Vietnam's Toxic Legacy: This episode investigates claims by doctors in Vietnam who believe that agent orange is causing life threatening health problems for a whole new generation of children. The toxic herbicide was dropped on Vietnam by US forces during the war over 40 years ago.

@@TheAstroflight The midwife that was in charge of my mothers pregnancy with me was sued for negligence, had her practicing licence removed and was made to pay compensation to my family for her actions which caused life threatening illness to my mother a I. I have also been through another case of suing that I'm not going to discuss openly on the internet, perhaps laws have changed, or there are separate laws that I am unaware of. None of your original comment offended me by the way, however telling someone to leap of a building is pretty nasty and taints the point you are making. This has made me want to take a deeper look into our countries laws and have a look at the information available on some of the cases you mentioned that i haven't heard about.

It’s crazy that the USA denies the Vietnamese for such obvious trauma. I just found out that I was adopted from one of the most polluted areas of agent orange in Vietnam… and a lot of my ailments and issues are similar to these children. When Diep said “I'm exhausted, I wanted to come home because I miss my brother and my grandparents” made me cry so much because that is exactly what happened with my brother “he requested to come back home, and as soon as he got home he said “I'm exhausted! I want to see your pretty face before I go” At first I thought he meant that he wanted to see me before he goes back to the hospital but 3 days later when he passed that's when I realized that he meant “before I die” 💔 my prayers are with Diep’s family, especially his brother.🙏

Many things that happened over seas were never included in our history lessons at school, be it then and even now. Count on the government to never truly admit how they royally fucked up. It pisses me off just hearing stories like this. Take the Red Cross blood scandal. It affected the US, Canada and Even the UK. I'm sure that scandal reached other countries too. My blood was tested as a kid and fortunately I never received tainted blood. But it's still disgusting that it's not included as a part of history.

Such a painful and horrific doc. I love the reporter, he's so compassionate and personable. My grandfather lost his faith in the government because of agent orange and being told to bomb poor villages full of women and children. He was poisoned with agent orange and has had cancer on and off since along with lung issues. He never talks about that time in his life, I think he feels so betrayed and guilty for his part.

They did it to our people too. I'm American and my husbands father was in that was when he was 17 or 16. Too young to know. He was damaged the rest of his life. He lived until 65 suffering. He never got to see his grandchildren. Some others weren't so lucky and died much faster. The government did this to them too. They knew the risks. I also work in the same environment. However, unless the people you interact with are rich, 45 million Americans are below the poverty line, we have one of the worst and most expensive health care systems in the world, and for people that try to live a better life through education become flooded with debt etc. etc. Or don't even try to better themselves through education because of the debt. Maybe it's because our government doesn't give a shit about us, so people feel powerless and are trying their best. I had a woman yell at me because she didn't understand why her EBT card (i.e. food stamps) wouldn't work, but later apologized. And I have people come in who get so wound up over coupons because they're struggling to get by and feed their families. Our media is full of propaganda, our government continuously takes out funding for our education system, and our health is gradually declining because most people can't afford healthy food but cheap/shitty garbage. Maybe take that into consideration. Yes, it would be great if we all were patient and understanding, but you have to try to understand the struggle that other people are going through.

my late husband was a Vietnam veteran who was exposed to agent orange. I believe it caused some birth defects in several of our children, though not as extreme as the children of Vietnam. One of our daughters has deformities of her thumbs and feet also has aspergers syndrome and a development problem of her palate. she's grown up adjusting to her disabilities. We had her palate fixed when she was younger, she's now grown and a full time university student with a husband and a full time job. Our son has severe flat feet and he's always had trouble with his bones breaking growing up, another of our daughters has a chemical balance in her brain that causes her hyper activity, she has trouble sitting still and is constantly in motion even when she sleeps. My husband was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2009, he had tumors in his back and stomach he would tell me about being exposed to agent orange during the war and how it was impossible to keep from the exposure. He passed away in 2010 at the age of 69 he was 20yrs my senior we raised a beautiful family. I do have a fear our grand children may be born with birth defects. It's a horrible issue the people of Vietnam have to live with, no parent expects such deformities happening to their children it's heartbreaking! I believe the US government AND the chemical company should continue to find the cleanup regardless of how many years it takes, these people are essentially poisoned from their soil, water, animals etc. And have no choice but to eat from their land and drink contaminated water. It's almost as if the war has not ended for these innocent people. God bless them!

