Oxycontin. Codeine. Fentanyl. All prescription drugs to which countless patients have become addicted. As America battles an opioid crisis that sees 170 citizens die every day, lawyers and prosecutors are trying to bring an end to Big Pharma’s impunity. How did it happen?
Midwest City, Oklahoma. Family doctor, Regan Nichols, is on trial charged with five murders for over-prescribing opioids. Her lawyer insists that she was tricked into writing prescriptions by junkies and is being made a scape-goat. But others believe that doctors like Nichols bear a large responsibility for the crisis now engulfing the country.
Strong, opium-based pain killers like Oxycontin were traditionally only given to cancer sufferers. But from in the mid-1990s, they were rebranded and aggressively marketed for all types of pain. Patients were assured that these highly addictive drugs were completely safe. By the time the dangers of these pills became apparent and regulators started restricting access, it was too late. Denied the prescription drugs they had become dependent on and with a chronic lack of resources to treat addiction, addicts turned to harder drugs like heroin.
In this film, we follow those trying to reverse the trend: addicts struggling to get clean, lawyers and prosecutors trying to hold someone accountable and the police force building prevention.
This documentary was produced by Babel Press and directed by Sophie Przychodny. It was first released in 2019.

So true, I have the worst pain of my life right now and need surgery so bad but since covid they canceled mine till God knows when. I can't get out of bed without medication and its so sad how hard I have to fight to have pain medication its fucking ridiculous and they need to start letting people make up their own minds about what's right for them. Its so unfair and it makes me so angry and upset that they won't help me. I am a single mom and I can't just stay in bed all day screaming and crying in complete and total agony. America is FUCKED up! So what country do I need to go to to get the pain meds at my free will. I'm talking about walk in the pharmacy tell them what I need, pay,and go my way?????

@@AbnormalMom6000 I can relate. I just had major surgery not quite 3 weeks ago. The doctor took out 2 discs in my neck & replaced them. I wore a cervical collar until this past Thursday. Lol, I was given muscle relaxers & vicodan. 🙄 I was treated as just a number, the same as every other person. This should not be the case! Everyone is different & giving me those is useless. I don't want to be taking anything for an extended period of time, as I have several chronic pain diseases that I deal with on a daily basis without medication. This is the 2nd surgery for me this year. The other was in February & I was given absolutely nothing. I don't agree with cutting into someone's body & then letting them suffer. Hoping that you find some relief! BK in PA

I really do feel for your father, that's horrible but there is also another flip side, I'm 33, last year had a disc bulge so I had to stop my bathroom renovation business, I was prescribed Oxycodone and started at a low dose, fast forward 1.5 years I'm still waiting for my operation and the dosage of my medicine is about 120,mg Oxycodone daily, they work and they are great... However my life since taking these pills has changed dramatically due to the addictive side of these pills, I'm now fighting a daily battle, if I stop taking them I go into withdrawals, I'm suffering from deep depression and I've been told the pills are to blame due to the level of dopamine or serotonin I'm used to from these pills, I'm now in pain and addicted because the pills don't really work now but the addiction remains, if I could go back before I took the pills and was only dealing with pain not addiction I would go back in a heartbeat, so I really do feel for your father but he also dodged a huge bullet specially at his age addiction would suck, I wish everyone suffering with chronic pain finds peace through all this suffering and live their best lives they deserve ! ❤️

@@Nunya_Biznes So in your opinion chronic pain sufferers, people who will never get better, people will never find relief from something other than a pain medication should suffer until they die? Sometimes, in an effort to relieve the pain that they can't stand any more they commit suicide. It's extreme but it does relieve the pain. When doctors stopped prescribing pain medication it opened up a new field, pain management practices mostly run by anesthesiologists. They prescribe the drugs if needed with a good bit of control over the patients. Irregular urine collection and analysis to test if the patient is supplementing his prescription or no longer taking it and selling it. As a chronic pain patient for 21 years I'm fine with this system. It keeps the junkies out as much as possible. My prescription doesn't relieve all the pain but it helps take the sharpness out of it. I was able to continue working pulling voice and data cabling systems. I really had no choice since I was self employed when it started. I'd never have been able to get a job if I hadn't been. All of this paranoia about the opioids has done a great deal of harm to the chronic pain community. Many people blame us for the actions that cause people to get themselves addicted. A normal person could have a 500 pill prescription for 30 mg Morphine ER sitting in a drawer and never take more than prescribed. Survivors need to ask themselves what made the addicted get that way. I believe it is a mental addiction long before it becomes physical. None of this was supposed to affect the chronic pain patients. Instead we are now under-prescribed or traveling hundreds of miles to a pain management clinic to get our prescriptions. I feel for you folks but no one pushed those pills down your relative or friends throat.

