I think Adonis should be considered more as the manifestation of “ unbridled desire”. Myrrha’s desire for her father, his repeated desire for the sexual encounter, Persephone’s desire for a child (or lover depending on the Version), Aphrodite’’s desire to live a life with Adonis, Ares desire to eliminate ate his mortal rival...even Adonis’ love of hunting... all of the characters are helplessly fixated on the object of their desire, to the point of total obsession. Adonis to me represents all fixations, preoccupations, and obsessions (or addictions) that overwhelm or thinking and dominate our actions and ultimately our lives.

In another version, Aphrodite actually falls in love with Adonis due to a curse from Zeus. See, Aphrodite was not just the goddess of love/desire, she was also the personification of it. So any time Zeus fell in love with anyone, which as you know was a lot of times, it was Aphrodite causing it/cursing him. To get even with her, he forced her to fall madly in love with not only a mortal man, but a mortal man who didn't even really love her back. Definitely interesting that in some stories falling in love was considered a curse.

There is another version to the boar chapter: Early all roses were white. (Important!). Aphrodite bragged so much about her new lover, that Zeus decided to pull a prank on her and send a boar after Adonis. He was killed by that boar and as Aphrodite heard him scream, she came down to earth again, just to find him dead. As she screamed and whined, she cut herself on a thorn of a rose. The blood, dripping from the cut, colored all roses around Adonis lifeless body red. That's why we give red roses as a symbol of love. :)

The version I heard the most is that both Persephone and Aphrodite fell in love with Adonis at the same time but fought about who could spend time with him. So as a compromise, he would spend a certain amount of months with each goddess and 1 month with who ever he chooses. When Adonis picked Aphrodite, Persephone was pissed and thought if she can't have him no one can so sent a wild boar to kill him when Aphrodite wasn't looking.

You forgot the best part of Adonis's Origins! Myrrha is the daughter of Galatea! The woman who was originally a statue that Aphrodite turned human to appease Pygmalion, her sculptor, to answer his prayer. Which means that Aphrodite brought his Grandmother to life, then cursed his mother into conceiving him through freaky ways, and then ultimately starts a love affair with what could essentially be considered her Great Grandson. Which is freaking wild!

She constantly insults a goddess despite being warned multiple times, and by said goddess herself, to stop. Arachne then makes a tapestry of Athena's family members having sex, despite it being common knowledge that Athena is one of the few goddesses to have taken a vow of virginity (she doesn't want to see her family, including her dad, having sex). Like what a dumb move. Then Arcahne herself feels bad for embarrassing her favourite god that she trys to kill herself, so Artemis is forced to turn her into a spider to save her life. One of the first versions I heard of this myth is when Aphrodite saw Adonis hunting in the woods one day with her young son Eros, and when Eros got jealous of Adonis, he accidentally shot an arrow at Aphrodite, making her fall in love with him, whereas previously she didn't really care for him. Then somehow Persephone got involved when Eros accidentally shot her with an arrow. Then Ares sent a boar after him to kill him since he used to be Adonis' lover and he was jealous of Aphrodite replacing him. Then that's what started the whole cluster in the Underworld of who Adonis got to be with. And to think in this version, none of this would have happened if Eros hadn't shot Aphrodite or Persephone. LOL But I did not know of Adonis' especially messed up origins, that's some straight up Electra complex right there! D: And yes, Aphrodite totally got her karma in the end; she had it coming, although Adonis did not. She deserved to lose him after what she did to his mother.

Definitely the easiest person to be punished was actually Myhrra’s MOTHER. She’s the one who (without realising her error) had put her daughter AND grandson in lots of danger in the first place. Metamorphoses is probably the least reliable source for Greek Myths. Most of his stories are basically him casting the Roman Gods (Hence why "Cupid" is used and not Eros) as capricious asshats. This is the same guy who made up the whole thing with Medusa getting raped, as opposed to her and her sisters (Who don't appear in Ovid's take) just being monsters originally, and Poseidon just banging one of the Gorgons. Odds are high that Aphrodite and Persephone were both into Adonis in the original myths

🚨*Spoiler Alert*🚨 Well you could probably find the book on Audible, the library or bookstore. It's also available as movies. The story itself is pretty simple. Dr. Jeckle is a good man and scientist. One night a wicked man named Hyde appears causing trouble and damages. The next day Jeckle comes by to pay for the damages. This keeps happening to the confusion of the people. Now towards the end of the book. Dr. Jeckle had been trying to separate the evil side from the good side of himself in hopes that he could do this to everyone. Then he would cleanse the world of the evil half of man. What he found was that one could not exist without the other. Hyde became increasingly evil because there was no good to keep him restrained. Also in order to get rid of Hyde he had to get rid of Jeckle. (Seriously, how can you be purely good if you kill?) So in order to restore the natural order Jeckle kills himself leaving a note that explains everything.

Great series Sir, I'm stuck watching it now. As a kid growing up in the Caribbean, there are tons of these tales told in school, word of mouth, etc. The one which comes to mind, several do, is about the animals travelling to the German town of Bremen. Is that one on your radar?

Totally didn't even make the connection that Aphrodite experienced heartbreak because of the curse she put on an innocent baby until you pointed it out, that's awesome! Also, the one where Persephone killed Adonis via the boar so she could keep him was the first version of the myth you heard, huh? Hey John, loving your Messed up Origins of Greek Myth.... I am surprised that you have not made a episode on the tragic story of Echo and Narcissus. Seeing how Narcissus is mentioned for just a short bit in the Disney's Hercules. I would love to see what history is found on that tragic story. As well perhaps see more about Eros's wife Psyche. I think these would make for great messed up origins.

For a moment I thought you wouldn't mention Persephone's involvement in Adoni's story. And when you did mention it I was reminded of the animated series Class of the Titans, which has an episode based on the Persephone-Adoni-Aphrodite myth. I highly recommend COTT to any Greek Mythology geek. It is really entertaining and fun. I don't know if you have already covered Thanatos and Hypnos.

In our synagogues we invoke the name of 'Adonai' every week, and when you look at Asteroth and his role as consort of Asherah, the connection to Adonis is pretty obvious. I love these crazy stories... And if anyone knows how Adonai became one of the names of god, lmk, I've never been able to figure out how that got worked in like that.
