Having spent over two years travelling in our DIY self converted campervan, we have been using these portable solar generators for quite sometime now.
We are often asked if they are a good solution for off grid power, especially for motorhomes that need to upgrade their electrical set up to spend more time off grid.
We've been asked a lot about the eco flow power stations and in particular what size to go for and which one is best, so, given the opportunity we tested one out!
We were also genuinely shocked what this brand agreed to let us do with it afterwards, especially as we didn't really want to make any more power bank reviews!
So hopefully, to all those taking for our opinion and if this is a viable solution, then this video covers that.
We always love hearing what you lot think in the comments so do let us know, and as always, thank you for watching!

We have used the kzbin.infoUgkxOTeIs0vv4_9B5hsmnLsk9r930uDQLu_Y for probably 30 hours with our camper and it’s been great! The noise level is really only noticeable when running the AC and other appliances like the microwave, hair dryer, or coffee pot. It’s not huge like other ones and it has wheels so even at 90lbs, I can move it!

@@campervibe The discount finished on 17th June - you put this video out on 17th around 6pm !! (well, according to utube). Not much time, or no time at all if you didn't pick this up until (like me) just after midnight on the 18th !! I think you have to tell these promoters that it takes a while to test something, then to get the video done, then not everybody is going to see it immediately . . . so the discount dates have to be realistic for them to get the influx of buyers that they are hoping for. I hope the company involved here reads these comnents ... 👍

Another great video! After doing my research, I opted for the Bluetti AC200MAX with additional battery. It also has a 100w USB-C, 2 X USB-A 18w and 2 standard USB. In addition, it has 2 X 15w wireless charging pads built in and 4 X 240v sockets. The performance is incredible and I’ve successfully run my air-con and my Alde heating/water. I use a matching Bluetti SP350 panel and have achieved 328w from it. There’s no denying these beasts are heavy. As someone who is definitely not an eco-warrior, it is wonderfully satisfying to even brew a pot of coffee and and make a sausage sandwich purely with the power of the sun. Yes, it’ll take a while to reach break-even but I’m cool with that.

Another excellent review. Very informative. In plain English. I’ve already bought the delta mini (1400W) which is perfect for my off grid workshop with solar panels to constantly recharge. Yes, they are expensive, especially with the solar panels, but you get what you pay for, so yes, would also definitely recommend as well. My only gripe is that the 3 pin power outlets are located on the other side to the display, but then I use the app to control them so not a major problem.

Great job Lou, you always give an excellent and honest opinion and that’s what I like. By the end of this year we will be spending more time off grid. I’ve watched countless reviews on the Max and it comes across as just what I’m looking for. We have a factory built conversion and I have no electrical expertise so this will make life a lot easier. I don’t want to keep moving it about in the van so will have to consider the location and the room to fit it. Thanks for sharing 👍Xx

Great review, but you didn't comment on one of the really helpful features of the Delta Max - the app that lets you control the unit, adjust various parameters, and in general see what's going on, all from your cell phone. If you have wifi, the app works on wifi. If you are in a remote location and don't have wifi, the Max generates its own limited range network and the app continues to work within a few hundred feet of the unit itself.

Found this a fantastic in depth , yet easily explained vid . One thing however , you said the unit has an 800W MPPT controller , but don’t put in anymore than 800W . An MPPT ( Maximum Power Point Tracker ) controller is a regulator of power in itself . You could rig this up to 10,000W of solar panels but you’ll never damage it or overload it as that what an MPPT controller does . When the battery is charged fully the unit will stop itself from taking a charge . Great if you use it year round as you can then “ over panel “ yourself for cloudy winter days
@campervibe

Hi there! Thank you 😀 and I get what you’re saying, however, manafacturer suggests no more than 800 watts. As you’d void the warranty if anything went wrong I wouldn’t want to reccomend to anyone to do more. Just in case. Hope that makes sense. 😀😀

Personally I bought a Bluetti ac200p , but that was a while ago now when they first come out . If this Ecoflow was on the market then I think there’s a good chance I would have bought this instead . This has a slightly larger MPPT controller , a slightly bigger inverter , and 4 240V plugs rather than 2 . They’re the biggest takes I see on this for anyone interested in comparing the two .