When chronic pain isn't managed we have an increase in suicides and people resorting to heroin! Part of the problem is people who legit need help don't get it and we're ALL grouped together as drug seekers. I went to ER with the worst headache of my life. I was accused of being a drug seeker and sent home. 2 wks later my Dr did a MRI and I had had a stroke... At 35! I was in horrible pain, then felt absolutely disregarded and I was horribly hurt. Next time I went it happened again, and yes I'd had another stroke! Is it right for Drs to dismiss people because they are afraid someone is going to fool them into ordering unneeded meds? Is it right that even cancer patients have to scream and beg for moderate relief while dying? All aspects of this need examined, not just look and say "oh, there's too many addicts". There are also people like me who desperately need help.

I had severe endometriosis that went unnoticed for years because a Dr yelled at me and told me I was a drug seeker and flagged my file permanently. I remember vowing not to trust another Dr again and strongly considered suicide that day. I was 22 years old when I began making my own opium medicine to control the pain. Of course I became dependent. After multiple surgeries and eventually hysterectomy, the Dr told me that I would not be given any opioids the day after surgery. Thank GOD the anaesthetist said that was unreasonable and prescribed enough oxy for the week. Imagine how surprised that Dr was when they found out I’d asked for LESS pills than suggested to me. Now I’m forever seen as a drug seeker despite multiple surgeries PROVING the severity of my issues.

Oxy was never and still isn't supposed to be given as a take home prescription post op. It's also proven to be no more effective than 4 percs or 4 Norco 10s in relieving pain. Not how much you feel, or how good, or any of that. Strictly pain relief. I'm worried that you expected Oxy post op and I wonder if that was the cause of the Dr outburst.

I think a lot of people are ignoring two major reason for the crisis. They are, pharma companies should not be permitted to advertise on radio, TV or social media, there are only 2 countries in the world where that's legal, the US and New Zealand, and it should be illegal for medical professionals to receive a kick-back or any other benefit from pharma companies for prescribing their products. As it stands, doctors are financially incentivized to over-prescribe or prescribe medications that shouldn't be prescribed at all.

aussiemedia1959 - doctors prescribe drugs, not drug companies. It sounds like you are going out of your way to not blame the doctors and treat them as if they are naive 6th graders who are innocent poor victims of a mean drug company. @@puma.will.pounce7590 I understand what you're saying, but Purdue lied to doctors, telling them that Oxycontin was not really addictive, and the FDA also is responsible for allowing it to be prescribed for general pain relief in the first place. I'm in Australia and here doctors would never prescribe an opioid for long term use, and if they did, they would at least make the patient aware of the risks. I'm not absolving doctors of responsibility, in fact in my comment I stated that doctors were receiving a financial advantage to prescribe medications like Oxycontin. What I'm saying is that a system where a pharma company can pay off doctors to prescribe their drugs, is broken

I broke my wrist several years ago. After several breaks previously I knew it was broken. The body goes into shock. Being former military, I made a makeshift splint with a magazine and duck tape and went to urgent care. The doctor saw me initially and scoffed at me when he saw my splint and when I told him my wrist was broken. He said “I’ll be the judge of that”. I sat in the waiting room for 3 hours in agony. Once I was seen and they performed a X-Ray and confirmed the fracture, the doctor walked in and said “I’m so sorry. We see so many drug seeking people in here daily I didn’t believe you”. He asked if I had a ride and injected me immediately with Demerol. And have me a 3 day supply of pain killers on the spot until I could see the Ortho. Perfect example of how and why abusers of medication ruin it and negatively impact those in true pain.

