The Random, Con is correct. To avoid water getting into the backlight you use adhesive around the glass. Why? If water is slipping by the glass it has a perfect route to go into the backlight layers due to water tension. Anyways the real reason they used adhesive is because of various advantages, not just because apple is greedy.

I repaired so many of these. When you lifted the metal plate that has all the screws you need to push the board down near the flex cable is soldered or you tear it like you did the first time you opened it. Also removing the board and battery with the copper back part helps not mess up the battery. My specialty was replacing the charging port because nobody on this island could do it.

The solution: dont reinstall the screw near the power button cable when reinstalling the logic board. You will have plenty of screws holding the board in place, but if that screw is pinching the cable then that screw can stay out

There isn't really any other way to take the batterys out on iPod Touches, there aren't any pull tabs and the adhesive is a bit overkill for such a small battery, he should have used a plastic tool though, you can sometimes slice through the layers of a battery if you use a metal tool and that can be pretty dangerous.

I managed to save 8 of them fully while the other two were too far gone to be worth fixing. I don't envy you on this repair.

Adam Steven Not true... I have repaired countless of these. I don’t know how else to say it but this guy is a noob. He broke the flex twice. The first time lifting the metal plate and the second time connecting the digitizer. He messed up the battery when he could have lifted it with the copper back. He fucked up the speaker by not being careful or using a little heat. Even his solder joints didn’t look that good.

sometimes you just have to do that to get certain batteries out of certain devices if you do bend it like he did I wouldn't recommend reusing them, it's very rare for a battery to really do anything crazy just by prying it out unless you puncture it.

Me too. I've tried to repair three of these iPods. One had a gap under the screen, second one sealed correctly but the buttons flex was damaged and wired manually causing power+volume up when pressing power. Last one was almost done and the speaker connector broke off the board. Now it is cheaper to buy used working iPod touch than repairing one >_

Thank you for this video, Hugh. I recently had to lift up the rear seats in a car I bout a couple years ago. I found an 8 gb iPod touch under there. It was all grimy and dirty, but after a wipe down it cleaned up ok. I plugged in a charger I had. At first it didn't do anything. I waited for it to charge up enough to power up, but nothing. Eventually I unplugged the charger, and pushed it in and out of the charger port, wiggling it as I did. Eventually it powered up, but as soon as I unplug it, it shuts down. I was looking to see how hard it would be to change the battery. This video has shown me that it's not worth it. If I want to use it, I will have it plugged in, in my car or something.

This happened to me as well! When I took the cable out it had a small mark on the cable inside the ribbon. I found out that it was long screw damage witch was very weird because I knew I had used the correct screw. I replaced the cable and didn'd screw in the screw above the cable, and it worked. I screw in the screw as much as I could before it got tight, and it worked fine. So I believe Apple used a screw that's to long for the spot.

I own(ed) one of those iPods, I bought it when it came out. The home button stopped working so I opened it just fine, then when I closed it, the screen stopped working. I realized I slightly tore the screen’s little cable at the top😅. I didn’t think it was worth the trouble of trying to fix it so I left it like that. I still managed to retrieve all the pictures I had on it at least, I ended up buying another one for around $20USD a few months ago and it’s in surprisingly great condition for being used given it’s age. Great video Hugh!!

They're bane to my existence and the primary reason I get a lot of angry returning customers. Also the 5th/6th gen iPod touch are nightmare as well. The only other device I have the hardest time is the HTC One M7 (2013). I'm a software developer now. But I miss and don't miss mobile repair career. I had one of these and the screen got smashed. I decided to buy a screen replacement from amazon when I was 15 or so. I did the replacement and it worked! I didn't have adhesive so I just ducktaped the corners to hold the screen in place. About a week later, only the bottom half of the screen worked and it slowly got worse and worse. I still have it, it can power on but the screen just doesn't work. I thought about replacing it now and properly fixing it but I'm not sure its worth it

Somehow I managed to replace the screen on it while in high school. I used normal hairdrier to take it apart, also broke and replaced that flatflex cable, and didn't have good glue to keep new screen properly in place. But it worked. Definitely removed motherboard in process. I remember that thin strip of pcb keeping two halves together and bending it to take board out, luckily didn't break it

I think one of the screws is probably causing a short of some sort so try removing a screw and testing it out and it might just work idk just an idea

These are a walk in the park to repair. I've repaired hundreds of them. The hardest part was getting bent ones sealed back up properly. Pull the WiFi cable away from the white plastic thing it's stuck to. Once that's done, it will allow you to fully pull the motherboard away on an angle from the housing. Just enough to get a full finger behind it to snap in the digitizer cable.

The iPod touch 4g was the first „high tech“ device i tried to repair. It turned out great but now the volume up functions also the power button, so now i have 2 power buttons instead of none you got. This thing is crazy

I have one of these and I decided to open it up one day just to see. That latch that you have to press down before laying the screen down is hell, it took me SO LONG to put that down and it took FOREVER to get it back in place. I didn't even replace anything, I just opened it, to hell with that.

It looks like you didn’t cover the solder connections on the board with kapton tape so the metal plate is now shorting out the soldered connections when the screws are tightened. Great video.

as an general tip which I do not see very often (and honestly I dont know why...): Before trying to remove the battery for example, get an small syringe and draw up some ethanol... Even normal hand disinfection fluid will do it. Just put a litte bit on every side of the battery. wait 1-2 mins and the ethanol will start to make the gluestripes soft. You can than lift one side up a little bit and again put some fluid underneath it. Doing it like this will let you remove any glued part as smooth as possible. And dont think too much about, that ethanol could damage anything. Thats not the case. Anything else used in such devices does withstand it really well.

The soldering points on the cable that the power button is attached to is touching together against metal or the frame of the ipod. It needs to be covered so the soldering points do not cross connect

I used to repair these back in the day. Easy stuff compared to todays stuff. (I do microsoldering on iphones etc) I'll just start by letting you know that the 2 holes behind the power button you need to keep those intact as theres a wire that runs just above or below the holes so most likely you tore it when you assembled it. Also you need to use FLUX when soldering. I cringed when I saw your solder joints.. Good luck let me know if you have any more questions

if I had to make a guess, I`d bet that what broke the power button was Apple`s brilliant idea of placing the camera screw hole right above the power button cable, so if you screw it firmly into place as is expect of screws, it actually pierces through the button cable

Good job hugh. I tried to repair mine. The soldering part is very critical. At first it was ok. But power button not working the next day. It was on and off when i keep on solder the cable. After 1 week of soldering i let it rest for good.
