The state has been dying for years it's just gotten worse. Crime, housing prices and flood insurance have forced a lot of people out of New Orleans. Lack of meaningful jobs has forced out people around the state. There's mostly only service industry jobs available and a person can not survive on that. Sense 2000 several facilities tried to open in Louisiana but to do business in Louisiana, there's always someone who needs to be paid off. Mississippi welcomed them with a red carpet and tax breaks. For the hundreds of jobs they brought to rural areas. The biggest industry in Louisiana is oil and prisons. The oil industry is leaving the state for Texas because of corruption and refusal of the state to give tax breaks. Prisons have become an industry because the state says they don't have the money to operate them anymore. So private companies have stepped in to mostly run prisons in northern Louisiana. Where there are no meaningful jobs. African Americans left New Orleans after Katrina to Baton Rouge, Huston and Atlanta. They never returned because the low income housing they depended isn't their anymore. Yes, Louisiana has become more Hispanic because of Katrina and subsequent hurricanes. They came to work and they never left. Yes, Louisianas culture is dying because the old people dying and the young don't care about them anymore. Most traditions were gone long before Katrina. Like the French culture in western Louisiana. The youth have no interest in learning French or any dead traditions. The south has a reputation of nice friendly people. But there is a hostility in Louisiana that I have never understood. To outsiders, but to people in general. Louisiana isn't a friendly place to live anymore.

Things are changing fast and so much different than when I was a kid. Very different before and after Katrina as well. A little more seems to be lost each year.

This has been happening slowly since the early 1980s since the start of the Chinese Open Door policy. NW LA used to have so many factories... at least 10. Now I doubt they even have 1 large one. You are right about Hispanic inhabitants. It's never too late to start learning Spanish! (I'm in Houston and a lot of people speak to me in Spanish). Ah yeah, when I go to hood'ish areas of Houston or Dallas, White people are definitely the minority. It's easier to find someone from India or Pakistan before you can find a white person

Did you just accuse Houston of being full of Asians?

Good! people are leaving, so traffic is no longer bad and we have this amazing city to ourselves lol. living in a dying city is great! no overcrowding except at major events! Things will get cheaper. Also very interesting that we are going to become a latin American city with the increase in hispanic populations

Lots to Texas, Mississippi, Alabama, Tennessee, Carolinas etc. etc. Might be more Cajuns in Texas than Louisiana at this point!

I moved to TN this year in my mid-40s. I wasn't even in nola. I'm a BRian. Economics and the Weather played the two biggest roles. Leaving my family was heartbreaking but the only ones left are my parents now.

There are plenty of news articles about the noticeable drop in Louisiana and New Orleans population. The census also documents that fact and when you lose enough population you lose political representation in the U.S. Congress House of Representatives. it.usembassy.gov/how-does-the-u-s-census-affect-congress/#:~:text=The%20maximum%20number%20of%20representatives,or%20decline%20will%20lose%20representatives. www.nola.com/news/business/new-orleans-population-decline-is-highest-in-us/article_ec88bede-e2dd-11ee-8582-4fc7d9e49977.html bizneworleans.com/report-new-orleans-metro-area-continues-to-lose-population/ www.fox8live.com/2023/12/28/third-year-row-louisianas-population-declines/ Hondurans are the largest international group that have moved into the state not Mexicans.