I was on OxyContin 12 years for degenerative disks and I took even less than I was prescribed. Until June 2013 when the dea shut my dr down for over prescribing OxyContin, which in all actuality according to the PDR-physicians desk reference, has no limits to the amount a doctor can prescribe, only recommended dosage. It took me one month to recover from this atrocity by myself!

Im in Scotland and our drs are far stricter on opioid prescriptions. I left hospital after an 11 hour op in my brain on paracetamol. My son was offered oramorph 2 weeks ago for a severe back injury which he did not want as they make you stay in hospital longer. Now remember we have free health care and prescriptions in Scotland. My mum also refused oral morphine for severe arthritis as she hated the side effects. Even sleeping tablets and drugs like diazepam are only prescribed for a few days. I now take amitryptyline for severe nerve damage in my neck/shoulder. We tend to prescribe opiates for end of life care. Plus if we are working we tend to get paid time off to treat whatever is wrong with us unlike America.

Sad part is a big reason people get hooked on the painkillers even knowing better, is because it's the only option. Alternative treatments are more expensive and take longer, so you cannot afford it plus the time you would have to take off work is literally impossible. But the pills are cheap and make the pain go away so you can stay at work and feed your family.

All because of the lies, bad science and corrupt doctors who influenced the CDC to set up guidelines that punish the patient and imprison the doctors who care about their patients. My daughter is not an addict, she gets no high, she just wants pain relief. Addicts have rights, chronic pain patients dont.Addicts choose their drugs, pain patients do not choose pain. It happens to them but they cannot say, I need opiates, they work. The 2016 guidelines are a complete disaster, killing thousands, worldwide. Robin Herb …I actually believe this to be true Robin. The crisis actually comes in the form of people that are using opioids for pain management and slipping into a deeper level of usage patterns. Yes this does happen but…Then the Doctors just cut them off instead of initiating progressive titrations to lower levels of use. If you cut off a person on opioids suddenly, they will often be driven to the streets..and a meet-up with Fentanyl. As an aside, if you cut off a person on benzodiazepines suddenly …you could quite possibly be inadvertently causing a seizure or death. Opioids may not be much different. So, to your point, it may not be the actual use of opioids that often causes death..but rather the sudden cut-off by a doctor brought in front of the Medical Board and told he is prescribing too much. In fact, in Switzerland, they instituted a heroin program where addicts can come in and receive hospital grade heroin..at their preferred dosage…free if taken at the hospital..and not made available to be taken out of the facility. The overdose deaths from heroin in Switzerland have plummeted..as has tertiary surrounding crime..associated with paying street dealers extortionate prices for the drug. In fact, many addicts have been actually able to re-join the workforce…and as the “thrill” of obtaining illegal heroin disappears…so does the fascination of being able to “score” it. It’s like an underage kid buying cigarettes…but then when of legal age…they are available but no longer offer the thrill of being able to buy them as contraband. The Swiss program is generally hailed as a massive victory.

Unfortunately, the pandemic hit, which stopped face-to-face appointments. I was determined to come off them, so we started to cut the patches down using a graph to ensure I wasn't going up and down with my doses. When I got to see my pain consultant and told him what I had done, he said it was dangerous, but admired my efforts. I see it that as the fentanyl didn't give me much benefit, I may as well be in pain without such drugs in my system. I am still searching for a solution. I cannot take ketamine, although it works brilliantly. The dangers with the doses make it too risky.

What I don’t understand is why people blame the doctors for prescribing the medicine, but never blame the person who willingly took it. Nobody is holding a person hostage at gunpoint to tell them to take more than prescribed. A person with common sense can tell what their body is able to tolerate when taking medicine whether it is opioid, or non-opioid. If the prescribed amount is more than you can handle, then you can tell the doctor this and another route can be taken. Irresponsibility needs to be the word used for a person abusing medicine. Addicts not only harm themselves, but makes it extremely hard for those who legitimately need certain painkillers to function daily. When a person abuses prescribed pain medicine, then they are being selfish to later cry wolf when they won’t admit that it was their own actions that made them addicted. People need to stop blaming others when loved ones die due to opioid overdose. The blame needs to be on the person who did it because it was their choice.

