Did you know that Marianne Faithful's life has been filled with unimaginable tragedies, or did you think her story started and ended with her highly publicized romance with Mick Jagger? As the daughter of a baroness and a British spy, Marianne Faithfull has had some big shoes to fill throughout her lifetime! Thankfully, the British singer and actress have become a fairly notable figure in her own right thanks to her decades-spanning career in entertainment.

Marianne broke onto the scene at only 17 after performing at various venues throughout London in her teenage years. She released her debut album the following year, and her highly publicized relationship with Mick Jagger started soon afterward. Marianne left her first husband and child in order to be with Mick and ended up losing custody of that child as a result. After her relationship with Mick dissolved in 1970, Marianne attempted suicide.
After her suicide attempt, Marianne had a nervous breakdown and was homeless for a few years while maintaining an addiction to heroin. At the end of the 1970s, she released a successful comeback album by the name of Broken English. Although the album was successful, her disastrous Saturday Night Live appearance promoting it proved that Marianne still wasn’t all there.
After over a decade of living in squalor, Marianne finally went to rehab in 1985. Though the treatment was successful, Marianne fell in love with a fellow patient during her time at the facility and the patient committed suicide while she was there. Marianne dedicated her subsequent album to the patient, Howard Tose. The album was 1987's Strange Weather, and it showcased Marianne using her new weathered voice as a blues singer.
Despite all that she’s been through, Marianne is still at it today! Having recently overcome a long battle with COVID-19 that saw her hospitalized, the singer is preparing the release of her latest album. Join Facts Verse as we take a look at the unimaginable tragedies of Marianne Faithfull.

I became a fan of Marianne Faithfull back in 1965 when "As Tears Go By" became popular here in the US. I was shocked to hear that after all of the high-flying friends, relations, and relatives she had that she actually spent several years of her life living on the streets. Unbelievable.

As someone who knows about such things, I know how this can happen. She hid it from them or she always found a way to divert the topic if it ever came up. If people really don't want to know how their family and friends are doing (unless you come out and ask directly) for most people it's usually too unpleasant a subject to address. If you have a lot of pride you wouldn't want to talk about it either. Or maybe she preferred it instead of justifying her behavior to other people. As a person with mental illness and substance abuse issues, she probably pushed people away and some people didn't want to deal with the drama, because you have to admit, people like her that have demons also can bring unwanted drama. Honestly, it doesn't matter who you know or who you are. Just opinions of course.

Marianne Faithfull is a force unlike any other. She's been photographed for her beauty, photographed for her acting, her singing, her exploits, her mistakes, her failures, and just about everything in her life except maybe sitting on her john. And judged, usually unjustly, as if she's a sinner and everyone else are saints. But nobody can honestly say through her battles, her shortcomings, her highs, and her many lows, Marianne Faithfull has never lost her strength and determination to keep going. Regardless of how she's been perceived, she's never ran away or denied anything she actually did. She's no hypocrite. And as one of her biggest admirers I give her the highest of respect for that and also for some of the most extraordinary music ever recorded. A true musician and a trooper indeed. I love you Marianne. ❤️

The reason her voice changed is because when she was living on the streets she became very sick with pneumonia the sickness and the coughing damaged her vocal chords.

A few more fun facts about Marianne: 1.The song Wild Horses is about her. 2.She's related to the Marquis de Sade (from whom we get the terms "sadism" & "sadomasochism.") 3.She says in her autobiography she really preferred Keith Richards & had a brief fling with him, but he gave her to Mick.

I met her Aunt in Bassingbourn near Royston Herts, who lived next to an army barracks. I worked in the barracks and met Mariannes Aunt flying model aircraft(s). I asked her one day was she related to Marianne as I knew her surname (Faithful) and she said "yes I am her Aunt"! I was surprised, but should not be because they look a bit similar. Marianne's Aunt was really nice and friendly..I shall never forget that great moment. God bless both of them.

Most surprised about her ancestry, meaning, who her parents were. Also her seemingly prolific acting career. The only 2 films I've seen are, Irina Palm and Marie Antoinette. My introduction to this beautiful woman was in 1980 when I was employed at a record store in Dallas and, it was through the album Broken English. Before then, I lived in a communist country where British and American rock bands and pop culture was frowned upon. Basically, I spent the entire decade 1980-1990 catching up to everything and everyone I missed during my teens. I lift my hat in awe and admiration for Miss Faithful... what a trouper! Thank you for this very nice video.

Marianne was and is a product of her time! Many music people of that era were heavily compromised by drugs, alcohol and fame. The one endearing fact about Marianne, is that she got through all of this and still does what she does best!! SING Nova Scotia has always loved her and still does! “Why’d ya do it” expressed my feelings about my cheating ex boyfriend. Why do guys do it? We give them our love, heart and soul but it means nothing to them. The lyrics are crude and gristly but they say it all.The bitterness is ugly, as bitter as bile; a sentiment that I hid deep inside but exactly what I wish I had spit out at him. Rock on Maryanne.

