LYRICS
A quark can never exist by itself in isolation
Something very odd happens when you try to sepparate them
The energy it takes, to break up those two best friends
is just enough to create two more to join back up with them
A photon has no mass...and thus travels at light speed
If you're able imagine going that fast, and if you try I think you might be
You'd be emitted and absorbed in the exact same instant
even if you travelled from a star 13 billion light years distant.
[CGF - in various orders - standard tuning]
THE UNIVERSE IS WEIRD
I'm kinda freaking out
What is this all about
Infinite unbounded sets
and hadronizing gluon jets
We'll never understand
All of what we have at hand
At least that's what I fear
An electron has a strong charge, as strong as a proton
And a tiny mass but not nonexistant like the photon
You might want to take a seat now, cause this might hurt your mind
It has mass and charge, yes, but not, apparently, a size
There's a lot of stuff all around you right now
Your chair your friend your planet and your sister's neighbor's cow
Mundane mass and energy is all we know and undestand
but it's only 4% of what the universe has at hand
I was driving in a van with my brother and I said
John, hey, guess what, like, dude, NO EDGE!
Because the universe does not exist in any way we can conceive it
No center, no edge, no none of that, whether or not you can believe it
Once upon a time, in a gassy liquid stew
A molecule was like "hey, I turned me into you"
This may be the biggest mystery of all the ones in which we dwell
How the universe created a tool with which to know itself

Dear Universe, There is no reason why this song should hurt your feelings. Being called weird is one of the highest compliments I could hope to receive. It means that you are special and unique and amazing because you stand out enough to be different. Embrace this song. Sincerely, An Inhabitant of the Universe

So one of my old science teachers is sadly leaving my school due to personal medical issues, and the negative effects the stress of teaching is having on his health (or at least that's the reasoning I've been told), and as a member of the advanced AV class, I've been put in charge of his farewell video. The plan has been to have him do a cool, flashy demo, or something sciencey, and then have a small interview, "what are your plans? Anything to say to the school? Thank you for all your hard work," stuff like that, and to have a science related song in the background, or even possibly integrated into an demo,but I'd been having trouble choosing a song. And then I remembered this, and it was perfect. Now I can end the video at the ending of the song, with a caption to the extent of, "Mr. [teacher] Thank you for marking the universe seem a little less weird" So yeah. I'm gunna pay for it, no worries on that front, but I felt like I should say something. He was a great teacher, and imma miss him, so in there unlikely scenario Hank actually reads this, I wanna say thank you for helping me give a great teacher the best send off I can, and if he doesn't, then this will just be a sort of tribute to a great teacher. He took time to answer questions, even if they were somewhat unrelated to the topic at hand, he donated his time to the school's Science Club, he helped inspire and push me towards an engineering career (even though I ended up perusing another field, but the motivation was appreciated, even if he didn't realize he gave it), and all in all, he was a great teacher. I know that my school, as well as myself, will miss him.

@InvincibleWeeba 9 жыл бұрын
I appreciate what you're saying but Hank's specialisms are environmental science and biochemistry rather than Physics so yeah, he does have the occasional inaccuracy here or there (although not usually when he's presenting SciShow because those are massively researched when written) but my problem with TBBT is that it tries to one; portray intellectuals as socially inept weirdos that are hopeless with women while also 'dumbing down' massively important scientific theorems in order to appeal to the masses, you don't necessarily need a degree in Physics to know that and by saying "I'm a second year, you can trust me" you are assuming no one else in these comments has a Degree, Masters or PHD in Physics.

InvincibleWeeba well the line "you'd be emitted and absorbed both in the same exact instant" is either a gross misunderstanding(which is usually the result of being a dilettante in many different fields without actually applying yourself to any of them thoroughly) I dont know what it is if it isn't a misunderstanding, of ots a figure of speech im really pissed off with hank cause that's not permissible i think he might've mixed up with the fact that we can't see any light more distant than 13 billion light-years which is equivalent to the fact that we can't see further in to the past than 13 billion years and that is because before 13 billion years ago the universe was full of matter and antimatter and these annihilated to make a lot of light and fortunately for us it left over some matter but before 13 billion years ago there wasn't so much light and even the light that was there would be absorbed immediately because of the sheer amount of (anti)matter i think thats what hank mixed up with *****

