They actually played this exact rendition at my IU graduation during the recessional. Not just the standalone fight song, the entire "Viking March" arrangement. It was awesome.

They do it every year! I always played in the commencement band when I went to IU and this march was a lot of the band's favorite part of the ceremony.

@@Finetales I played in Commencement Band one year ('02 or '03, I think) and even as a music ed major, I wasn't familiar with this march. At the first rehearsal, Mr. Pratt asked us to get it out to sight read, but didn't say anything. We got through the first section no problem - "this is nice, not too hard... Fun little piece" I thought, and he smirked a little as we neared the end of the first section. Something seemed vaguely familiar about some of the rhythms I was hearing in the low brass, but I hadn't put it together yet. Then the Trio hit. I laughed out loud for a few measures before joining back in. You could tell he enjoyed seeing our faces as it dawned on us.

In Texas, especially East - east of I-45... this is a popular march that many high school bands march to - in 6-to-5 military style The smaller bands play the trio as a dynamic contrast... & they often do that with many King marches

I wonder how often people stand up and clap along when this is played at high schools and middle schools in Indiana.

This music gets me every time in the basketball court.

I don’t think middle school bands can play this at tempo. Most high school bands won’t play it well. Imho.

I had no idea that this is where the IU fight song came from. GO IU... FIGHT... FIGHT... FIGHT!

Reminds me of all the times in Indiana University’s Marching Hundred when we were called to play the trio to Karl King’s “Viking March”. Always thought we were the Hoosiers instead of the Vikings but for some reason in the moment, it didn’t bother me very much.

Loved King marches when I was in HS. Viking, Invictus, Cypress the Grape, then some dancy number for the drill team and twirlers, then Strategic Air Command, and flank into the press box with the finale from The Sinfonians. The townsfolk seemed to like it. Of course, they were our parents. What choice did they have? Despised the white shoes, though. (Haven't thought about this stuff in decades...)