Lou thanks for great content as always. You are quite right to point out everyone is different as is their individual power needs. I also agree that factory built motorhomes may not have high capacity power supply systems once away from a mains 230v supply. However it comes down to the individuals needs and what they want to power. I have a factory built MH and enjoy off grid perfectly well with the as fitted system. I don't have a coffee machine or lots of gadgets to charge up but cope perfectly well charging my phone a blue tooth speaker and a few camera batteries etc whilst off grid. A factory MH may have less power than yours and other self builders but it's not right to say factory MH systems are Sh1t! It's horses for courses and for many people they maybe absolutely adequate. U tube creators like you may have lots of power needs that a factory system is not going to satisfy and of course people like Mr Radford who want to run his A/C all night a factory system is never going to manage. I think you just need to be mindful before criticising factory set ups that for some people they are perfectly adequate myself included who spends very little time on campsites. Vantastic adventures acknowledged this point recently in one of their videos by encouraging people to test the factory system before spending vast amounts of money on upgrades. Bigger is not always better!!! Batteries girl batteries focus!!!😂 Keep up the good work Paul
@campervibe
@campervibe 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Paul, you’re right, if you don’t have great power needs then the factory built system is fine. However, I’d argue that for what your paying for a motorhome, the quality of install and cheap parts often used then it’s nowhere near value for money at all. One of the things we get all the time from our subscribers is that the motorhomes won’t do 2 days and one night if the fridge is on and the truma runs, even if only briefly. I think with the cost now for a motorhome you should at least be getting more than the standard 100ah leisure battery and 120 watt panel. There’s often not even a b2b. Manafacturers seem to be putting the prices up rapidly yet not increasing the quality to reflect that. This is just my opinion obviously and appreciate why you may have been offended. It’s ok, the engine in mine is shit, so they’ve all got their faults! 😂🤣

@@campervibe that's my opinion too, the builders seem to keep track of what's in fashion & just chuck in whatever packet that is without any consideration of design or potential use, wiring sometimes trailing around in the backs of cupboards, it was single-fuse "Zig units" for years, you could go into a 10 foot single-berth caravan or a 25 foot six-berth motorhome & find exactly the same Zig unit with the same battery, often uncovered in the middle of a locker & with no vent.

Pro and cons to both ways of doing it. A built in system is easier to upgrade or replace a faulty component, they do however take up more space and are time consuming to install. These all in ones are convenient and portable, and can come with you when you change vehicle, but one tiny component breaking could bring your whole system down.

I "know" electrics (not officially qualified) I wouldn't hesitate to install this in a build from scratch van, or to upgrade. I'd go as far as to suggest maybe a second, smaller one as a backup as well? Then, rather than too much solar on the roof, a couple of the portable panels. The advantage of those? Let's say you have a roof rack and it's winter. Face one side of the van towards the (low) sun, hang the panels on the side using some form of loop from the rack. You max out the panels because they directly face the sun..... and if it snows, no cleaning required. You could even hang them vertically (short end at the top).

I know this is a paid advertisement, but you were honest and harsh, and made a good rewiew. I know how to wire my camper, I have done solar before and I own both a generator and a big pure sine inverter, and I still wonder if this is not the way to go, I can bring it inside when I park my camper for the winter and keep it charged and have as a backup if the grid goes down, I can bring it to worksites and so on.

The best thing is that when you change van the unit can come with you. My main worry is that the battery only lasts about 800 cycles and doesn’t appear to be replaceable. This doesn’t compare well to your van battery lifespan.
@Jabber-ig3iw
@Jabber-ig3iw 2 жыл бұрын
After 800 cycles it will have 80% capacity, it will still work after 800 cycles, it will just have a 1600wh capacity rather than 2000wh capacity. That’s full 100% discharge cycles, in reality something else will break long before you get near 800+ cycles, probably some tiny component, or the inverter if you use it a lot. That’s the big disadvantage of all of these solar generators, one tiny component can bring down the whole thing, on a built in system it’s easy to replace a broken component.

