She does not want to LEARN... she only wants to share ignorance. Come on... how will the next van chick break down if she were to actually learn.... how to say.... disconnect the 2 bolts at the waterneck, remove bad thermostat, replace with $12 new one... and retighten the 2 3/8" bolts? What fun would that be? I mean you miss out on peeing in a coffee can and everything dude.

you probably just had a hose bust and now its leaking or your radiator has a small crack in it. radiators are like $150.00 and any super easy to replace. usually like 4 bolts and c clamps over a 2 hoses gonig into it

I got to give it to you. One of the things about adventure, taking chances and living life is how you react when something goes wrong. A lot of people freak out. Older people can be calmer and more accepting because they have been through experiences and know it will pass. But for you to be young and still react so smoothly is an attribute. Also people remember the adventure but they really cherish and laugh about the hiccups they survived.

$600 to tow is insane. Wait until the next day. Pay the $40 and see what's wrong. They might be able to fix you for $100 to $200 right there. Plus, there has to be a dealership way closer. I'm betting right where you are.

Sweetie Ahle. You are industrious. Tip: pick up a repair manual for your van. Engines are in sections. The cooling section has to do with overheating. The ultimate traveler will eventually get around to knowing how to fix it yourself. You can buy basic tools to fix it also. The Zen of fixing things. It’s not as difficult as you might think. 😊 great video.

You either have: A hole in one of your resevoir hoses, You have a blown Head Gasket which is allowing Oil to flow into your Radiator, Your Radiator cap might have a broken seal, or Your Radiator Thermostat has seized. You really should travel with someone who knows how to fix cars =/ Stay safe!
@chrisgregory8805
@chrisgregory8805 6 жыл бұрын
Hi Girl, Some advice; 1st, check your oil, make sure it's not milky white, if so you blew a head gasket, bad. 2nd check all water clamps upper and lower & check for signs of seepage. 3rd if all the above is good run the engine with high heat on, what you're trying to do is free up the thermostat which would be the last possible issue. If the engine is still overheating then the issue is a thermostat, a $15. part and a couple bolts. Maybe 1 hr for a mechanic fix. Good luck.

YUP! There's a99% chance if they just replaced the T-stat (or even just took it out in an emergency situation) and added pure antifreeze she could have driven to the next shop to avoid the $600 tow bill.

I don’t understand...you didn’t want to pay the $40 assessment on a Sunday with low skilled workers, I get it. But it was already 5pm at that time. Why not have waited till morning to see someone that was good at that place instead of wasting $600 for that tow to the other town and not to mention the $$ you were gunna be charged anyway for the assessment/fix as well?? You couldn’t have waited one more night and save your wallet.

@@JenniferBui So that was the only place in town that worked on cars? $600 for towing is outrageous. I would have asked around if there was anyone in town who had a home garage. In addition to the towing charge, she will have to pay whatever additional charges there will be in repairs. It just doesn't make any sense to me for that to have been her only option.

@EnergyKatya

Normally the most common causes of overheating are leaks from old radiator hoses or an old radiator has sprung a leak. I keep a spare pair of radiator hoses and a can of stop leak with me as well as water and some extra antifreeze especially when it is cold weather because just water will freeze and maybe even pop a freeze plug in the engine. Also heater hoses can spring a leak so I keep a length of heater hose with me too. Of course you need to be a little mechanically inclined. I am grateful I had a master mechanic for a father and used to help him service cars in my younger years.

This female would not have paid that much. Nothing else between there and something else? Sure the not being able to get it in the garage posed a problem. But I’ve been stranded before. I can fix the basics. But I’ve also called mobile mechanics before. They are about 90-150 which yeah is more then the 40. But no towing required and if they can repair it they will go get the parts and come back or they know the mechanics in the area that can fix it. Needed an extensive repair once and the mobile mechanic after discovering this called a few local mechanics and then hitched me to the one I felt I could afford. How can anyone be sure the mechanic 169 miles away can fix something without knowing what needs fixing? On a separate note AAA premium might be a better investment the 169 miles would have been free then. For me in CA it’s $119 annually and 200 or less miles is free. Which if you compare that to a $600 tow pretty much pays for itself. Like even buying the membership on the spot could have saved her. And yes it’s possible to buy and use the same day.

