Former Narcotics Detective here from Sacramento County. Thank you for covering a case I've never heard of before. I listen to true crime constantly while working out & have never heard one of my former nmates covered before... James Anthony Daveggio & Michelle Lyn Michaud. Michaud was in Sac County Jail when I was working there, fresh out of the Academy. It takes a lot to shock me after a decade in law enforcement. The way they tortured their victims is permanently scarred into my brain. There is a very well done true crime book that's easy to find online, that gives all the details of their murders. I like the way you cover cases, so I thought to give you this unusual suggestion. Take care!

Polygamy marriages are corruption... """And you will never be able to be equal between wives, even if you should strive [to do so]. From Quran surah Nisa"""... Muslim ummah keep telling others don't follow your desires, women are desires!. But desires can be very powerful. They can hold sway over the mind and lead a person away from reality. When a person follows desires and submits to them, without giving consideration to the guidance received from God, he goes astray. Following of desires is directly linked to misguidance. To understand the effect of desire it is important to analyze what desire does to human intelligence. It puts a curtain over the eyes of the mind. It makes a person so attached to its target that reality is overlooked. The conditions to understand reality include an objectivity to it. It means acceptance of reality whether palatable or bitter, whether it is for personal gain or against it. These conditions are not in line with the dictates of desire. In another verse Almighty Allah puts forth this truth in even stronger terms. He calls desire the god of some human beings. He says: Have you seen him who has taken his desire to be his god? (Q 25:43). Such a god has been condemned in the strongest terms in Hadith. The Prophet (s) has said: There is no god under the sky that has been worshipped other than Allah that is worse than the desire. (Taken from Tafsīr Namūne). No other deity is as despicable as the human being’s own desire. Imam al-Sādiq (a) says: Be apprehensive of your desires in the same way as you are apprehensive of your enemies. For there is no greater enemy for human beings than their own desires and what their tongues reap (Al-Kulaynī, al-Kāfī, 2: 336.) Following of desires is often not recognized for the lowly quality it is. It can be masqueraded as freedom, having fun, being with the masses, etc. It clads a veil over the person as well as others who are exposed to him. Only those who have insight and reflect on reality are able to see through it. This verse reminds us of the danger! Polygamy marriages come under desires!Polygamy marriages are corruption... Destroying the frist marriages!. Jabir reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Verily, Satan places his throne over the water and he sends out his troops. The closest to him in rank are the greatest at causing tribulations. One of them says: I have done this and this. Satan says: You have done nothing. Another one says: I did not leave this man alone until I separated him from his wife. Satan embraces him and he says: You have done well.” Source: Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2813 Grade: Sahih (authentic) according to Muslim """And you will never be able to be equal between wives, even if you should strive [to do so]. Allegedly, from the account of a friend who lived in Kuwait at the time, Nasra’s sister in laws were tormenting her daily before the wedding by constantly sending her videos and pictures of the gold and gifts her husband bought his new wife during the engagement period. I don’t know how accurate this information is but I was also told that the case was prolonged because of what they found on Nasra’s and the sister in laws phones, resulting in imprisonment of the sister in law and the husband for a short while. Another thing which may be inaccurate is, the husband on the wedding day that the mass murders happened took his new wife from the salon she was getting ready in directly to the hotel that they were going to consummate the marriage in after the celebration, without telling her that her mother has just passed away. This is all alleged and could just be rumours but it sheds light on the public perception of the time.

In these backwards cultures , the women have no privacy , constantly under the watchful eye of in-laws, love can’t flourish under such conditions, interfering and spiteful in-laws nearly always kill the fun in the relationship, it’s forbidden to break the bond of husband wife , but usually it’s alway the women in the family who enjoy getting their sons married multiple times , and they don’t care about the previous wives that they hurt.

Nothing justifies the loss of innocent lives but it's worth bearing in mind that Nasar was only 23 years old at the time, looking after two disabled children by herself while her husband was treating her cruelly every day. She suffered physical and mental abuse at the hands of her husband and his relatives on a daily basis. She was mentally broken and emotionally traumatised at the time. The last straw that broke the proverbial camel's back was being taunted by her husband and his new (younger than Nasar) wife's family before the wedding. I believe her claim that murder was never her intention, she simply wanted to ruin the celebration by setting a small fire and cause disruption. However, she wasn't aware that the tent's material was highly flammable.

I remember watching news coverage of this awful incident. Whilst there was a great deal of sympathy towards the wife, this kind of revenge is never, ever acceptable. Her husband blamed her for their children having severe learning and physical difficulties, without attempting to find out if he had passed on the issues. I've had an Islamic staff member who tried for about 5 years to conceive. She was checked, at her own request, and everything was found to be normal. Her husband was furious when she asked him to be checked. He wouldn't hear of him being the problem. They divorced and she soon remarried and had a child a year later. Her ex remarried and has no children.

