I'm just gonna be the "umm... actually" for this one, the Golden Age of Technology/Dark Age of Technology lasted between M15 and M25, however the Cybernetic Revolts with the Men of Iron only lasted for the last few millennia, it should also be said that the Navigators were rumored to be the Emperor nudging humanity forward from the shadows, creating the navigator gene. The reason it is called the Dark Age of Technology is because not much information about it is left in modern 40k, same as our own Dark Ages, it is not because life sucked, DAoT humanity is our current view of a Utopia. The Men of Iron also were said to come close to bringing humanity to extinction, the Cybernetic Revolt is the second biggest single war in the setting, after the War in Heaven. I'm guessing you'll talk more about STCs in your Mechanicum episode, so I wont nickpick about that. I would have liked for you to mention Mount Ararat when you were addressing the culling of the Thunder Warriors. great video as always, can't wait for the next one!
@Willehable3 жыл бұрын
Yeah there are quite a few of those moments in this video in particular. Like the Mechanicus actually being the Mechanicum at this point, which is not just a difference in spelling but cements that they were outside the imperial organisation, which is more clear when they're incorporated into the empire after the heresy as the *adeptus* mechanicus, like the other adeptus-named departments. How they view they also worship the emperor, they see him as an avatar of the Omnissiah, whch is why they even agree to cooperate in the first place. In the end, none of these things are really important for newcomers to the lore, which is who these podcasts are aimed towards.
@Rawnblade132 жыл бұрын
I always got the impression it was also called the Dark Age of Technology because to the ignorant eyes of the Imperium, it was a shitty time. They seem to regard the age as a time when humanity was godless and misused technology.

@@Rawnblade13 That's also how I perceive it; in French the Dark Age of Technology is called "Moyen-Âge technologique", i.e. literally "the Technological Middle Ages", not in a "technology was less advanced back then" way, but more like "that shit sucked, thank the Emperor it's over".
@NicholasAdeptus2 жыл бұрын
I assume the Dark Age of Technology mirrors the actual Dark Ages of humanity. A time where there are very little records of humanity and very real setbacks to the progress made up until that point. The warp disturbances and the subsequent blight are likely a metaphor for the Long Winter and the Black Plague that followed wiping out a significant portion of humanity and setting the survivors back hundreds of years.

The fact that the Emperor was an extraordinarily powerful psycher and that he used his contact with the warp to attain the knowledge to even be able to create the primarchs and the Astartes. So a few fun things of note on this one. -The Thunder Warriors were purposely imperfect, blunt instruments of raw combat with limited lifespans and often mental defects...but I wouldn't quite call them stupid. Astartes by comparison were made for both war and peace, to go to war as necessary then build civilization after. Thunder Warriors were just about war. And in that role they were far superior. -The culling, as it's been described, wasn't so much a hunt but one mass great betrayal. At the moment of victory, the Emperor, his Custodes, and the first of the Space Marines turned on them and wiped them out en masse on the victorious battlefield. Think of it almost like Order 66. -Regarding the primarchs, it's not entirely known how exactly the Emperor created them. We know he used his DNA as the base then added to it (so they are his sons, though how much he considers them as such, and them in return, is up for some debate). Some had non-human DNA added to them, though whether that be canine (as with Russ) or xenos isn't entirely clear. We do know there was likely something heretical involved, likely involving chaos. One theory is this is why they were scattered, because that was a deal he made with Chaos for the technology/ability to create them. Others think he promised the souls of half to chaos. Or it could be that whatever he did to them just made them shine like a beacon to chaos and that's how they attracted the attention of Chaos and were scattered.

@@alexanderm8880 It is the most accurate way I ever heard the sotry summarised XD I think it is absolutly too hyped, it is very low level arguments from both sides especielly sad that the Emperor are sound as a Fedora-Tipper-Buffoon in it the priest at least had a excuse for not beiing educated.

The way Emps killed off the Thunder Warriors was a lot smarter than inviting them to dinner and stabbing them while they were drunk. He left the nastiest, most heavily defended fortress on the planet for last and ordered his remaining TWs (their numbers had already dwindled due to attrition) to take it by assault instead of a siege. They won, but by the end there were only low double digits of them left alive, and those got disappeared with minimum fuss except for one or two who managed to escape.