That's one of her greatest songs, IMO. I saw her perform live at Slim's, a grunge club in San Francisco's warehouse district, in the early 90s. It was just her in a long black dress with cigarettes & a glass of champagne under a spotlight, with one acoustic guitarist. The stage was very low, only raised about 12 inches higher than the floor. I was up front, & she was right there, practically at eye level. When she finished belting out that song, she took a sip of champagne, looked right at me, and said, "Ah! I feel MUCH bettah now!"

I always thought she had the most innocent pure beauty I had ever seen, her background and looks and talent made the world her potential stage, her spirit had to find a way to be herself as conventional success wouldn't have satisfied her, money, fame, reputation and all the establishment values meant little, she found her outlet in the abandon of booze, drugs and sex , living among the most successful and outrageous band in the world and it was poison for her because she had no boundaries and didn't care about herself, unlike Mick and the rest who valued the money and fame and didn't delve all the way, just enough to keep the rock star reputation afloat , she's the real deal having gone to the dark side and coming back.

My heart leaps out towards her as I listened to this and not in any judgmental way, but in understanding and sadness because we all have a similar journey on this highway. She is so human. I feel connected in some way and in other ways not so much; other than were all in this life, living and dying. Since it was not shared, I wonder if she has discovered Jesus and his unconditional love and grace. I enjoy listening to her voice and melody of music. I remember her voice when I was younger. I was in the goodwill the other day and found one of her CD's, 'The Best of Marianne Faithful' I especially enjoy her singing, 'Tomorrow's Calling' .The lyrics; to me anyway, parallels my relationship with Christ.Reminds me of the question I've often asked of God, where is my peace of mind? I'm sure if he replied audibly, he would say, "if you would follow me"🎵

My 2 favorite Marianne Faithfull tunes are "As Tears Go By" and "Summer Nights." I was a teenager in the mid1-1960s when these 2 songs were popular and I have never forgotten it. She actually has a huge cult following in Europe & both coasts of US. This fandom has vurtually zero to do with her early hits or association with Mick Jagger, and everything to do with her comeback tour, her Broken English & many subsequent albums, & most of all, the singing voice of her older years. The early, sweet soprano voice of her 60s hits has been replaced by a world-weary, whiskey & cigarettes voice of a much more interesting woman who has actually lived. I saw her perform live at a nightclub in San Francisco's warehouse district in the 90s. She was fabulous, & that was one of the most diverse audiences I've ever been a part of-- cowboys, old hippies, gays, businessmen, techies & punk rockers. I was a fan in the 60s & rediscovered her in the 80s. I have a bunch of her albums.

It is unknown why her parents divorced when she was so young. I think that at least some of her worst troubles are due to this event. I also think that Mick Jagger should have made a better effort to help her during her heroin addiction. An outstanding beauty with a remarkably attractive voice, she was one of those women who suffer due to that beauty. I loved her in 1966 and I love her still.

There's a brilliantly edited video of her version of "Its all over now, Baby Blue" on KZbin, a fan created it with footage from girl on a motorcycle. The outro is great touch, as the song is heavy, about love and the life, I wont try to explain the bulk of the song, but the outro, she's cruising on, like all before was just a Wednesday or "all in a days work". Moving right along. The weight of the song proper lifts just after rolling off into a new day, the camera gives no judgement. A traveling heartbreaker like Bond or something. She very much was it seems, damn the torpedoes, at what a cost. The selected imagery from the movie, it's placement within the song, the quality of the editing and the color work, it's worth the watch next time you want to listen to the song. Think the KZbin channel is called Elle or Estelle McCartney.

Fun fact. The Stones were criticized for their ruffian music style by a major DJ in London around the time she started dating Jagger. Jagger and the Stones put together a song and Marianne released it. "As Tears Go By" was acclaimed by the same DJ that criticized the Stones and Mick and proved the range of talent the Stones had. Stones also recorded the song in 1965.

Cursed by sensitivity, beauty, and talent. Wasn't the song, "She's a Femme Fatale" written about her? Or was that Nico?

To the narrator here: You are one of many who splash down a hundred facts or factoids like machine gun spray. Take a breath or a pause now and then. Nobody can absord all of that in a few minutes. Marianne is a special person who needs a little context injected between these facts. Because of your style I got little out of this but I knew much of her history anyway. I don't know if it's a generational thing or what but it is crazy! Excellent photos at least that streamed past while listening at least but please slow it down! I want to digest some of this.

Unrecognizable, she doesnt look like the same person as her gorgeous younger self, not even an older version of her younger self. Maybe part of the price of drug addiction.

Nothing surprised me of all of the crap this video contains. It may all be true but why must we continue to listen and chronicle her mistakes? I feel it is very unfair. She is a brilliant artist and that has been proved by her recordings and song writing. Leave her past behind and present her as the artist she truly is. I am so sick of these grisly headlines which never explain the whole story.

I have not heard of this singer, I suppose because she is British. Still a sad story with all her drug abuse and all. Glad to hear she got clean and drug-free. Thanks for doing this video. Good info. 😊

I admired the 1960s version of Marianne faithfull. She was very beautiful then. She had a lovely singing voice. It was drug addiction which messed up her looks and her voice. I did not like the raspy voice she developed later on though a lot of people like it. It is personal taste. But some critics said she vulgarised her voice. She got into heavy drugs and the music industry has alot to answer for.