Would it be possible to run an inverter from the vehicle battery when driving and charge the eco flow from that ? If you had a 500 watt inverter surely that that would charge it quicker than the 120 watts you get from the accessory socket, my knowledge of vehicle electrics is rudimentary but sounds feasible to me, any comments most welcome 👍🏻🇬🇧

I am really glad you made this review Lou, as you answered all the questions I had about the max which we are getting, would you say with normal use laptop phone Wi-Fi cameras etc it would last 4 days, which is probably how many off grid days per week we require. Thanks again….

No worries! 😀 those things you’ve listed are all pretty low powered items so I would say yes, especially if you get a solar panel for it too. But even without it should be fine. The laptop will be the biggest user of power, and they can vary a lot, Emily’s draws 45 watts and my previous one was 130 watts, keep an eye on the power draw from yours and obviously it will depend how long you’re on it. Hope that makes sense! 😀

These [generators ] are great and your discription is superb as usual but a lot of vanlifers cannot afford them and it maybe sticks in the throat when others get them free ok if you make a vid about them.

The power packs are great yes But it still needs a system to hook up to so all the wiring lights And everything els still needs to be done so you now have the 2000 pounds bill for power pack for plus the 1500 pounds is bill to fit out your van with electrics to accommodate the power pack
@voyageadventurevans
@voyageadventurevans 2 жыл бұрын
Totally agree. As a back up, a small power pack could be useful, but realistically if your building a van, you need an electrical system. As a pack to take in a day van or tent for a few days then yes. But that said we do tend to build vans that are pretty well built for off grid camping, so I may be biased. On the plus side...nice review Lou...and for giving it to someone 👍...very generous.

Hi guys, I’ve seen several van builds now (smaller vans) that are using this to run all lights, water pump, sockets etc so it’s definitely doable. It drastically reduces components and cables as you don’t have individual mppt, mains charger, battery cables and all the relevant fuses etc etc. I do say in my review that I’d still be inclined though to install a full system, but then we are travelling for extended periods of time. It all depends on your needs I think. I had the time to put in installing my own system, for someone that works all week and wants to get away at weekends rather than learn and install electrics this may be a better option. Thanks for the comments guys 😀😀

Hi lou, am awaiting delivery of my small ecoflow generator. Question for you looking at folding solar panels, when you tested the solar panels who's was the cheap one. I'm in a Peugeot partner, so was looking at a small folding panel from Allpower.its on amazon at £180 about for 100w. Hope all going well. XxAnita

Ok I have come back Lou and I need to ask you this question. I need a solar generator that is not too heavy but could power a 1.5 kW micathermic heater in the cold weather in a tow caravan in New Zealand. I would not be so particular but due to health conditions I need to keep really warm in cold weather and admittedly I have used a powered site for some time but I don't like the blow air type heaters in the caravans and I wanted a solar generator that is portable that could power a micathermic heater in the colder months and I do have solar panels on the roof for little things and that but my main concern is one that will run a heater and possibly microwave toaster and things periodically. Obviously I have a gas heater as well but I don't like that. Not sure if you could point me in the right direction but to be honest I've been meaning to ask you for a long time and I wouldn't really trust anybody else with advice for this with all due respect I've watched your channel for some time and trust your reviews implicitly. But anyway maybe there isn't one that can output such large devices but I thought I would ask anyway. Thanks Lou have a fantastic week ahead.

Hello! Unfortunately for what you want to run you won’t be able to do it with any of these solar generators. 1.5kw is a lot of power and will drain the power pack very very quickly and any solar just won’t be able to keep up I’m afraid. Sorry I can’t be of more help but I wouldn’t want you to buy something that just isn’t fit for the purpose you want. A diesel heater would probably be a better option for you but that is blown air as well.

