The Beastmen in Warhammer seem like an adaption of the Broo miniatures Citadel made for Runequest, which Games Workshop distributed before Warhammer. I would like to see Ducks from Runequest brought over as well to Warhammer, that could be a lot of fun.

There’s a simple reason why we only see goat-themed beastmen: licensing issues. You see, Beastmen are literally from another setting called Glorantha and its TTRPG, RuneQuest. In RQ, there’s a race of beastmen called the Broo (and their antics would make Slaanesh blush; seriously go look them up). Back in the 1980s, GWS was the one distributing the RuneQuest game, and Citadel made the minis. When GWS lost the license to RuneQuest, they had a ton of unused Broo minis sitting in warehouses. Not one to let several tons of plastic goats go to waste, GWS decided to repurpose these goat men and sell them as their OWN race of beastmen called… the Beastmen. Thus, the neglected stepchild of both the Chaos Gods and GWS themselves was born.

Having been a massive wheel of time (books, not the awful Amazon adaptation) fan before I ever heard of Warhammer, I always thought of the beastmen as sort of like the trollocs from that series. They might be mostly one animal, but there's always parts from others and the weirdest beastmen are a straight up mix of a bunch of animals in the most grotesque and disturbing way possible.

Since beastmen sometimes are born from apparently completely healthy families who then usually leave the deformed babies in the forest if not outright killing them, I'd expect some rather human looking beastmen as well. They'd probably look a lot more disturbing than just humanoid goats. Like...imagine a more or less human looking monster that just happens to have the teeth of a donkey. Or horizontal pupils. Maybe some of them formed erratically and their backwards bending knees don't mesh well with human feet, or their normal legs don't work with cloven hooves, so they can't properly walk or something. Maybe a quadrupedal human with an elongated face. ...basically imagine a human sized Cart Titan from AoT and you get where I'm going with this. Since beastmen aren't even a unified race, you could basically mix and match any animal with any degree of human features. Lovecraft's Innsmouthers are basically beastmen in a way.

I like to think the ape-men of the Southlands aren't a Chaos Beastmen race but rather the original proto-race which the Old Ones experimented on to create Elves, Dwarfs, Humans, etcetera. Kind of a mirror of humans evolving from primates in our Earth.

The reason all the Beastmen you see are of the goat variety is simple - GW went from making miniatures for all sorts of different settings to consolidating all of their miniature ranges into their own setting. The original Beastmen were actually GW's range of Broo miniatures (for RuneQuest), that got their own lore as GW wanted to co-opt them into their own setting. Basically, you have the miniatures, and making new ones are expensive, might as well repurpose the ones you have instead. That being said, all of the lesser known Beastmen are criminally underrepresented, and needs to be put in game pronto.

I think the issue with Beastmen in Warhammer Fantasy is that the sole term can mean a lot of creatures that just happen to have both animal and human features. and by that extent Lizardmen would technically be considered beastmen but on the other side of the balance spectrum(they being Old Ones aligned). GW should have made this classification as something that is beyond factions because tying most zoomorphs into Chaos territory doesnt make sense at times.

Lizardmen are not beastmen. Lizardmen were created by the old ones (old Slann). Beastmen came about because of mutations due to the warp gates collasping.

If you understood the lore, you wouldn’t have made this paragraph in the first place. Beastmen isn’t just a sole term to refer to creatures with both animal and human features, as that is leaving out one key component. Beastmen are the result of man or beast being mutated by chaos corruption. They are not a natural race. It completely makes sense why most beastmen are tied to chaos as they are literally born from it. It’s literally where their moniker “The children of chaos” coms from. That is also why the Lizardmen aren’t beastmen, as they are an actual race, created by the old ones, and why Lizardmen aren’t considered beastmen at all. This is the most basic lore for beastmen, did you even bother doing the most basic of research before typing out something so asinine as this?

Centigors are centaurs. Why do you constantly say they are different? All the "unique beastmen breeds" are just beastmen. They all use the same rules. They are just fluffy ideas you can point at if you want to use different models on the tabletop.

Warhammer Armies (c 1988) pg. 22 :: Chaos Centaurs Realm of Chaos: Slaves to Darkness (c 1988) pg. 204, 208 :: Chaos Centaurs Realm of Chaos: The Lost and the Damned (c 1990) pg. 142 :: Centaurs Warhammer Battle Bestiary (c 1992) pg. 42 :: Chaos Centaurs Warhammer Armies: Chaos (c 1994) pg. 11, 47, 66 (Centaur Lord & Centaur Hero), 70 With WHFB 6th edition Beastmen were broken out into their own army book (Warhammer Armies: Beasts of Chaos c 2003) and Centaurs where renamed Centigors. In the '80s (WFB2/WFRP1/WFB3, each one having a slightly different world map) Cathay was used to refer to a whole region of countries corresponding to all of continental East Asia with the label roughly in its middle, circa on top of Southern China (which is somewhat ironic, as Cathay is originally a historical term for Northern China), more or less where "Kingdoms of Ind" is put on the map shown. In the '90s (WFB4/WFB5) the world maps cut off at various points, put always to the west of Cathay Proper, with arrows toward Cathay pointing in the direction of where it is on the Immortal Empires map. In 2001 the WFB6 High Elves Army Book provided a (flawed) world map with "Oriental Cathay" on the equivalent of the Indochinese Peninsula (which should IMNSHO be called the Siamese Peninsula, but apparently the countries in the region and nearby largely stuck with the term Indochina, probably due to regional rivalries, aside from the Chinese languages, which call it the Chinese Southern Peninsula, which is imperialistic revisionism and as such no better than Europeans just merging the names of the two nearby historical superpowers) and the "Hinterlands of Khuresh" where China would be, as well as lacking Nippon's northern islands. In 2004 we got the more or less definitive world map in White Dwarf #300, with the Kingdoms of Ind, the Hinterlands of Khuresh, and (for the first time with this name) Grand Cathay - and the Great Bastion - all in the places where they ought to be (Indian Subcontinent, Indochinese Peninsula, and Northern China, respectively) as well as the northern islands of Nippon not only back, but also the country's label moved on top of them, which as a blemish on the map is why ever since there's been confusion about whether the original main landmass of Nippon is part of the country or not. The 2004 map was reused in the WFB7 and WFB8 core rulebooks. The 2001 map was bafflingly reused in the WFB7 High Elves Army Book and some other army books like the one shown here.
