Seneca wasn't just a stoic philosopher, he was also a playwright, statesman, and Senator in the Roman parliament. He was also a tutor and advisor to the Roman Emperor Nero. Even though he held these prestigious positions, his life was full of challenges, difficulties and hardships, and perhaps, it was these obstacles in his life that made him a philosopher, as he himself says “A gem cannot be polished without friction, nor a man without trials.”