Same exact thing happened to me traveling cross country in the middle of nowhere. You were wise to stop and call a tow truck. I kept driving until I reached a mechanic. By that time the engine was ruined, the cylinders literally started to melt. It was just a stuck thermostat. After having the thermostat replaced, I was able to keep going until I found a Ford dealership. I was driving a Ford Bronco leased by my employer and under warranty.

in case this happens again, perhaps consider ensuring you have a tow hitch on the front of the van. you can rent a uhaul truck with towing capacity for pretty cheap if you're only using it for a few hours, and they can be returned at any other uhaul store. alternatively, they do have towing trailers but i'm not sure they'd have one long enough, and the van is probably too wide to fit into one of the longer trucks.

If your car is overheating, it’s either your radiator, thermostat, or water pump. Generally when one goes bad you replace all three, because when one goes bad the other 2 are not far behind. If you continue to drive on it, you can cause a ton of damage to the motor. It also could be a hose, but if you don’t see one leaking, it’s the former problem. Trust me, I’ve been through this with multiple vehicles

What if the thermostat isn't the problem? It could have easily been an old radiator hose that finally burst open or even developed a pinhole, or the radiator could have a hole in it. We drove to Colorado once and had to get the radiator replaced in Pueblo.
@arnenystrom4283
@arnenystrom4283 6 жыл бұрын
A thermostat is cheap and easy to change and can be replaced in about 10 minutes. If it works, problem solved for less then $20 and 10 minutes of work. As for leaks, you can usually spot what's leaking and replace it quickly, hoses are cheap and easy. The point is, most things with the cooling system are easy and cheap on an older car and when you have time on your hands, fixing it yourself isn't a big deal. After all, there are only 12 parts in the entire cooling system which if you replaced all of it probably adds up to less then $600. For a complete breakdown of a cooling system see: www.carparts.com/classroom/coolingsystem.htm

Also get some Truck BCD (a small box that reads the detect code of your vehicle, cost 20 dollar to hundreds dollar according to feature sets and precision) which will read the detect code when connected to the fuses there (read the manual to connect properly). Check your oil to see if there’s any coolant in it if there is you probably have a bad head gasket and that’s why your van is over heating. It doesn’t sound like you have thermostat problem but I would know without more info. Hope my info helps and I’m hoping I’m wrong a bad bad head gasket can cost a pretty penny.

Your ability to handle a stressful situation as if it's just a minor setback is inspiring! I would have asked (bribed) the guy $20 to call the mechanics that are not there and bribe them to come in and work Maybe pay them an extra $50 or $100 just to come in and work on it. If that was not an option then I would have waited a day before spending $600 just for a long tow, but that's what I think I would have done. I hope you are having better days now and your van is road ready!

I occasionally take van trips. I don't live in my van like you do, but I've driven to Florida from Ohio twice. Something for peeing in a van, I drilled a hole in the floor of the van and screwed a garden hose onto a two liter bottle with the end cut off. A two liter bottle screws perfectly onto a garden hose. When I wake up at night and need to pee, I just pee in the two liter bottle and it ends up on the ground outside. I'm a man, don't know if that would work for a woman, but it's something to consider.

Hi Ahle, another great video. I mean, welcome to ownership in general right. Whether a heater in a house breaks or your water pump goes out, a repair is a repair. Of course it's a little different on the road, with way fewer resources than if you were in a house, lol. But yes, do remember, assuming it is your water pump that failed, turning on your heater activates an electric water pump to flow hot coolant for the cabin heater, keeping your engine temps down. You'll know if it's working by watching your gauge move back to the normal range. This could allow you to, at least, avoid an expensive and time consuming tow. Love love love all the experiences that you share.

Sometimes when buying an old van it won't be new, it's sensible to replace the oils, fluids, belts, tyres, brakes etc. as needed FIRST because it's so much easier than breaking down in the middle of nowhere and have them fitted later...

