They've started daily pass-ing any webtoon that has more then 30 episodes. Which is ridiculous, for binge readers like me, who wait for there to multiple episodes. It's absolutely baffling to me that there are other less legitimate platforms out there that have a much better reading experience and content discovery system than a company with billions of dollars. Equally, I find the idea of a company thinking they know how to monetise a creator's work better than the creator themselves preposterous at best. Imo webtoon was 100% setting new originals up for failure intentionally by flooding the app. The minimum threshold that creators have to meet to get any share of their fast pass money makes drastically increasing the amount of comics on the app financially beneficial for webtoon. So many comics on the app make it less likely that an individual creator will get enough share of the fast pass market to actually get paid. Webtoon would rather 50 people spend money on 50 different comics rather than all on one because then they get to keep all the fast pass money themselves that way and not share with the creators.

I was a consistent canvas creator for about a year and a half (I'm not doing it anymore because I realized I bit off more than I could chew!) but I had my fair share of issues when I was uploading. As you brought up, the fact that I didn't get notifications for new comments or subscribers was REALLY annoying since it would be hours or days, sometimes even weeks or months before I saw a comment I could've totally engaged with. I'd frequently check the genres (supernatural and drama) and my series never showed up a single time. Even when I searched the title of the comic, which consists of one word, about 14 other comics showed up before mine, and some of them didn't even have that word in it. I only got about 2 readers that I can confirm who stumbled across my comic randomly, a majority of my readers came from my Instagram account because Webtoon wasn't helping me out at all with promotion. As a general observation, as you pointed out, is Webtoon's blatant favoritism of the romance genre. As a reader and a writer, this SUCKS. It doesn't encourage readers to dip their toes into a new genre they've never read before or help expose more niche comics that don't have romance. As someone who doesn't like to read OR write romance, it made it a little harder to find something that I'd like to read and made me feel a little alienated as a writer. Because of this clear bias, I was definitely always afraid that my comic wouldn't gain any traction whatsoever. Which, unfortunately, it didn't. (Not saying this is just a Webtoon problem, it also has to do with my own story/art style and sheer luck) Something you also mentioned was the censorship issue. Oh boy the censorship issue. Me and some of my friends in the community have DEFINITELY noticed how much Originals get away with and how little leeway the Canvas community has. It's a horrible issue when we all put the mature label on, put warnings in the description of the comic, put warnings in the episodes, and STILL get them taken down for the slightest bit of gore. It's infuriating. The last thing I'm going to add to is the rating bombs!!! My series got rating bombed TWICE. For NO REASON. It's just my fun adventure with 4 of my characters and my funky art style! I don't even think it was during contest time! I think this could've definitely contributed to my series never getting any attention. It's taken FOREVER to get my ratings back to even somewhat decent. All things considered, if they managed to fix some things up, I'd probably upload whatever my next comic project is going to be. But in the state Webtoon is in now? I'll take my business elsewhere.
@Minrotic Жыл бұрын
This! The Rate Bombing will always be a topic and when I started my Webtoon the first year I really tried to explain why their rating system just sucks (in a nice way). I wrote this multiple times to their support. Also directly to their Insta account, got an answer but nothing more. It's like they want to keep these mean ratings. That's why I tend to give 10 Stars whenever I scroll around on webtoons and see someone struggling but it's sad that the count won't even change ...a little...damage is already done. And Ooooff the romance thingy. When you scroll through their original comics.....yeah sure they covers were a little different but title and main character always: same hair style and character. So boring X___x Like damnit guys can't you come up with something new? Instead we get the 10th "How I fell in love with the villain" or "i was an idiot but now I'm a gamer with skills!" I need to stop here. I hope you doing better and create great stuff! Don#t give up! Min