A few notes on Thunder Warriors They were bred explicitly to conduct military campaigns and fight in them, not just brute strength. Considering that they were somewhat successfully working on ways to extend their lives after the unification without having been engineered for it should give an indication of their resourcefulness. Astartes were more versatile both mentally and physically, that's their strength, but the Thunder Warriors were far from stupid. You're not going to get much diplomacy or political consideration out of a Thunder Warrior, but you are going to get sound tactical and strategic thinking. They were running their own legions after all, and had their own primarchs which were appointed by Big E based on their actual skill as generals. It wasn't just brute force. The dudes were fast and agile despite their size. Much closer to Custodes than Astartes, judging by the fights in the books. They're not just tanking, they're bobbing and weaving on a whole different level from Astartes. They were basically either stripped down Custodes or overclocked Astartes, depending on how you look at it. Thunder Warriors (and Custodes btw) started off with whatever weapons and armor they could scrounge or cobble together at the start of the unification of Terra and ended up towards the end with power armor and the same weapons as Astartes still use. Power weapons, bolters, chainswords etc., some of which are considered revered relics in later millennia. What they were facing wasn't primitive brutes, the technobarbarians were pretty damn sophisticated and organized into legitimate empires. They were using sorcerers, psykers, massively augmented humans, Dark Age tech and they were dropping nukes on each other. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that the unification of Terra was probably the toughest military campaign the Imperium ever had to fight, judging simply by how long it took to conquer a single planet with the equivalent of several space marine legions at their absolute pre-heresy peak. The Thunder Warriors were betrayed at Mount Ararat and most of the ones who had survived the war were killed there. There wasn't much hunting after that, the Imperium was largely indifferent to them once they stopped being a strategic threat. They started becoming indifferent about dying when they figured out how inevitable it was and how horrifying their deaths were going to be. The last survivors were really just looking forward to dying with their boots on, so to speak. (sources: Valdor, The Outcast Dead, Dreams of Unity)

Magnus did plenty wrong. However all he did until Russ broke his back was for the Emperor’s dream and his own enlightenment. In his arrogance he believed that he was not at risk to the warp. He attempted to break through to the imperial webway to warn his father of the coming storm and prospero wasn’t supposed to happen. He wasn’t supposed to be killed but Horus saw to his fall
@TheExcessus3 жыл бұрын
I can't remember wich book it was in but when they culled the thunder warriors in one of the places where they sent in the war dogs (proto world eaters) they counted five marine corpses for every thunder warrior dead.

"Kill me then, 'Emperor'. Better to die in freedom's twilight than draw breath at the dawn of tyranny. May the gods grant me my last wish: that my spirit lingers long enough to laugh when your faithless kingdom at last falls apart." -Daival Shan, Terran separatist warlord, at his execution. Also, in the Horus Heresy book 'The Outcast Dead', there are surviving Thunder Warriors in that, hiding in the slums on Terra running as crime lords. When the leader reveals his name, the Space Marines fighting him are shocked and stunned into silence. It's even enough to shock the World Eater out of his butcher's nails-induced fury. Also, in 'The First Heretic' (I think), its heavily inplied that the Emperor actually made a deal with the Chaos Gods themselves for the knowledge and means to create the Primarchs and Space Marines. But, when he started spreading the Imperial Truth, which would have starved them of worshippers and risked wiping them out, THAT'S when they scattered the Primarchs.
@Codoxnz3 жыл бұрын
During the age of Unification, The Emperor took the children of those he conquered, that he saw as notable, and turned them into Custodes. It is also mentioned in Master of Mankind, that The Emperor can see the end of his plans, but not the pieces that lead up to said end. It is likely he knew Chaos would subvert some of his children, so he attempts to influence which ones fall to chaos, and gives Chaos the 'broken' Primarchs -- this isn't to say that that all went to plan, as it's unlikely he thought Horus would fall.

Plus, I would wager that Big E. made it appear like he had everything planed out when he mostly reacted to some shit. Like the Rangdan Xenocides or the Heresy.

So here's the thing about Dark Ages: The european medieval Dark Ages were named such not because life was notably more shit than before or after (it really wasn't in most areas) but because a lot of it wasn't documented very well. The same goes for the DAoT. It's called "Dark" because very few records from the time have survived. Nobody knows exactly what went on there.