You shouldn't have to add coolant at all, the system is sealed and shouldn't lose any. Don't put water in it, water has a lower boiling point than antifreeze meaning it will boil off over time, water also has a higher freezing point meaning it will freeze in the winter. Use 50/50 coolant or full concentrate antifreeze. 😎

We had the same problem, we were going camping down to payson, Arizona and then the van started to heat up, we let it cool and continued along the trip. After 5 miles it heated up again, we then had to call a tow truck and then it arrived we checked everything and it turned out to be the thermostat

You said you added "water." I'm not sure if you're just saying that generically or if you meant coolant. Adding pure water is not good as it changes the coolant mix to where the fluid heats up to the point of boiling. What engine coolant does is reduces the boiling point and the chemical mix ensures the fluid stays within normal engine operating perameters. I believe in one of your vids you showed that ou had emergency fluids. What I suggest is having a bottle of pre-mix coolant in the future. Coolant is a mix of water and the actual coolant, but instead of mixing the two yourself to try to get the right ratio (generally 50/50) you can just buy premix and pour it in anytime you'd need it. Hope everything turned out well and keep following your passion.

RageousMode water has a higher boiling point than coolant and can be used in situations like this. The purpose of the coolant is it's "anti-freeze". That's why for warmer climates you can use a higher ratio of water: coolant. Or even pure water. Not trying to argue, just want to spread knowledge

So there is a possibility there isn't enough antifreeze in her cooling system and the water is freezing in the radiator even with the engine hot, stopping coolant flow through the rad, overheating the engine.
@AlA-ok5jh
@AlA-ok5jh 6 жыл бұрын
Not a hose leak as you would of mentioned water is leaking on pavement. Overheating I think is a) loose fan belt b) thermostat c) not enough antifreeze in radiator. Yes antifreeze not only prevents water from freezing but it prevents the rad from overheating. Too much water % in rad & not enough antifreeze the water will get too hot..But too much antifreeze in rad is not good too. Gotta have the right amount of each water & antifreeze. Mechanics have a portable tester that tells them if the mixture is ok. Surprised you did stay at this repair shop till the Monday when their more experienced mechanic would show up.$600 to tow is a lot. Possibly if it's just a thermostat replacement maybe that 's. $400-$500 if they are not greedy types. But maybe you just sensed something that you felt not comfortable with this repair shop. Go with your gut feeling. Hope it works out to your satisfaction. Your friend looks like a nice guy. God bless.

I know this is an old video, but I wanted to comment on the pee jar. (They were called "slop jars" in my grandparents' time, when they kept them under the bed for the middle of the night, instead of running out to the outhouse.) When camping in a tent, I always used 2 gallon ziploc bags, one inside the other. They stand up pretty well by themselves. I have to go looking for your other vids to find out what this turned out to be. Really enjoying you and your channel.

Stuck thermostat. Had the belt let go, the alternator light would have also come on since this van has a serpentine belt. If the water pump had gone, it would be a loud grinding noise or simply coolant leaking out the weep hole of the pump. Thermostats are just a spring loaded temperature sensitive wax pellet. The wax gets old and they gradually stop opening. Eventually you overheat and hopefully the idiot light goes off.. as if the steam wasn't warning enough. I always install a real coolant temperature sender and gauge in my trucks. Real oil pressure gauge too. When you get the repair made, you might consider having real instruments installed. You will then be in the habit of noticing them and over time, you can predict problems in advance.

Pep Boys couldn't even replace a burned bulb. I bought a $5 light bulb for my head light and it would cost me $5 to install, it took two guys over 40 minutes to replace it wrong. They had no clue on halogen bulb and they finally installed it in my car but they touched it with their hand. It was completely out of focus when I drove out of there. I had to replace the whole head lamp assembly the next day for $350.

air leak in coolant hoses, air leak in coolant reservoir, stuck thermostat, air leak in head gaskets, low oil causing friction.. That's all that can cause over-heating no matter what any "expert" argues(I likely have more experience with it).. Pray it's not the head gaskets especially on a van because the engine has to be pulled(which is why I use a SUV and camper instead of a comfy class C or B)..