These points are all very good. A comic artist that I follow since he just wrapped up his first comic on his original site and is posting his new comic to webtoon and to his own original site for the new comic, and I can't help but wonder if he set things up with this new comic knowing some of these problems exist and he knows that his fans will follow him wherever he goes, because in my experience, that's what a loyal fan base tends to do, Ethan Van Sciver, a former big guy in the main stream went from working at both Marvel and DC, to independent and posting campaigns on Indiegogo while advertising on KZbin, and Twitter, and he's garnered well millions of dollars from the fans who followed him. This is probably going to sound like some stereotyping but in my experience in looking at Webtoon which is Korean, and the entertainment industry in Japan, I see a recurring thing in the sense that companies in these Asian countries don't appear to have much regard for mental health over all. Japan is not nearly as bad as they used to be as things ARE changing (granted it's slow), the government in Japan is recognizing it's lack of mental health awareness, but they do still have problems in dealing with the mental health of the people who work for them. Manga just like what is going on with Manhwa and webtoon appears to be just as cutthroat, like if you're not making a manga company like Kodansha, Hakusensha, or Viz any money, or you're losing them money then your ass is out the door. I know that's a really horrible thing to think about, no one wants to think about the content that we love having a lack of things that you'd think they'd have, and the phrase with variations of "not your/my/our country not you/my/our say" is a thing, we unfortuantely have to rely on the countries to do those changes themselves, outside influences can't pressure them into that, and I know especially in the Japanese' case with regards to their industries we can fuck off with our calls to change things in regards to their content or how things are run. It almost would be not surprising if it's the same with Korea, Webtoon, and Manhwa.

I say this from my own experience because I took a risk to make a different comic of suspense and drama of a serial killer and webtoon even though I had good views and ratings from the people who read the story. what it did was to delete chapters for me and make the series more sensitive. Heh webtoon comments system in general kinda sucks to be honest cuz if someone comments on your comic you won't get notified, I realized that the hard way lol when I thought just no one was commenting under our comic (I say our cuz I'm a writer collaborating with my sister who is the artist) but turns out we did get comments and had to go on page to find out that. My biggest issues with the service as just a viewer has been daily pass (particularly series I read while the were being released weekly that I can't go back and reread), the fact that I find it hard to find new comics as it mostly recommends stuff they have already shown me but isn't for me and stuff I am reading and finally, my last issue is going back to reply to replies to me is a butt pain. I get emails but it shows me the comment and doesn't allow me to actually reply unless I go to the app or website and go to the pretty much hidden comments tab and scroll through my comments to find it. Then, it sends me back to the top of the page for the most recent comments. Which, if you have multiple pages of comments like me, is annoying.

Thanks for making this video. It was kind of cathartic for me. Seriously though, Webtoon, you are a HUGE company. Why can't you get your act together? Implement a tagging system so that people can actually find the things they are looking for, instead of advertising the same (romance) comics to everyone. Also have some consistency in content guidelines. It's annoying that people aren't really sure what goes because Originals can get away with some things that Canvas can't and also certain Originals can get away with things other Originals can't. It's also annoying how they seem like they are trying to keep their site PG but in their ads it regularly seems like they are trying to entice new readers promising spicy content that doesn't get delivered. A real bait & switch. I wish they would treat their creators better too. They treat creators like a cheap content farm, like they fail to realize the reason the company is where it is today is because of the content those creators brought to the table! 😤

It also didn’t allow me to edit previous episodes to tell my readers what was happening. I tried looking up my problem but there was no mention of the issue anywhere, and I couldn’t contact support.

The only issue that can happen with fan translations is why translators in manga or in general get paid so little. Chrunchyroll took advantage of this when they first started and needed translators. Fans who used to do it did it for them, for next to nothing. Because to them at the time, it was cool that they were being paid anything for something they did for free. Which is why in the manga world if you want to be a translator, why they pay so incredibly little and why a lot of people don’t do it as a full time job. So if we are to do something like fan translations, we need to also make sure that they are getting paid a fair amount of money and not $1 an hour. Not to sound old or anything, but fan translators never asked for money because it was something they enjoyed plus helped them with the language learning or gave them experience because they had an interest in becoming a professional translator someday. Not sure how they do it now, but that is something that does need to be kept in mind if they ever do allow fans to translate. They shouldn’t do it for next to nothing or for free, because the company will sure as hell make sure to keep it like that if that ever did take off. Like with Crunchyroll.

It's really interesting to see all the controversy surrounding Webtoon, especially from a creator's POV. One common-ish point that a few creators have complained about that I can't agree with is oversaturation. Oversaturation is something that happens naturally in any market that have low and accessible barriers of entry. It is not Webtoon's fault that so many people want to create comics and seems a little entitled for creators to complain about the market not being small anymore. Aside from that, there are generally a lot of good points. I'm really curious about where Webtoon and webcomic creators will go in the future.