I lived in Vietnam, specifically in Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City) only 2 years ago. I saw lot of families and children with similar disabilities as shown here in the video and always thought it must be something to do with agent orange, although I'm sure not all will of been connected to it, I always used to stop and give them some money if they needed it or some food or anything to just help a little bit. The thing that stuck with me so much was how a lot of people would try to not accept any help. They were always so friendly and lovely. It breaks my heart that those people are suffering due to a war completely out of their control and sadly these effects will be felt for generations to come 😢

Diep's story hurt me. He already known that he not gonna make it so he come back home to spend the left time with his family and save the money for his parents. In the hospital, what's he said mean:" It's hurt too much. Somebody please help me. If it's continue hurt like this the only way is to suicide." If you don't understand Vietnamese and you find no tears on their faces, it's because they're dry out. Their voices to me sound so painful that I got goosebumps. I'm a Vietnamese, I have 2 cousins died because they're born affected by the dioxin. My uncle and aunt known that because the dioxin, they will never be brave enough to born another child, the government also advise them to not having another child. So they adopted 2 boys also affected by dioxin. The farmers in Vietnam is really poor, even if they have good soils and working 14 hours a day, they still can only make around 50 thousands dong a day, it's almost reach 2 USD and they need to use that money for their kids and elders.

The compassion this man has really moved me. He is such a rad guy & he carried the interviews with such respect. The way he comforted the lady talking in the hospital about her son with a simple hand on the shoulder really made me realize. This man is trying to make us realize the impact of the aftermath of agent orange. The way he treated the lady got across that shes not just a face on the screen. My grandfather recently passed away from affects of agent orange. He was a doctor for troops but he used to travel to help the Vietnamese civilians who were hurt and sick. He help women who gave birth to conjoined twins, had been effected by agent orange or anybody who just needed help. He was probably the most selfless man I ever met and I miss him. 💖💖

My papa, who passed away years ago, was in the war when then the US used agent orange to kill the plants in the Vietnam. He was one of the soldiers still in the targeted area when they used agent orange. He had an issue breathing after that, and had to have a trache, and would make a loud pop sound when he changed from inhale to exhale and vice versa. I was very young then and I didn’t understand it; it scared me and my siblings, so he would often stay in his workshop in the basement when we visited my nana; as to not scare us. Now that I’m older I can only feel immense guilt for being scared of him. My dad said he cried on his deathbed over never getting to know his grandkids because we were so scared of him.

I went to Vietnam in 2016, the Capital was filled with small deformed children, all clearly affected by the Agent Orange. In this grim reality I also saw the Vietnamese people genuinely taking care of eachother. I never saw people begging or sleeping outside. The spirit of Vietnam has endured colonialism from the French to the Vietnam war and the following aftermath that haunts them today. They are strong despite all of this. The shame lies in the US government not paying for their war crimes against the Vietnamese or the American soldiers that were also affected by Agent Orange. The brutal irony is that the US lost the war despite their horrendous attacks, yet the toxins makes Vietnam suffer and therefore they cannot feel the freedom of victory. I plan to return to Vietnam on day, I never felt such real ness and genuine humanity as I did there.

My girlfriend lives in Viet Nam, I agree the comment you replied to is a real exaggeration. Bordering Cambodia has suffered far more from the war, I saw hundreds of landmine victims of all ages. I personally haven't seen any 'small deformed children' during the extensive time I've spent all over Viet Nam. In truth the Vietnamese are a mixed bunch - same as people from any country, money and family are priorities for most. Now much of the low quality food China exports to Viet Nam is damaging the health of the population, they use MSG far too much which is a big concern. May not sound as dramatic as 'agent orange' but it's been shown to be extremely unhealthy to humans.

It truly is sad though you’ve seen nothing, during and after the Khmer Rouge, Vietnam was in so much danger. The Khmer invaded and killed so many innocent people, they skewered entire families and horribly mutilated innocents, they did not stop until the soil was red with blood and corpses littered the ground. After that invasion the Vietnamese government sent a million troops to retake land and push the Khmer out of Vietnam. The Khmer didn’t go easily though, they set many land mines and traps in order to further mutilate the people, they didn’t aim to kill. They aimed to maim because they thought that would slow the oncoming army. Thankfully Khmer Rouge was removed from power in 1979 when Vietnam invaded and destroyed the majority of their troops.

I guess the idea was that the USA was involved in Vietnam for the wrong reasons. The US was busy trying to prevent communism from spreading while Russia and the other communist powers were supporting Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia. The US faked their way into the war (Gulf of Tonkin) and then essentially napalmed the entire rain forest while raping and killing innocent non combatants. Too much went on in Vietnam, the US was definitely to blame for many atrocities. These are acts of terror, in normal wars unarmed civilians are not meant to be massacred and raped.