Could this be permanently installed into your van as the permanent electrical system & hidden out the way? I’m thinking things like how would permanent lights fittings work with it? And is there a way to have wall plug sockets which connect to it (if I was to have it hidden under a seat for example?) rather than the need to plug direct into the unit? Forgive me for my daft questions my electrical knowledge spans to ‘have to tried turning it on and off’

Great video. If possible wait for new ECO flows or go for top of the range Delta Max Pro if you have a big enough wallet as the battery life cycles are much longer in the lithium iron phosphate batteries.

Forgive me if someone else has made a similar comment, I looked at a lot! This off the shelf product is great, your review seemed fair and honest and perhaps was on the premise you would be adding it to an existing factory system. My problem with these power packs is everything has to be plugged into that box. What about hard wired LED lights, Sirocco fans and USB outlets where you want them to be not where the box is? Eg: I want my phone here by me where I am not over there where the box is. For a weekender you probably get away with it but if you want outlets where it suits you and other hard wired appliances it won't work.
@sroberts605
@sroberts605 2 жыл бұрын
Presumably if you had those requirements (who wouldn't?) there'd be a place in the van to put the unit and plug in things like lights etc into the 3-pin sockets - ie you'd still wire in circuits to various other places but all the gubbins is in the one box and portable.

I bought the Delta a while back from Leroy merlin and it went on the fritz just 15 days after purchase. Leroy Merlin told me they would send it back to Ecoflow for repair which was a complete lie as Ecoflow don't even have a service point on Tenerife where we live. Luckily we ended up being offered a refund. It made me really think about what I need, where I will get it from and more importantly, what recourse do I have if it goes wrong. Looks like a good bit of kit but the inverter draws a lot of power and the Ecoflow is not the most efficient. Sorry but they also put NCM cells in the Delta max which is a fire risk which os one of the main reasoins I am grateful mine went on the fritz as I am now looking at Bluetti.

It's an ok power station. But now outdated. I have watched many, many of your enjoyable videos and followed many of your journeys. And I am in the middle of rebuilding a camper. But after watching many hours on YT setting everything up, solar, batteries, MTTP's etc. I think power stations are more advanced than they were 2 years ago and even now more so. I will be going for the Bluetti 200L. Now those that like the full set-up and the work that comes with it and those that like the power station idea. BOTH will still have the job of wiring all of their 12v lights and any other electrics they want to have. But having a power station will be a lot easier with the 24v system as you just need to plug an extension cord in and unit to your kitchen. The same where ever you need them. They also have extra batteries so that you can just connect their plug n play batteries in and add one, two or even three of them together. And the AC charger will fully charge this 2400w 80% in just 45 minutes as well has a max of 1200w of solar input to any solar panel with the mc4 connecter as well has a 12v cig charger (slow. But it works on the go). And this new one has NO AC power brick to carry around. Just a normal AC power cord to go from wall to unit! And the LED display show's you what power you have coming in from DC or AC and what is going out as well has both the WiFi and bluetooth app giving more info. This one in my view is the one to get. But we all have our fav's! But the best for me and other van livers is that you can have BOTH your 12v and 24v cables running in your van at the same time! And multi change! Change from your solar at the same time from your AC while you are changing your devices at the same time (not many can do that)!!

I have the delta Max with 2 spare batteries, I use wifi router in RV, SIM from ais Ipad, ok I adjust the speed of charging , I have a dual battery truck system with 2,000 watt inverter to charge ac side charging adjust down to 1000 watt or lower depending how far I drive. also I use Solar Charging. With Dual battery I have 4 12 volt parallel connected at 300 AH to run inverter , in 2-3 hours charge all 3 batteries from 50 %/60 % . Now charging 12 volt through Solar connecter it will change from solar to Car charger sign. it does work but 120 watt input . (do not use cig lighter . Now I have also hooked up 400 watt Echo Flow solar panel , charging same time my dual battery invert working , yep works good .
