Cows free grazing is as natures designed. Rotating sections and each sections gets a rest is also as nature intended. We long ago rented a farm house and later found out several hundreds of new baby veal calves were stuffed inside. In the dark up to their belly in muck never getting to graze, feel the sun or rain and never getting to run. A huge truck would come every 4 months drive the babies into it truck leaves and tractor comes to bulldoze all the muck and some bodies that had died in it. Then a new load comes. They don’t regard them as living being but just as cash numbers. It’s so sad. And there was fields of grass several hundred acres all around but they were not allowed to enjoy it in their short little lives. I wonder if people who buy and enjoy veal even know where it comes from.

Gee whiz! Call it whatever you want, but you are describing rotational grazing, a practice my family has been using for the better part of 400 years on both sides of the Pond. We also were "mixed" farmers. Growing cash crops, our own winter feed for various livestock with no animal raised without full benefit. That means you raise the animals, breed them, use the composted manure for fertilizer and either eat them or sell them to market for additional cash flow. And voila! A fully Sustainable farm!
@theboringchannel2027Күн бұрын

@@theboringchannel2027 No herbicides, pesticides nor hormones and major equipment was either rented or shared with neighbours in a co-op-style arrangement. But that was back when your neighbours were close, trusted friends and you did not hesitate to work "in kind" during planting and harvesting. We combined for our neighbours, one would disc, another plant. Our farm was not a 10K acre, monoculture corporate farm. It was a mixed FAMILY farm of a manageable 3× 1/4-section farm. I still use the tractor I used as a lad! Why replace what still works well and is cheap to fix with the modern stuff with that proprietary electronic junk that is designed to keep you broken down and in debt. New ways are not necessarily better, just new!

In the UK my experience is that where the animals are raised solely for beef, the back half goes to butchers and supermarkets for the steak and joints and the front half goes to places like McDonalds or for mince. So it is not that McDonalds don’t get any meat from good animals, it’s just they get the poorer cuts from them. I am sure they do get a lot from poorer quality animals too depending on need.
@janofb5 күн бұрын
Awww, this seems so obvious! But ignores reality. To do this each cow needs between 1 acre of quality land and up to 50 acres of western rangeland. We're currently at 87.2 million cattle. This is the lowest inventory since 1951, even though our population is more than twice what the population was then. There are 528 million acres suitable for grazing. 45% of cows are currently in rangeland and we'll call it 25 acres per cow. 45% x 87.2 million = 39.24 million cows. X 25 acres per cow = 981 million acres. So just the 45% of cows currently utilizing rangeland requires more than double the amount of available rangeland. They can do this because they're only on the range part time. So we don't have enough rangeland to even support the 45% of cows that are already on it. Where exactly will this utopia for cows happen? In fantasy land.

Cattle in feed lots still have to eat. So instead of growing corn year after year, which is a high yield crop, but not exactly good for the soil, you could rotate crops and use part of that land to grow grass and use for grazing. It helps to regenerate the soil . Less industrialized farming may need a little more land, but it also produces better food and is less harmful for the environment.

Raising cattle and feeding them in this manor does reduce the amount of other hydrocarbon inputs that would otherwise be used so that is a plus and because the cattle move around more, have more space and don't spend as much time wallowing in their own shit, they are healthier.
