My name is David Bowie. I'm 33 years old. My house is in the northeast section of Morioh, where all the villas are, and I am not married. I work as an employee for the Kame Yu department stores, and I get home every day by 8 PM at the latest. I don't smoke, but I occasionally drink. I'm in bed by 11 PM, and make sure I get eight hours of sleep, no matter what. After having a glass of warm milk and doing about twenty minutes of stretches before going to bed, I usually have no problems sleeping until morning. Just like a baby, I wake up without any fatigue or stress in the morning. I was told there were no issues at my last check-up. I'm trying to explain that I'm a person who wishes to live a very quiet life. I take care not to trouble myself with any enemies, like winning and losing, that would cause me to lose sleep at night. That is how I deal with society, and I know that is what brings me happiness. Although, if I were to fight I wouldn't lose to anyone

I've been making vaporwave since 2015. I feel it really is much more and much more varied than the "memewave" that most assume it only is. I don't sample in my songs, but the use of sampling has never delegitimized a genre before, and it shouldn't now. Sure some vw artists rely too heavily on samples, but that shouldn't speak for the entire genre. Just my two cents
@slothstradamus895 жыл бұрын
Absolutely agree man. When someone says its justa meme genre and is only samples "slowed down" I point them to SURFING and their album Deep Fantasy. Sure, slowed samples, but they throw in their own singing/lyrics and instrumentation. The songs are definitely theirs and not jist samples.

I think the reason why George has had such success is that he incorporates live instruments and live vocals and has a lot of different parts and moving parts in his songs. Vaporwave in general was pretty stale which is why it died out quite a bit. Even George and Anthony said the same in this interview. If you're not going to take this sound forward like George did I Would never recommend anyone doing this type of music. Not only will it most likely not get super popular but it won't be worth much to the artform and genre.

Saw the last show of the 100% Electronica tour in Brooklyn and I was not prepared for how great it was. I mean I LOVE the Slide album and I've been a fan of all the Esprit stuff. But George is not lying when he says the live show is the ultimate experience of the music. It takes on a completely different character. The music is all there. The sounds and lyrics are immediately familiar. But it is transformed by the energy. And I think it is really because of the specific blend of influence that Slide is borne of. How do we dance at a Clanton show? There were times I felt we were about to open up a pit. There were times I was grooving and vibing out. The hype was pervasive. Our man started the set in a Seal t-shirt like a boss. Lastly, the other artists on the tour were excellent. Negative Gemini was new to me, but I'd definitely see her again. Bought a tape and T-shirt from her immediately. (And speaking of merch, I did NOT see that death metal Clanton shirt after the show and maybe I'm blind but I would have bought that shit immediately.) If you can, go see this dude.

Good interview. I appreciate what George is trying to do. Dude is making art, not just music. Super creative. The nostalgia part of vaporwave is complex. It was a time that did in fact exist. Some of us lived through the 80s and 90s, getting to see the culture in real time. Of course how we saw the future back then didn't play out exactly. Looking back, we are nostalgic for a time that did exist, but not how we perceived it in our youth. It's trippy for sure. Glad that I found vaporwave and then George.

32:00 Vaporwave on its face concerns itself with stuff that guys George's age had on their minds in adolescence, and so the music summons a certain type of nostalgia associated with those things - like a faded Pepsi can left out in the sun at the beach, and radio ads etc. I wonder how people from a generation before and after feel about the aesthetic of Vaporwave (both the sound and visuals) considering their perspective on the source material was different.

Commenting on the convo 29 mins in: The way I see vaporwave and what has me hooked is, Even tho vaporwave is based from the past, it’s opened a MAJOR door when it comes to electronic music as a whole. Yes, most vaporwave has a smooth jazz feel but, now days, there’s tons a different styles of it and it’s only gonna grow even more. The future we were promised didn happen so, we’re making it happen. After a while, it’s not gonna have to be based on nostalgia or having to lived those times to get it, it’s always gonna make sense to any age and future cuz it’s actually good music.

Honestly.....what a WEIRD interview. I loved it...they touched on a lot, and I so appreciate it. But I found myself throughout feeling like I truly understood what George was saying....and waiting for Fantano to keep up. He often did keep up. The conversation often got into an interesting groove...which is why I kinda love this. But I think George needs to just fully own that he is VERY aware of what he is doing...and that what he is doing IS significant. I literally just stumbled across him maybe 5 hours ago....and I'm obsessed. His shit is fascinating. His approach to music is super creative and very well conceived. I'm an immediate fan. He's the artist I've been waiting for for years. It was just a bit off kilter watching this interview. I get the sense Anthony _gets_ all of this on one level....but doesn't fully realize how significant it all is. It's SO easy to make fun of Vaporwave. But it was easy to make fun of EVERY genre that ever existed...when it was just starting out. Punk was silly to so many people at first. But I think Vaporwave IS IN FACT today's Punk. And to truly _get_ that....is kinda liberating. It opens up all sorts of sonic possibilities. And George is a vanguard on that front. I'm kinda hooked.....

Music can be a meme, it can be ironic. It can still be music. Something having a layer of irony about it doesn't make it less. It doesn't make it not have something important to say, anything of value or substance. Comedians can be taken seriously, and their content can be, even if they are supposed to be funny too. To George though. I get that maybe you want to make people understand that your music isn't ironic at its core, and that's cool. Your artistic intent sounds to be that you are trying to conjure up a feeling, and what comes out is something that relates directly to you, and you hope others can feel it too. Either way, I came out of this interview wanting to search your music up, I like you, and your honesty about who, and what you are, and what your music is to you. I enjoyed the introspection in this interview

@@Draclord35 we have seen Anthony squat in the past and he isn't even up to the level of spy for how shit his form is. He's tourist level squat.

Vaporwave David Bowie... To me that just translates to ‘slowing down the entire Let’s Dance album’.

13:15 "That black tar heroin rush of nostalgia" And there it is, folks. That is, in short, vaporwave. And why I believe the genie can never be put back into the lamp now that it's out. Is it memey? Yes. Silly and absurd? Absolutely. But is it beatiful? Is it unique? You bet your fucking ass it is.

Normally I just write off Needledrop recommendations as him trying to showboat the most obscure artist he can find in an effort to make it look like he’s on the cutting edge of trend and taste in music... but George Clanton is genuinely great. 200% Electronica is fucking amazing.

Maybe he recommends them because he genuinely really enjoys their music, i seriously doubt he cares that much about perception

That's how he got popular was by covering mostly obscure music that was amazing. Then he started doing more and more mainstream stuff. It was gross to watch. This period (2019) is WAY past his 'sell out' phase. What I'm saying is... the needledrop of this time and the current needledrop is not what you describe. Your tastes would have to be pretty shallow to think of him in that light in 2019. He was that many years before 2019 though. And it was awesome. Remember the Tree? It was tree era and before.

No disrespect to Anthony, but you hadn’t focused so much of the interview on vaporwave. I feel like there were many other topics related to George’s music that you could’ve discussed with him