38:34 as a Custodes fan boy, the weakest Custodian is as strong as your average named Space Marine. Obviously not Matt Ward era named Ultramarines, but Custodes are to Space Marines what Space Marines are to the Imperial Guard Infantryman. The Golden Banana Boys are stupid strong. There was also a massive slaughter of the Thunder Warriors carried out by the Custodes, this was the main plot point of the book "Valdor: Birth of the Imperium" where they explored that idea more even though we knew about it peviously like the Siege of Terra series is doing now for that event. Guess I am gonna be the "umm achtuallllllyyy" guy, but this is a pretty big difference; The Dark Age of Technology was the idea of a utopia that we have today. The Men of Iron and the events around them discussed are what ended that era, those wars were the Cybernetic Revolt. The DAoT was a paradise for humanity, humanity got complacent, the Cybernetic Revolt happened and humanity was almost brought to extinction. The DAoT was not an era of war or hell for humanity, they were the exact opposite. They're called the "dark age" because so much information was lost between then and modern day 40k.

Feels like bricky fumbles a bit more on big E i think he doesn't like him that much, sure some of his decisions were bad but the times were hard even after he got the imperium started, he was rushing to get worlds togheter and he had massive problems the human webway would have solved, he was trying to get humanity to the times before the warp storms, set up resurce distribution and solid comunication routes make sure people are properly educated, hard to do that when you have aso many worlds with so many cultures and spaxe travel is a crapshoot His xenophobia is hard to judge considering how hard the eldars fucked up and how hostile other races are

45:00 In the book "the first Heretic" you learn that it's the Word Bearers that by summoning a daemon on Cadia. Fly in to the eye of terror guided by said daemon (in search of the truth), time travel to the Primarch gastation tube vault (whatever you want to call it). And sabotaged the Gellarr field so that the forces of Chaos could steal the Primarchs. Secondly, was there not a part where the Emperor himself went in to the warp and made a deal with Chaos for knowledge, etc?

Also I'm kind of upset that you didn't actually spell out the whole "Because Men of Iron, so No AI, therefore Servitors" causality of it, I didn't realize that at first that "it's not an AI, it's a lobotomized DUDE running that tech, that's totally fine" was why that was. I originally figured it was some kind of penal system punishment just for its own sake.

13:35 isn't he talking about the Arc Mechanicus Speranza? This thing is not just a single STC but one, if not the, oldest Arc Mechanicus and AI, that was made by Human hands, that still exists. Also if I remember the books right she is still loyal to this day, while following some plan that no one understands. All pray to the Machinegod! Praise the Omnissiah and his Children! Oh boy, you go into strong controversy territory here, there is still fighting in the Mechanicum over big E and his worship. Most of the "loyal" Mechanicum see him as Part of the Omnissiah, and the dark Mechanicum hates him as they see him as an imposter. Thanks for this episode!!

The thunder warriors were not just big and dumb, they may not have been as smart as the Space marines but they had at least the normal intelligence of a human being is just that their agression levels were extremely high, their main problem was that their biological upgrades were unstable, unlike a space marine that grows into his additional organs and new biological processes since they're implanted at puberty a thunder warrior was a grownass man grafted with biological implants, extra organs and given genetic therapies, they got big and strong real fast but they were not meant to last, they would go crazy and into psychotic rages in the middle of battle or some times their genetically modified metabolism would go haywire and they would burst into flames spontaneously or their muscles would liquify and fall of the bone, they would develop tumors and cancerous growths, they were just not meant to live long lives, they were meant to be the stone hammer to crush the techno barbarians of terra and nothing more, so Big emps could've just waited for them to die naturally but he knew they would realize something was up when new space marines kept being produced but no more thunder warriors were being manufactured and he knew they would rebel against him for this since they were machines built for brutal combat, so killing them was the best and fastest way to solve and avoid that problem as well as having the added benefit of testing his new astartes against a formidable enemy and see how they would fare, and they didn't disappoint. Basically thunder warriors just got the short end of the stick, they conquered planet earth for Him and placed him in the right position to start his galaxy spanning crusade, and their reward for this was annihilation.
