Lifting the aircraft with tow truck is lot quicker and safer, where as old tow bar push back was time consuming and many times getting the pin right was work of art. Loads of international airports around the globe are adapting to lifting the nose wheel for push backs.

Not every system works like the shown one but this one is used more often because you can maneuver the aircraft easier than with alternative systems.

Generally there are two different ways: Conventional (with a towbar) and towbar-less. This video was towbar-less which is a similar concept to towing a trailer in terms of turning (initial turn towards the direction you want the nose facing), and they lift the nose gear with the tug itself. The conventional method (at least where I am from) is using a tow bar to turn the nose gear on the wheels on the ground, which is a similar concept to towing a double trailer in that your initial turn is the direction you want the tail facing and then you follow it around essentially. Each method has their ups and downs for sure, aircraft type dependant but both are highly effective in their own regard

Great view from the eyes of ground crews. In the video description, you stated that the registration is unknown, but the video shows the letters 'LG' on the front gear, thus, the registration is A7-ALG.

Fascinating. The older system grabbed the oleo leg with a collar and turned the nose gear with a kind of lever so the tug turned the gear which turned the aircraft. This system prevents damage with the wheels off the ground entirely. Good stuff.

the "LG" is the last two letters (or numbers if applicable) of the aircraft registration (this aircraft was A7-ALG). The red painted part with "No Tow" inscribed means that when performing pushback or towing operations, the nose gear cannot turn that in terms of angle without inflicting damage on the gear itself.

That's a common procedure AFAIK. Only one engine is being started at the same time as it consumes a lot of energy.

Although not "insane," I didn't know the Schleppers actually lift the wheel. We don't have this style of machine in America. Not that I've seen anyway. Of course, I mainly fly commuter planes like the 737 - so it is unnecessary. Cool video.

Because there are a lot of people, vehicles and cargo around, if you'd use the engines to back out you'd blast everything away... Some airports are so densly cluttered, you are even towed into the position, LAX for instance...
