Toward the end of his TV career, Bob Ross stood atop a $15 million empire of live classes, art supplies, and how-to books.
But if you buy one of the many Bob Ross products out there today, do you know who the money really goes to? You may not like the answer to that.
While to many people Bob Ross symbolizes a life committed to artistic creation and the joy of painting, his life signified something way darker and more frightening: the exploitation of one’s image in the name of profit and greed.
This is the tragic story of Bob Ross that includes deathbed marriages, last-minute estate changes, business and family betrayals, CIA-style tape recordings, and even a former CIA agent.
Robert Norman Ross was born in Daytona, Florida, in 1942. He dropped out of school in 9th grade to work with his father as a carpenter.
At 18, he joined the Air Force and moved to Alaska, where he’d spend the next 20 years as a drill sergeant screaming at recruits. He was such a hard-ass that he earned the nickname “Bust ’em up Bobby.”
But his life changed when he discovered art.
Watching TV one day, he caught Bill Alexander, a German painter who had a PBS show called “The Magic of Oil Painting,”. Bob was instantly hooked.
He became one of Alexander’s traveling instructors and later gained his painting instructor certification. Alexander was using what’s called “wet on wet” technique, which Bob later adopted.
Despite his obvious talent as an artist, Bob’s early years as a painter weren’t all that profitable. Being Alexander’s star student didn’t pay very well, and the few paid lessons that he managed to arrange barely covered the bills.
In an attempt to save money on haircuts, he let his hair grow, he got a perm and decided he would never need a haircut again. Bob actually disliked the hairstyle, but his perm had later become an integral part of his public image and he felt that he was stuck with it. So he decided to keep his curls.
Trying to cope with the loss of her son, Annette Kowalski took one of Bob’s classes, and she was mesmerized.
Annette was the wife of Walt Kowalski, a former CIA agent with cold shark eyes. The pair saw Bob’s potential and were set to make him a TV star. Together with Bob and his wife Jane, they launched Bob Ross, Inc. Or BRI.
In 1983 “The Joy of Painting” premiered and PBS stations across the country quickly picked it up, rocketing Bob to television stardom, airing until 1994 and broadcasting on 277 stations to over 80 million people daily, the brand of Bob Ross was born making him a competitor to his former mentor.

Plus that technique as mentioned in the video is not Alexander's invention so he doesn't have anything against Bob. He's sour that his student is able to generate more audiences and attention using the same technique, but it's pretty clear why. This is so sad. I used to watch Bob on PBS with my toddler, who had an artistic streak. She loved to watch him and was doing her own version of his paintings herself! (No, you'd never mistake one for the other, though 😉) We met him at a PBS event in Central Park, and she was as totally thrilled to meet him as he seemed to be to meet her. He picked her up and showed her off as his youngest fan! Not sure which of them was happier in that moment!

Nope it's desire although greed is a component of desire. The wars these ideologies and many other forms of indoctrination/control is all because of man's desire. Religions laws rules terms technology any form of construction money and you. These few examples are just man made things lies and manipulation that we all buy into. Back then they would force us but today conventionally we willingly obey and its all because of these things and the temporary pleasure they bring. We all know this to some degree but we all still play their game because we're just like them which is another thing they taught us. We are all the same we all want control comfortability stability and reassurance but our governors are seen as these monsters but if we took their role well history would just repeat itself. Society isn't even a society to be a society we all must be one but were more divided than ever. The good the bad the black the white the tall the short the broke the rich the female the male the kid the adult are all a division. Your grandchildren will be more doomed than you so enjoy these days persisting to be in denial and in invisible shackles.

When Bob Ross tried to get his son involved, he should have understood his father and stepped up. Today he pays a great deal for not wanting to grow up and understand life when his father was trying to give his legacy to Steve. Regrets don’t change the past. Steve was immature and lacked simple understanding of Business and that is why he doesn’t have the BRI today. Rest in peace Bob Ross. There won’t be another Bob Ross 🙏🏽🤍

Good to know. Won't ever buy any Bob not really Ross junk. Always thought it was a bit dirty as a younger kid in the early 90's at an Arts and Craft store with Bob's face on everything particularly after he died. I thought... that guy isn't receiving any of this... and you can buy canvas wet paint cheaper than with name brand stuff... and brushes are better quality typically outside the name brand junk. Along with better oil paints too both cheaper or pricier. Brand is only a gimmick for the naive and dumb. Hope people find this out and boycott that brand. I think that's what Bob would want.

I've just finished watching the first series and there are so many times (almost every episode) when Bob gives credit to his teacher acknowledging his influence: "this technique was taught to me by a great friend, Bill Alexander", "i didn't invent this, i just learned it from him", "a wonderful teacher" etc etc.... I understand that Bill Alexander was upset with the competition, but he can't say Bob betrayed or stole from him. It's just a case of a student outshining his master.

Indeed. I was going thru a very bad time when Bob started his Show. I truly Believe in my heart finding Bob Ross and listening to his calm, loving voice and instructions, not only about his Craft, talent but his Empathy for The Human Beings ,also the Human Condition of those of us out in the dark watching him create a serenity he loved in The Alaska Landscape,Saved my Sanity. God Opened the Door to Bob and Blessed him Mightily for loving His Beautiful Creation ,This planet . The Kowalski's ? Reminder that the 'Smiling Faces" sometimes Lie, cheat and Steal from you in the Name of Love and Friendship. I've had that kind of Betrayal in my life also. It's a Pain that can Never be soothed.Beyrayal. Judas hanged himself because of the "30 Pieces" he took to Betray Christ. That Bible Story,( I'm not a Religious person) but the parables of the Bible are warnings and Lessons about Life's Path and what can happen , Not all Humans are Kind and Wonderful! The Kowalski Story proved that for sure. Karma has It's way with such Fools. I don't know what eventually happened to them . Betraying ,USEING Innocent Children is Dispicable!!! Attempting to Steal a person's Birthright, Bob's Name, can never be forgiven on this Earth as far as I'm concerned. The Devil certainly confronted Bob in the form of these horrible people. He did the best he could with the time he had left, for his Son. Then the Brother and " Friend" he depended on to look out for Steve's interests Betrayed him. What a Sad ,Greedy Mess they created, for the Son Bob loved so much. 💔🙏🎨🖌️🖼️ for Bob and Steve.

But then I was saddened that the joy Mr Ross gave the world is being used as a tool of greed. Bobs stuff should be available for everyone to enjoy. I have to say that, with due respect to BR, Bill Alexander is (was) a much better painter than Ross, and anyone who watches both can see it. (BTW, calling BA's voice a "Teutonic bark" is just an opinion of Bad Money. Alexander's is, to my ear, the voice of a man who knows what he's doing, and I rather like it.) But to BR's credit, he made artistic expression accessible and possible for many who would not have dreamed that they, too, could create and paint. And for that -- with a salute also to Alexander -- Ross deserves a ton of credit.

This video is so eye opening to artists. It's exactly what is happening today in music as well. Most artists don't own even their own name and likeness (some till perpetuity). There's more to your art than just making it. There's the business side and there's the industry as well, which are totally different than making the art itself. It's ruthless and ugly and you have to know how to handle it, for you and your family's sake. Do not let your passion blind you into being complacent, your enemy is closer than you think. Be smart and protect your art, it's your life.
