because those themes could have been explored in a sequel. This movie flew under the radar for sure, but I am not ashamed to say it is in my top three of the franchise. I grew up in the seventies and eighties. Ron Howard captured the tone and energy for me that was reminiscent of that period. It could become a cult classic (you heard it here first).

Solo's failure came from The Last Jedi. The Last Jedi sucked all the excitement and anticipation for any further/future films. Six months after the release and the wound is still fresh. That being said; I would really much like to see Solo A Star Wars Story. From what I hear it's not that bad, but I just can't do it. I won't give Disney / Lucas the pleasure of thinking that they're going in the right direction with the Star Wars franchise. Episode 9 needs to deliver. There are so many unanswered questions that episode 7 & 8 left that need answering in Episode 9, that I just don't see how J.J can answer them and still make a coherent, fun, and exciting film. How long is Episode 9 going to be... 6hrs?? Rian had 2 1/2 hours and gave us nothing, but a lazy script that left more questions, and some lazy answers! That guy really fucked it up! Kathleen Kennedy is not a Star Wars fan and nor is Rian Johnson. Two cons who interviewed for the job and unfortunately for us fans got them!

The very end of Solo made Han a much more important figure in the history of the setting and IMO that made the universe feel smaller. It's good for it to feel like not everything's about the main characters and there's a bunch of other people out there doing their own thing, making their own difference in the world. They did the same thing with Boba Fett in the prequels. Changed him from being someone who's a particularly good bounty hunter, but just a guy to someone whose family was integral in the fall of the Jedi Order. Add it all up and you end up with a universe that feels less like it's populated with actual people living actual lives and more like it's all been plotted out. Which of course it *has* but done well it shouldn't feel like it.

The timing of release was horrible... especially since they had previously advertised it for a late November release, then dropped it six months early with barely any fanfare. Someone WANTED it to fail (*cough*Kennedy*cough*). Honestly, when they announced that they had fired the original directors, I was SO relieved. I have hated almost every other movie they have written and directed together. And yeah, I just really don't understand how they got that movie in the first place... You are going to go from Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, and 21 Jump Street and tell me you know how to do a good Han Solo film? I just never believed that, and while I didn't think Ron Howard was the right fit, either, at least he has made more than one movie I can stand to watch for more than ten minutes.

I liked and enjoyed Solo: A Star Wars Story. And I recommend everyone to either go see it, or buy the DVD. I will never listen to a main stream critic again. Because of them I miss out on seeing a great and entertaining Star Wars movie. They talked so negative about the movie that I believed that the movie was not a good movie. After seeing it on Netflix, I greatly enjoyed the movie and I would have enjoyed it more on the big screen. I see that I can not trust film critic anymore, because I see that they are either more political, or they did not get enough money to speak good about this film. They need to learn to not to destroy things, and people careers, because they just don't remember to how to have fun and tell the truth about a movie that has real entertainment value for everyone and their fans. To make a long story short, They love telling a lie for money, than they do enjoy telling the truth.

Its not just bad press, its bad dialouge, pointless plot lines and characters and too much emphasis on politicising (droidlivematter). The reason for Solo being a flop isnt just due to the movie itself. Lets not forget the last 3 Disney SW movies, especially TLJ that increased the downward spiral into mediocrity and pandering.

I think no matter what Disney or Lucas films does, your gonna find some part of the Star Wars fan base that will be left unhappy or unpleased. If they do something new and different( which I want them to do because that’s one of the reasons why I liked TLJ and I want new stories) your gonna have a side of the fan base who will complain that it’s too different from what they are use to and want to stick to what they want and feel comfortable with. Like the older characters and stories. But if they do that, where they stick to the old stuff and not do anything new and not be different, then you’ll find a potion of the fan base who will say that the franchise is just treading old waters and not doing anything different with the franchise. And feel like it’s just capitalizing of an older franchise without doing new stories or characters. Main in point? Star Wars fans will never be happy or content on both sides.

Hiring Ron Howard lowered expectations? Ron Howard is a very good director with an amazing track record of films that date back to before those two other guys, whom I never heard of, were probably born. I had very little interest in seeing this film after what they did to the character in Force Awakens but when I heard Ron Howard was attached to it, I thought I might consider seeing it. How it turned out and why is another story but Ron Howard in my opinion attracted more interest.

One thing I don't get at all about the criticism of Han is that he doesn't resemble the older Han in the way he is. No wonder I'd say people change, the older He is more cynical and you become that after having lived a little, had friends who turn their backs on you, realized that love is more complicated than the teenage dreams you had, so I think it would rather be unrealistic if a younger Han would be the same as he is when he is older.