Now I use a walker to get around and a scooter when I have to walk in a big store or go to a flea market or anything fun. My pain stole anything I used to enjoy as a human so I have adjusted things and now I enjoy other things and I help others. Now that I have said that. Since 2012 I am on around the clock pain, and something for my break thru pain, nerve medications bc of my injuries over time my lower leg pains are a 9 before I take my medicine and after it's a 4. My point is this my body is dependent on my medicine but I am not an addict. There is a difference and if you don't know what the difference is the please look it up. I am so sick of the accusations of my prescribed medication being blamed like doctors being blamed. When will people be held accountable for their actions? I have chose to hold myself accountable. During the pill mills we're happening in my state of Florida I was treated like a drug addict by the pharmacies and cut off from my medicine bc a pharmacist was trying to play my doctor and why I was trying to get my medicine from the same doctor and same pharmacy. It's not always medical malfeasance, what about the pharmaceutical companies who pushed so many of them? Look at what Purdue Pharma and the Sackler family did, they lied to Drs and said that OxyContin wasn't as other addicting as shorter acting narcotics. I know they were sued, but seriously what does that really do? Some people need medications and now they can't get them because the FDA and others didn't put guidelines in place or put a stop to a lot of it when it first got started. People are overdosing on fentanyl because they're not going to go without their pain meds. Going through the withdrawal from narcotics is horrendous and contrary to what many were led to believe, can cause heart problems and even death. The so called bell has been rung and there's no unringing it now.

I was studying for the USMLE the other day and a lot of questions answers were 'prescribe oxycodone' like whaaat?? We shouldnt be prescribing it so casually. Dont blame doctors all the time. Sometimes its what they are taught.

What a controversial subject . I myself am on Oxycotin and it makes the difference . I mannage the use of it and take as needed . It allows me to manage my life and maintain my independance . Ive been at the point where death sounds sweeter than the constant pain that can be crippling . So now when my children and grandchildren visit I can smile back at their love for me , and what a joy that is , whereas without my medecine I'm be a sack of pain and selfpity in the corner neither wanting to talk nor listen . Ohh yes , there are going to be people who will abuse not just the medication but everything including life itself and good luck creating a perfect world for them . The idea that government should create rules and have beaurocracy enforce such . Makes me cringe . Well these are my thoughts and I'm against the idea of any Doctor who is trying to spare his patient pain should be punnished Also ? Nobody likes loosing a loved one or dealing with its consequenses . I hope that the complainents are'nt seeking a reward in these cases

I was prescribed only 5mg Percocet awhile ago and I remember sitting in my place high on this shit thinking the room could be on fire and it wouldn't mattered. At only a small dosage level it is additive. Eventually I had to flush them down the drain after my pain subsided from the skiing accident I had if I didn't im not sure where Id be. All I know is alot of friends are dead from it.

It seems to me that it is difficult to blame doctors for prescribing pills with a high content of drugs, which are really effective for pain, if patients themselves prefer such fast and effective methods of pain relief, despite the fact that all people are well aware of addiction to narcotic drugs.

"all people are well aware of addiction to narcotic drugs" Are you sure that's the case? Regardless, since the people are so well informed, let's remove doctors out of the equation and allow people to self-medicate. And since everyone knows the laws of physics, let's allow anyone to design and certify bridges! It's all good.

I'm a single mom who lost my son due to a dirty Dr giving my son fentanyl and oxycodone, morphine, Dilaudid and tramadol all at once. Tomorrow will be his birthday 😢 and I don't have any sympathy for you drug friends who are old enough to know better. You care more about yourselves than all the kids who have died. @@ang123brando8 educate yourselves. In addition, 386,380 patients followed on opiates. TWO: two had an issue and became euphoric. Docs changed the opiate from Percocet to Vicodin, both patients had no addiction. Addiction is in the.brain. Either you are prone to addiction. 4,000 years of using “god’s only plant” ....millions are given opiates per year. If what they said is true, we’d have dooe fiends running around the USA. I have headaches frequently with nosebleeds. My neurologist prescribed me pain patches that incapacitated me and my dad rushed me to hospital. The patches of 50 mg Duragesic ie…fentanyl. My respiratory rate was low along with low heart rate. No one except cancer patients should be using duragesic with out being monitored. I’m so sorry for these patients and family members. I’m only alive because of my anal retentive Dad and his cuff. I’m wonder why my doc would prescribe it for a headache because he wasn’t the pill mill type of person.