I'm not sure if I've ever commented before to your vids, I've been binge watching to catch up. Your van breaking down is the same as some one living in a house and their hot water heater springs a leak or their heat/AC goes out. They will spend what it takes to fix it! I wouldn't be able to fix the heat or AC,but I could probably fix a hot water heater. I'm sure you could change a flat tire,but a leak like you had may have been more than you were prepared for. Don't mind the people telling you what you should have or should not have done,you did what was best in your situation! I love the vids! I love your life style! I was one step away from being in the same situation. Long story! Be safe! Keep the vids coming!

When I was a truck driver, I used Gatorade bottles to pee in. Folgers cans seem like they would work pretty good, especially for a female. For pooping, I'd recommend a bucket with a large trash bag. Just tie it up real good, wrap it in another bag, or a couple walmart bags, then throw it out at the nearest rest area or truck stop. It might sound gross, but that's what people do with dirty diapers and kiddie toilets when they're on the road, so not much difference. Oh, funny story, btw... One time I had to do that and I threw it into a trash can at a truck stop in Barstow, Ca. Then I saw this dude picking through the trash for cans and he was ripping all the bags open, lmao! I just about died from laughter when I saw him doing that. You'd think he'd know better than to do that at a truck stop, knowing truckers empty their junk there, lol.

Could be a stuck thermostat, resulting in the antifreeze not circulating and engine overheating. Or a leak somewhere, so that liquid antifreeze turns to vapor which doesn't cool the engine and it overheats and increases pressure which results in more antifreeze leaking out therefore more vapor...etc.

I think you where in the right place to get it fixed the first time at pepboys, not all cars have to fit in the garage as any mechanic even can work any car in a drive way outside, secondly they se]] the parts that the other shops order from them so they won`t charge the extra 30% on parts in their own shops and $600 should had fixed the problem not just move the problem somewhere else adding to the expense where you still have no idea if it could double the cost!...you got your home to wait anyways so what`s the difference on a extra day or 2 ? you might wait more to have the new shop order parts from pepboys and delivery anyways... from this point of view loosing water and overheating , you have a busted radiator hose (top or bottom) or worse also a busted thermostat ,hoses can just be $30 parts and thermostat even cheaper or a radiador leak also but non of that adds up to a $600 + job , maybe only if radiator gets change but is doubtfull, get a service book and learn what you have and what you can fix....I know you got the money and is your money but you are looking at too easy way to spend it without maybe asking at any of your relatives or a mechanic who can guide you and can help you with those decisions rather than just put lots of money on what could be a simple fix , money can give you a false sense of security when stranded alone near nothing.... well is done now ,so after $600 now you will find out how much more it will cost to fix it....in the future I suggest you learn a lot of easy DIY anyone can do first before throwing money at it! ,how to change the water hoses and/or carry the replacements in your van so no need to wait for part(not all shops or store carry them) and also carry radiator sealer in case it springs a leak you can pour it and let it self seal until you can get it fix and not stranded in deadland , also carry 5 gal of water at all times minimum to refill your water system to continue your journey until you hit a town or city .... if water was low I hope you did not only let it cool enough ( cold water on a overheated engine can crack or warp the motor just like a pouring cold water on a hot rock it will split witch then worse case is you need another engine) and then you have to fill water from the radiator cap not the reservoir plastic bottle... just keep in mind that any van,camper,motor home,etc. is moved by the engine and everyone out there cruising long distances needs to know basic knowledge of their own vehicles to fbe fixed on the road and some tools and basic parts to replace then in a emergency weather water system ,electrical, or fuel and patch tires... that also keeps you safe and self reliance ready... take care ,hope this criticism makes sense to you not just giving you a hard time because if you were my daughter I wish her to be helpful to be ready for emergencies in case she has no money for a $600 tow that still does not fix the problem and worse is to be stranded in the middle of nowhere where crimes are common too!... be safe my Hobo friend!

Dump some more water in and see if there's dripping underneath, if you can keep it from leaking with some duct tape, you might make it another length of distance to wherever you need to get it fixed. If it's not leaking (which I doubt since it was so low) then it might be something else like the pump itself. If the hole(s) is/are in the pump or an engine gasket, there might be more to the fix, but the tape may still get you there before steaming out.
