I don't think they would have kept Smith long term. If he would have won a Super Bowl in 2017, I think at most they would have kept him 1 year longer (2018 season) which was left on his contract and then released or traded him. Reid and Veach knew what they had in Mahomes after a few months of practice during the 2017 season. At that point, Smith really didn't stand a chance to stick around for another season (large salary cap hit) or long term. If the Chiefs would have won a Super Bowl in 2016 or earlier, there's a very good chance Mahomes never gets drafted by the Chiefs, which makes Smith the long term starter (Mostly due to their draft position of 32nd, not because they wouldn't have still been searching for available QB prospects).

Niners fan here and I’ve been saying all of this since he was drafted and thrown into the deep end. The 49ers weren’t a fit for ANY QB back then, that revolving door of coaches guaranteed a shitty team. Aaron Rogers was lucky to of been passed up, he wouldn’t be shit had he gone to San Francisco. I felt bad for Alex when he was benched for Kap, but as a fan I knew Kap gave them a better chance of winning so I supported Harbaugh for the move. When they shipped Alex off to KC, I had a really good feeling he’d flourish there, and of course he did because Andy Reid knows how to develop a QB. SF still struggles in that department but I can see some potential in Jimmy G.

Chiefs RB Mack Lee Hill was pretty unlucky. I can't prove it, but I'm pretty sure that Hank Stram found the word "matriculate" from Hill's obituary. Another Chiefs RB, Joe Delany was pretty unlucky too. Chiefs sack specialist Derrick Thomas was pretty unlucky as well. So there's 3 Chiefs that Alex would probably admit are more unlucky than him. How many others around the league never got the opportunity to even play? Truly hope Alex is able to return to form and excel. He's a truly good person and he gave KC fans some very good seasons. If the Chiefs had a decent secondary during his tenure, we'd have probably won at least 2 Super Bowls with him.

The 2017 NFL draft is a prime example of how where a quarterback is drafted can impact the performance. Mahomes and Watson were drafted by good franchises in good situations with competent coaches who know What the fuck they are doing, while Trubisky was drafted by a poorly run franchise who is the epitome of clueless on how to develop and help quarterbacks and is blatantly toxic for quarterbacks. Not to mention a mediocre coach in Fox who was on the hot seat for incompetence, and was not going to help Mitch develop. Then Mitch gets settled with Matt Nagy who chooses to not let Mitchell play to his strength, and habitually neglects the running game while poorly preparing the Bears and not using his common sense. Environment does indeed matter.

He led Buffalo to the playoffs for the first time in almost 20 years despite the fact that he was wrongfully bench for Nathan Peterman and then he gets to the Browns and almost won them their first game in over a year and thanks to the kicker missing field goals against good teams and an unfortunate injury, Baker Mayfield comes in the next game with a new kicker and gets credit for the first win and then Tyrod is screwed again.