I love how the kids at least have a "big brother" who checks up on them and interacts with them. The baby with the cleft lip/palate and skull deformity is still a baby like any other, you can see from her smile. She's lucky to have a doctor around like the one she has. You can tell me that im brain washed but in my perspective as a Vietnamese, we are taught a lot of things about history as we came across many wars and eventually got our independence. We have musems full of evidence about every wars and it is hurtful to see those. The US made us look like the bad guys and them being in Vietnam as a help, an ideal mission to save us from communism. They by now still use the media propoganda to manipulate and rewrite the history on the war. Say whatever you want but Vietnam only fought for our independence, no lives were supposed to be taken. It's sad that US history classes teach u guys another version of it or maybe not much of it (since they aren't proud of it). But being a Vietnamese and learnt a lot about our history and the sacrifices, i'm heartbreaking to see westerners talk bad things about us as we were the bad guys and compare our former government with terrorists. the Geneva Accords of 1954, which were aimed at resolving the conflict in Vietnam. As part of these accords, it was agreed that Vietnam would be temporarily divided along the 17th parallel, with the North controlled by the communist forces led by Ho Chi Minh and the South controlled by the anti-communist forces led by President Ngo Dinh Diem. The accords also stipulated that there would be a nationwide election in 1956 to reunify the country under a single government. However, this election never took place. The United States and the government of South Vietnam, led by President Diem, were concerned that if the election happened, Ho Chi Minh and the communists would likely win, given Ho Chi Minh's popularity in the country. As a result, the election was not held, and the division between North and South Vietnam became more permanent. This contributed to the escalation of tensions and eventually led to the Vietnam War.

The kill counts on US side were highly inflated due to many factors as the kill and search tactics which relies on soldiers and officers reporting those kds, the nature of the war, the killing of civilians to produce higher body count ratio AND FINALLY the fact it was mainly north vs south vietnamese, south vietnamese and north were thecmain ones killing each other and you can't distinguish the dead bodies among north or south since they are the same people. Americans were really bad at killing north vietnamese, what they do is simply calling the times they won a "major battle" while the times they lost are unexistant and not considered a major battle.

Connor Richardson Communism may have been horrible and evil, but the aim of the North was to unify Vietnam. And even if that attempt had the intention to stop evil, look at what the “good” side did. The My Lai massacre was a brutal slaughter. American troops could not communicate with the villagers. The soldiers didn’t take any chance to have mercy. They bombed the homes of the villagers. Some soldiers sexually assaulted the women. An innocent boy was also shot. The Lieutenant that ordered the massacre told the soldiers: Come on, we'll line them up. Helicopter pilot Hugh Thompson threatened to shoot his own men if they continued, and saved some. He was shunned by his fellow soldiers. The massacre was hidden from the world in fear of being arrested or prosecuted, since they committed a war crime. When it was revealed to the world, Americans were absolutely disgusted, only adding to their hate of the Vietnam War. This was not the only horrible thing the Americans had done in Vietnam. I am not saying that the Americans were the only brutal killers during the war. The Việt Cong used a lot of brutal tactics too, and they did an execution of their own in Huế. The Việt Cong killed as the Americans. But neither side is really the knight in shining armor, yet America is seen as such.

This is actually brought up in the video. Since they had continuous exposure. If the gov didn't feel at fault, then they wouldn't be paying. Although I believe the company that made it should be the one footing the bill. They were the ones to convince the American soldiers that it was safe. So US soldiers were affected as well. Those soldiers had higher rates of cancer and heart issues.

I know of this. My neighbor went to Vietnam. He lost his best friend there, agent orange was spilled on his arm ( they told him it was diesel fuel), and came home to the U.S. just to be spat on and yelled at. He was so disappointed. The Scientific Community DOES NOT, I repeat, *does not* know whether the dangerous dioxin is in the product that Monsanto is using, or what parts of the corn plant it might be in. There is NO PROOF that these products are safe, save only that no illness has been traced to the compound yet. If you are forced to buy these products by a program such as food stamps: please contact the ACLU immediately. This is all HIGHLY ILLEGAL, but the FDA has chosen to overlook it. The reporter is really great. I love the way he approaches each family and makes them feel comfortable about having these conversations so much that they invite him into their home. Thank you for sharing this with us. I also appreciate them showing the children's hospital. I've seen this hospital a few times in other documentaries. I hope to one day donate my time to help these beautiful children. I'm glad Loy is also helping these children. I saw what he was doing for one of the children that has scaly skin and it gave him relief to be in the pool.