They underestimated the fans ability to actually boycott the movie. They pulled no punches in the last few years, and as any abusive relationship, something had to give. Consumers know that the proper way to hurt a brand is not purchase it. Solo failed not because it was Solo, it failed the moment it was announced. You add that two very divisive Star Wars movies, the fans knew that this movie wasnt something they would "miss out". They knew what Solo would be about. It wouldnt be about Star Wars. It would be a very blunt political message, some virtue signaling, and have all the people in charge of the movie making their very best on continue to ostracize the fan base that kept this franchise alive for 30 years. Yeh, that screams "great marketing", right there. Regardless, that formula does not sell (go figure). People go to movies to escape reality for a few hours. That's why they pay premium to go. Not to be berated, and having an agenda shoved down your throat. Unfortunately, that's the SW plot now, and you cant blame millions of people not wanting to be a part of that. Personally, I think if Disney was more hands on with this franchise, it wouldnt devolve into this. I'm fine with having a franchise I like pumping out movies every year. If they're good. If they arent trying to indoctrinate me onto their social politics. If they dont insult the fan base in order to cater to another demographic that might or might not give a fuck about that particular franchise to start with. If they fail in that simple reasoning... why should I spend my money to continue supporting them? Why should you?

I didn't like episode 8, but I enjoyed Solo a lot more than I thought I would. Honestly, I think the two anthology films we've gotten are more interesting and unique than 7 or 8, and they've left me wanting more whereas 7 and 8 left me indifferent and disappointed, respectively. Had the marketing for Solo shown the trailer off during the premiere for 8, I feel it would have made more money because more people would have seen it. I was surprised at just how many people didn't even know it was out, or that it existed at all. I found out about it's May release date in April. A Star Wars movie!! I've been a die hard SW fan my whole life, yet I was completely out of the loop. That is horrible marketing on their part.

That being said, that wasn't my point. I'm saying that claiming you and people like you are the reason Solo failed is nothing more than hubris, and a failure to understand how movies work. Sure, your dumb boycott had an impact, but Solo was poorly placed, poorly advertised, and poorly named. It had a ton of things against it, so its flop is definitely not uniquely because of butthurt fans.

The problem with Solo is it keeps going back and rehashing the same characters from the OT and not showing anything new about them. At this point the only thing we know about Han "Solo" is that he always wore the same clothes. Same thing with Lando. And all of this points out the main problem with LucasFilm and the GFFA. They don't have an actual cannon or lore to begin with. They should already have had the core back story about Han Solo fleshed out long before this movie was made as "cannon". And this is the difference between what George Lucas did in the OT and what is happening now. He had a story in his head long before he committed anything to film. Whereas now, there is no real effort being put into defining the "lore" and 'story' behind the GFFA, especially in the OT era. A lot of ths is just being made up as they go, which is why it is beginning to show lack of returns. At least Marvel has years of actual stories to draw on for their films. And if the story group exists they should be defining the core cannon about the GFFA and what the overall story is within it at different times and the back story behind the major characters we see..... And by doing away with the old EU material they now have to make up the whole story of what happens after EP 9 again from scratch and leaving it to each director to make it up as they go makes no sense. This is what makes a star wars nerd, the ability to imagine so many places and scenarios within the GFFA without resorting to reusing the same locations, settings and characters over and over again. But seems like LucasFilm are not star wars nerds. If you asked them how many ships the Empire had 5 years before A New Hope starts, they probably have no clue. Not to mention how many storm troopers, what the rank structure was, how many grand Moffs and so forth...... And the GFFA is not earth. SJW isn't a thing there. And what kind of sense does it make for a walking toaster to complain about toaster rights? A toaster is a manufactured produced designed to do a particular task. It is not a truly sentient evolved organic life form. I mean you got wookie slaves and all kinds of oppression among different species around the galaxy and all kinds of sex trafficking and the only thing LucasFilm could come up with is a droid as the face of "social justice" in a GFFA? Seriously?

Disney has a movie opening every month from June until January(except August) so it was either May or August or they risk canabalizing their own box office. After they decided on May to delay it to August could've lowered fans enthusiasm even more and hurt even more. In fact May looked good because they could move Avengers up two weeks to give Solo more breathing room without worrying about it since it was their big money maker.

