So is this one of those games where you pick a premade character and you never get to make your own?

So there are the hero types and each type has 3 weapon specialisations. Think of it more like how you can pick a race in wow and only certain races can choose certain classes, but in this case you can switch between the 3 specs as you level up. You then choose 3 of 9 masteries that you can focus on and further customise your build. So for example the warmonger (orc) can be a legionary which is a tank, a shaman with fost weapons and a pet wolf, or a commando who carries a mini gun. As you can see the 3 specs are vastly different from what you would see in wow with the 3 specs you can choose in there. I hope I've explained that we'll enough? ☺️☺️

When they first showed the game, you basically picked a “hero” and that was your character. Since there was a lot of backlash to that they now have a character creator.

It's open world toggle in zones. You can always be attacked but it's also toggle. There's a karma system meaning if you attack a non-flagged you receive negative karma. Too much negative karma and you become a criminal who can be freely attacked without penalty. There's also protection against being attacked by someone much higher level than you
