Let's talk about stories...characters, endings, and why our desire for content can't come before the value of stories. It's a conversation I think that matters now that the strikes are ending.

"The moment in isolation we remember." Man, you hit the nail on the head. It seems like that's all fantasy/action blockbusters are these days. They just want memorable "moments" instead of a lasting impact from the films and characters itself.

"Be defended by some, but eventually forgotten by all" Damn good line, there. Just like in every age, profit and art/storytelling don't belong together. If we want art and stories, it's gotta be without profit being the endgame. And these huge corporations that only care about maximizing profit won't ever be fertile ground for art to flourish. Just the other day, DreamWorks, an animation studio that gave us diamond stories decided to stop in-house animation, with everything (lack of direct communication that help a production run smoothly) that implies. Stories are still being told, but you won't find them with these people anymore (and that's definitely not the fault of the creative people working in these studios). Good video, Okiro, missed you.

The value of stories is about the message. We humans don't have kept the stories for millenias for fun. Stories are a tool to teach children about the world and right vs wrong. We have kept the good stories and have forgotten many weaker ones. Modern Hollywood seems to neglect the value of a good story. Star wars was more than lightsabers and space battles. A bad story will always stay bad. But a good story can be rediscovered. Some underperforming Disney movies got new appreciation through Disney+

Great content. There's another video that parallels your great work, "Who is Killing Cinema?" except we, too, are also to blame, as you say.

Love that Capaldi quote you featured at the end. Doctor Who is such an interesting example in the context of this discussion, as it is a long-running IP, and looks a lot like content without an ending due to the structure of the show, but in spite of that it still (for the most part) manages to deliver satisfying character arcs, plots, and stories that know when to end. And for a franchise with as much history as it has, it's done a great job at avoiding reliance on the cheap tricks that other younger franchises have fallen into using.

If you have nothing to say thematically, then your stories will fundamentally have nothing to keep them alive in people's hearts. We remember Lord of the Rings and Star Wars because we remember hope in the darkest hour, and fighting against cruelty and injustice. We remember Pirates of the Caribbean because we remember camaraderie and found family against the destruction of freedom. If you have nothing to say, if you water everything down until you have nothing but the lowest common denominator, precision-made in a lab to appeal to the most people and, subsequently, to no one at all, then... god, nothing will be memorable.

I think the large legacy franchise should be relegated to fanworks, now. You want more Star Wars or Marvel or DC? Write it yourself and share it with your fellow fans, but only financially support new things.

Well said. I agree with everything. They try to milk big names untill the audience cant take it anymore. The great stories are mostly dead. There are a few movie every year that are worth watching but you can count them on one hand. Star wars for example. I think they should let the franshise rest for a few years. Then bring it back to the bjg screen with a new story and characters.maybe tell the stories about the jedi origin. Or a story from the age of the old republic.

For all the critiques I've heard of them, and they were certainly not perfect movies by any stretch of the imagination, I will always give props to the reboot of Planet of the Apes for effectively tying up all of the loose ends by the third movie and leaving basically no reasonable room for further sequels.

Fandom culture has certainly helped expedite the death of storytelling. Everything is about status quo, about not giving a shit unless your "ship" gets together at the end, about everyone having a redemption arc or happy ending incongruous with the characters or stories being told, and praise for dumbed-down, mindnumbing garbage that exists only to mine for bad AU fanfiction. Conflict is bad. Sad endings are bad. Anything that doesn't end with marriage and 2.5 kids is bad. It's a personal slight if you're expected to use your brain, or are expected to absorb info via context clues. Media literacy is low, and even the most basic plot points need to be verbally spelled out for an audience that can barely stay off their phones for 10 minutes because that would involve actually paying attention to the visual medium they are watching. And this death of media literacy is "good, actually", according to some fans. Stories apparently don't need to be plotted out, have a direction or themes. This is why studios are so excited about using AI to generate scripts: because people literally will not care. Paint-by-number algorithm stories have been what today's audience has been trained to want.