Wow. That's sexist. Just like for centuries blaming women for gender of child if it's not a boy. When in fact it's the male who determines the gender. So much ignorance. As far as this case? It's horrific and indescribably wicked. However, marrying more than 1 is a recipe for disaster. I don't want to hear about cultural differences. It rarely works out. Human nature is the same wherever in the world. I believe she was bogged down and went insane. Temporary insanity might have worked in other places. However, she still has to pay for her crime. I guess my point is why bog down the woman. This was an added stressor she didn't need. She was like a cast-off. Who knows or who is to say she wouldn't eventually end up in the street begging once her husband started growing another family and lost even more interest in her? It's so sad and seems like fate. How else does one explain this? One more...Mental illness and deformities run high in this part of the world due to inner marriage between family members. Some members closer on blood. Others not as close...It's higher risk so to speak. Sad in any event...

Nasra was 18 at the time and had TWO children. This means she was a CHILD when she married. Knowing this culture she had NO choice in the marriage (women are treated as property and do not decide when and if they will marry). Her husband was 18 years older than her!! Would you allow your 12 year old daughter to marry a 30 year old man, or 15 year old to marry a 33 year old man????? Nasra's mental state was most likely as a result of sexual abuse. PS: Strange, NOT ONE mention of the new bride-to-be's age is mentioned in ANY article.

This reminds me of a traditional Danish ballad, “Hr. Peders Slegfred” (Sir Peder’s Mistress/common law wife) about a woman who’s husband divorced her and pretends they were never married, that she is only his mistress, for him to marry a new wife. She disguises herself as a servant at the wedding, and when the couple retreats to their marriage bed, she sets fire to the whole celebration, and every guest and the newlyweds die. The husband sees her, and begs her to help him, promising he will help her in the future, and the last lines are these: “Then she answered so loudly that she laughed: “I know so well how you keep your word!” Btw: they are given the names of Hr. Peder (Sir Peter) and Liden Kirsten (maid Kirsten, but lit. ‘small Kirsten’), but these are the two names given to all unmarried couples in Danish ballads. It just means that they are generic/not historical, and not married.

US watcher here and i personally love the international cases! i know i would never have heard of a lot of these otherwise, and i think they lend interesting and unique perspectives. despite the morbid and tragic nature of these dark moments in a place's history, i think it helps us as people to understand and empathize with each other. in a weird way, it's like hearing about something (even, again, something as morbid and tragic as this) that occurred where you live, where you consider home, makes people feel heard and seen. all that said, i would _also_ love to see some more obscure US cases from states that haven't been... for lack of a better word, _featured_ here yet.

@shweta Yeah, I'm with you that these people are guilty of all that, but deserving death, especially like that, is far fetched. Maybe the customs should change if it allows for something like marrying more wives while treating the first ones like trash to the point where someone feels this is a suitable solution. I mean, obviously I've never lived like that, but I'd be pissed if my husband just went and got remarried, while I'm supposed to give my blessing. It says a lot about how women are supposed to just accept this, without creating waves, by the fact that she wasn't initially even suspected of setting the fire.

Having such a lavish wedding for the second wife would have caused her hurt to deepen, the celebration implied everyone was happy except her, and no-one cared. I also wonder if she realised how devastating the fire would be?.. 3 minutes and the entire tent burned to the ground! I'm giving her leeway, perhaps she didn't realise the full destruction she she would cause. Is it possible she didn't know there was only ONE EXIT from a highly inflammable tent? and how would you have prefered her to express her frustration? what she did was horrible and I am in no way making excuses for her but in my honest opinion, in a country that brutally murders women for not covering their hair in public and views them as dispensable objects what do you believe was a better course of action? Talking to the husband who decided to marry another woman simply because his first wife didn't produce 'healthy' children or wasn't satisfying him. Cried and made a fool out of herself to her parents (who, let's be honest probably would've told her it was all her fault that her husband wasn't happy with her?) there was absolutely not a single person this woman could go to in her time of need, not a doctor that would've taken her seriously, not a neighbour that would've listened to her cry, not a friend to converse with to ease a little weight off her shoulders but possibly most depressing of all not a family member to be on her side. Do you genuinely believe that when her husband decided to take a new wife people weren't bashing and shaming her for not being able to satisfy him on her own? Because If you don't then I honestly don't know what to say to you. she wasn't just frustrated, angry and unhappy she was livid, embarrassed, ashamed, disrespected, belittled and most of all betrayed. The only way any living breathing, emotive human being could tell me that she was anything less than exactly that, a living breathing emotive human being who was backed into an inescapable corner, is if they themselves were more mentally unstable than her.