You have such a fun, unique style man. I love the way the simplicity of the progression beautifully showcases the impressive complexity of the vocal timing. Having such an enormously intellectual lyric content to squeeze in, I would imagine that performing this thought-provoker' had to become quite entracit to master. Certainly a brainful, making this an extremely fun ride through one's own personal understanding of physics and internal thoughts on reality, about existence, of - everything... :) ! lol I found myself perplexed before the end of the song. Once I realized thay I had drifted off into wonderment, my little trip was over, abruptly interrupted by a quick subconscious analysation of what it was that had so greatly enchanted me. All at once, I knew it was a perfect combination of your extensive knowledge of science, love of the unkown, excitement of discovery, enchantment of mystery, perplexity of the universe, it was fun but educational, serious but light, preceved as literal yet acknowledged as unknown. I could go on and on. This song really gets me thinking. OBVIOUSLY lol novel comment! I truely appretiate what you've done here. This is going to sound really judgemental but I wish to share what you have given me. For the longest time now good lyrics and a few acoustic chords just haven't been doing it for me like they used to. I feared that the old harmless cleché of the kumbaya "campfire player," if you will, had either evolved/devolved into a new breed of "singer/songwritter" who, unfortunately for me, usually come across as; insincere - striving to be something they're not, self absorbed - focused on appearing cool, attractive, or gifted, or just one of those "cover junkies" - who always expects everybody present to listen AND pay attention to their oh so genoruous performance regardless of his or her audience's preoccupation. Quite refreshing sir!

I think he's referring to the fact that matter and energy as we commonly think of them only count as 4% of the mass/energy of the universe, and the other 96% are dark matter and dark energy, not that we're 4% through science. Dark matter and energy are poorly understood, but there are theories about them.

Coming back to this on Jan. 26, 2014, I have just realized that this video was my very first vlogbrothers video and that I have been a nerdfighter for over a year, which feels awesome. To know that I have been part of a community that can raise 800,000 dollars for charity for over a year is crazy. So thank you to John and Hank for making a community that is so awesome, and thank you to nerdfighteria for being super freaking awesome all the time. DFTBA!!!!

That was awesome, but I hope we never understand everything, because then there would be nothing else to learn, like in mega mind, once he "killed" the super hero, what else was there to do? So many things are like that, In a show I used to watch called pinky and the brain, I always thought, "what would happen if they actually managed to take over the world?" He would have nothing to do.

+The Pip Having nothing to do is much better than having a problem you can never solve. You're not going to be content either way, so might as well pick the option that has all problems solved. I hope we do one day understand everything, having nothing to do is a beautiful and privileged place to be.

Wait, what? An electron has a mass but not a size? Would that not make it infinitely dense, and thus be a singularity?
@SwiftrunnerXXY
@SwiftrunnerXXY 9 жыл бұрын
KC Sutherland Yes. It is, in the strictest sense, a singularity with the mass of one (1) electron. However, that mass is so incomprehensibly miniscule that the event horizon of that singularity is... well, hang on, let me find a calculation for it... a sphere with radius of about 10^-57 meters. Six million billion billion billion billion billion such spheres placed next to each other would be less than the width of a human hair. TL;DR: Yes, but such a tiny one that don't worry.

+SwiftrunnerXXY You made me laugh incredibly hard. Your statement would be conceivable were it not that a planck length lies around 10 to the -35. What you're suggesting is a singularity that's smaller than the very resolution of the universe, which is preposterous. An electron has no inherent size because it is a wave function. If you want to know the size of the electron you'd be better off finding the size of it's wave function which is inherently the same as the size of an atom. Let me be very clear: There is NO singularity being made by electrons.

mit1mit2mity4 What about that famous experiment? I can't remember the common name, but in essence they proved that electrons act either as a particle or a wave, completely capriciously. Basically, when electrons were fired at a single strip hole in a metal sheet, they acted as a particle (forming a straight line imprint behind it). However, when they fired electrons at two parallel strips, the electrons acted as a wave (creating the banded look associated with diffraction). The scientists were confused, so they fired the electrons one at a time, but still produced a wave pattern, as if the electron were bouncing off itself. When the scientists observed the electrons very closely to see what was happening, however, the electrons acted as particles again, forming two strips behind the sheet of metal. Basically, they concluded that an electron is both a wave and a particle simultaneously. That explains why it has mass but not size, and anything with mass but no size has, by definition, an infinite density.

Everything we know, matter, light, the stars, cake, everything, makes up just 4.9% of the universe. Dark matter, whose gravity we feel but remains undetectable, is 26.8%. The rest is Dark energy, an unknown force causing the acceleration of the expansion of the universe, making up 68.3% of the universe.

In particle accelerators free quarks and gluons are formed in a 'jet' coming off of a high energy collision. Hadronization is the formation of Hadrons (only stable ones being protons / neutrons) from this jet of free quarks/gluons.

@Dimmu Herra Well the cloud of 'virtual' particles is in the shape of a perfect sphere although due to the accuracy of the measuring equipment it may in fact have a slight distortion, due to the pull between the negative and postively charged poles, perhaps hank was referring to the center point of the cloud.