Have you ever considered that they scheduled it like that in order to hide the low box office intake. They expected it to fail and are now hiding that failure behind larger successes and Memorial Day. They knew the fans weren’t happy and there was a possibility that they couldn’t be relied upon for a large profit this time. It was a genuine risk for the franchise. It’s genius on the part of Disney, use your biggest franchise’s box office to hide their second biggest franchises failure. Don’t believe me? Disney expected it to fail since January. Now that’s what I call spin. I see all these different reasons and such, blaming the scheduling, blaming Memorial Day, blaming the marketing, and it’s all bullshit. It’s simply Disney trying to hide the fact that their franchise hasn’t got the same pull as it used too.

They insulting people and blaming it on people who critique their ideas and shows? And even go so far to as to mock people with sarcastic insults online. I've actually watched it about 10 times - I know, that sounds crazy, but it's so nice to have a new SW movie that feels like SW and doesn't get all heavy-handed about it. It's become my go-to. The cast was great and had chemistry, depth, and I actually cared what happened to them. The humor was organic and not ham-fisted and eye-rolling like in Last Jedi. Seeing Chewie actually do something was also great. Was the movie perfect? Hells no! But it was a lot of fun and didn't piss me off. That's all I want from SW these days, anyway.

I think what hurt movies like Solo and Green Lantern, Ghostbusters 2016 etc is the internet. When reviewers call a movie "Bad" the public lets the review sway there opinions and spending habits. A lot of people say "Who needs a movie about a minor character telling us a story we already know and didn't ask for" but then they want to see a Gambit movie that tells a story we already know and didn't ask for, it just confuses me. and the comment is an insult to books like "Tales from the Mos Eisley Cantina" People want to see stories based on minor characters telling stories we already know. They just followed internet reviews and agreed with them with out forming there own opinion. Also a lot of people don't watch TV and a story like this could have been an episode of Star Wars Rebels. Or they could have brought Rebels characters to this or Rouge One. Maybe this would be better if Disney had created a live action Anthology TV series. Or better yet, don't destroy the book canon and then try to rebuild a new EU.

That coupled with everything from bad sets, CG, script, casting, acting, marketing, and directing is why this movie has been so critically panned

The first Season or two is slow, but it eventually easily becomes some of the best Star Wars content we've seen yet (in my -and many others' - opinion)! Derek Lasker it was because tlj had a lot on his back (because they neede to properly develop ray, because her was a suprise protag with sue traits, expand that eras universe make kylo actualy fell more than a goth imature manchild etc etc) and screwed everthing make thing like tonal dissonanace and stupid subplots even more glaring, after tlj unless if you are from a very specific demograpy, you were or for some reason realy like ray, you end up dont want anythig to do with ep 9 and the studio ho instead chosed to prioritize a political agenda (doest mather what agenda, if hindres the story it shouldnt be there)

I'm sadly one of those people. After treating Luke as a character, and Mark Hamill himself, with such disrespect and then killing him off, I really just kind of stopped caring. Rey just isn't as likable. She's a bit of a blank slate as a person and is so massively overpowered I'm surprised she doesn't just win by herself. Finn doesn't have much of a point. Poe is great, when he isn't getting chewed out by middle-aged women for the horrible crime of saving everyone. Rose is a non-character. I cared less about her the more I watched the movie. Kylo Ren is the only interesting character left, and he flip flops back and forth between awesome and awful constantly.

vsGoliath I liked what they did with Luke there was really no other way to make the character interesting but I agree with the rest of what you said

Derek Lasker I think my biggest problem is that it just didn't feel like Luke Skywalker, you know? The Luke I remember was positive and optimistic and tried to always do the right thing and protect his friends and family. I just could even imagine the Luke Skywalker I grew up with trying to murder his nephew in his sleep and then flee to a rock in the middle of the ocean to die alone. He should have picked himself up and went right back out there. Damn it, he was going to do everything he could to save Ben Solo and end Snoke and his evil once and for all! Or, if you have to do 'angry old hermit' Luke, then give him a better redemption. In the end, all Luke does is sit on a rock and act as a distraction then die from the strain of the Force Projection. Anything would have been better than that. We saw his old X Wing in the water, right? That was the perfect opportunity for him to lift it out of the ocean, just like Yoda back on Dagobah! Show how far our farm boy has come! Then he flies off and confronts Kylo one more time, Obi-wan and Vader style. Just give us the ultimate showdown and fan-gasm. Instead we got nothing, which I kinda feel is a lot of the film.

vsGoliath I think the problem was that the whole middle part of his overarching character is the middle where he lives up to his expectations but then has to deal with them and he becomes paranoid and he eventually goes nuts and just gets depressed when Ben turns to the dark side, but it feels shallow when that’s all explained in a couple minutes of one movie