This annoyed me so much in the beginning because I had a lot of love and attention on my comic in the beginning but had no idea because Webtoon couldn’t send so much as an email 😵💫 It also sucks when people are making interesting theories about the story that I can lean into and play with but I don’t notice the comment until I’ve already made a reveal. It’s also super frustrating that you have to go into every single chapter of the comic to see what people said AND you have to have the memory capacity to remember which comments you’ve seen before which I do not 😂 Plus, like, if I see a comment months later, I feel less inclined to reply because it’s like a massive lag and you know if they respond to that you won’t notice for months.

The thing of censorship in canvas being different than the originals is because Canvas comics get paid by Google, and Originals get paid by Webtoon itself. Since google depends on ads, canvas creators can’t add as many gore, nudity and violence than originals, since webtoon don’t depend on ads to pay the creators. Yes, what they censor should be more clear, but I get why Originals and Canvas can’t get the same treatment

Couldn’t agree more with so many of these points. I can’t count the amount of comics I’ve dropped because I need a daily pass, like nano list. And I wish I could reread some of my favourites like sweet home. I also feel like when a trope is popular it just becomes SOOO oversaturated, the amount of “player” or “hunter” comics I’ve seen at this point is insane and I feel like it’s so difficult to find new storys. I also wish the fan translations could be supported more. I regularly read comics from fan translated websites and don’t even realise they are WEBTOON originals until they come out much later. Nano machine didn’t get an official translation until the fan translations were already on chapter 100 and at that point there was no way I was waiting for the WEBTOON to catch up

I can't remember if it was them who offered me some kind of deal, or if it was one of the other sites that appeared around that time, but I already had solid hosting and IT so I just didn't pay any attention to it really. The first time I really started hearing about it again was when they started having people complain enough for it to cross my twitter timeline. I'm not really sure what to make of it all apart from it seems like the company wanted to get a foot in the door of the American comic market on the backs of artists without having to risk much themselves. I went through that already with sites like Drunk Duck a decade before, so I guess corporations haven't changed all that much in a decade.

I'm sorry but fan translations would be an absolute disaster. First off, if Webtoon allowed fans to start translating comics, they would be taking advantage of the fans and forcing them into doing unpaid labor- even if someone would be happy to do that for nothing in return simply because they love a comic, it is immoral and probably illegal even, because translating is work, and a company must pay for labor. (Like, I've done a few fan translations for misc things, if the company that owned those properties then used *my* translations as official ones, that wouldn't be okay, that would, hilariously enough, be copyright infringement on my translation) Second, if they did implement fan translations, that would mean that some authors would then be at the mercy of their fans; if you want your comic to get translated, well you gotta hope and pray some sweet angel will do that work for you for free and won't ghost you and/or disappear entirely. But you also have to hope that whoever starts translating your comic isn't some hateful troll, because god knows, if anybody could do translations, what would there be to stop some asshole from changing every other word in your comic into a slur or changing dialogue for the hell of it? It's not like you'd be able to tell if your comic turned into a mess of hate speech if you don't speak the language it's been translated into, and unless someone read both the original and the fan translation it's not like anyone else would notice either. And sure, in theory you could potentially avoid this if you only got "approved fan translators", but 1) who's going to approve them? Are the people doing the vetting being paid for their work? And 2) if you get approved as a fan translator, what's the difference between you and the official translators? And that leads into the third issue, and arguably the worst one; if Webtoon started relying on fan translators doing the work for them for free, why would they even bother hiring professional translators anymore? If a small CANVAS comic might get translated by some passionate 15 year old, why not let some other passionate 15 year old do the same work for their Originals? Why bother paying professionals who make their living off of translating comics when slave labor is an option? Like please don't get me wrong, your video is good and your other points are excelent, but fan translations just. Absolute not

@@Kaninchenbau Usually, fans translate comics into languages that are not yet supported by Webtoon. Fans translate by their own will knowing that they won't get anything from doing so. I only use my iPad for fast pass. Also I find this very problematic that I’m able to screen shot fast pass episodes on iPad but if on my Samsung I cannot screen shot. I don’t think fast pass episodes should be able to be screen shot at all.

I really, really miss desktop reading on webtoons, but nowadays it forces me to use the app and it just doesn't quite let me get as into the stories
