The dialog is awful and It's as if Shyamalan has never heard another human being talk before. Almost all of Bryce Dallas Howard's lines are either confusing or unintentionally hilarious because of how poorly written they are. It's as if Shyamalan is incapable of coming up with anything resembling a natural conversation between his characters, instead opting for long-winded and awkward monologues that ultimately have nothing to do with the plot. It's a terrible movie.

They filmed all these practical effects for the alien, and then the studio forced them to replace it with 1992 era CGI. Ripley only agreed to do it if there were no guns, and she got to die at the end. Killing Hicks and Newt was obviously a point of contention. But it had some good stuff, too. The set pieces were great. Also, a decommissioned prison colony where the inmates were all XYY chromosome S.O.'s is a kind of grim setting for a movie with a female protagonist, but of course Ripley isn't afraid of people anymore. The soundtrack was great, I bought the tape when the movie came out. Also, it had Charles Dance and a bunch of great actors. Charles S Dutton from Roc. Pete Postlethwaite. More importantly, as a teacher, Hurt's character knew those same stories and they built on that to establish this place of "safety" for them and their families. Is that aspect of the premise kind of bonkers, perhaps, and yet for the story and how they've maintained the refuge of The Village it's brilliant. Cheers!

People shit on this movie a lot. For me, this is a really underrated movie with a good twist that was completely unexpected. That speech William Hurt gave when he was telling all the elders that he told Bryce’s character that she could go to town, is one of my favorite movie speeches of all time. Great film. Edit: I don’t think she noticed that the name of the preserve was Walker, which is Ivy’s surname. It was her family’s land that her father was paying to not fly over and to keep people out.

This movie is very metaphorical. This group of grieving people were all confronted with evil, and they thought that through their experiences, they understood where evil comes from: From civilization and money and greed. And so they thought, "If we simply make our own place, away from civilization and money and greed, we will not have to deal with evil anymore." Unfortunately, it turns out that their idea was misguided; even in their closed-off society, there was still evil, because (as the movie explains it) evil doesn't come from something outside of humans, it comes from humans themselves: from evil desires, from mental illness, from lies, from things that you cannot escape, as long as there are still people. Dealing with evil turns out to be complicated and defies any simple solution. At least that's what I got from it. Unfortunately, the "shape" of the story doesn't really fit into the traditional shape we expect of movies, seeing as there's a sort of relaxing of tension more at the like 70% mark than at the end. That, and the audience not liking that they had a trick played on them (believing it was set in the late 1800s rather than modern day) made it relatively unpopular with critics.
@johnnyskinwalker4095Ай бұрын
I still believe that it's near the ideal society that they created. It's a more happy place than what we have with wars, greed, jealousy and so forth. Sure Evil can arise but most of the time, it's absent. Maybe by creating these monsters, they put fear in people and this allowed them to behave or not look for trouble.

The 1st time I saw The Village the electric lights in the glass house near the beginning made me wonder but all the performances were so good I just let it flow. This cast is outrageously stacked. The best part is that the mentally ill "kid" pretending to be a monster gives them the opportunity to continue the charade. Night doesn't make horror movies he makes dissertations on fear.

"...She's never seen a car before..." She's not seeing it now, she only heard it. It probably freaked her out, but after what she's already been through she just took it in stride. This is an unusual idea, a monster movie without any actual monsters. It reminds me of a Twilight Zone or Star Trek episode. The village Elders have been so traumatized by grief that they fled from society, and created an elaborate fantasy to keep their children away from it. But they didn't think about the long term consequences. The children are paranoid and suspicious, and even the smartest of them are ignorant of the greater world. They can survive only as long as they stay in the village, which can only support a limited number of people. What will the next generation do, or the one after that ? (if there is one)

They went out there and lived like that to avoid crime and violence. And what happened to Lucius was criminal violence. But the sick child from the beginning that had died. That could be seen as God's will that they were willing to accept. Overall, good movie. Really suspenseful.

This is a seriously underrated movie. Joaquin Phoenix and Bryce Dallas Howard are just so good is this, and M. Night does a really good just at building up and holding the tension, and scares us so much by showing us very little...but just enough. Less = more when we are given enough to fill in the blanks with our imaginations. I also really love the scenes of how they recognize and express their love for each other. When he complains about how she always leads when he wants to lead, and then pours his heart out about how he can't stop thinking about her. So wonderfully romantic in an unconventional way.

I love the premise of the elders, wanting to pretty much create an honest and good world. A World without sin or evil so to speak. Yet when you look at this, when you look at the elders and the world they created. If you pay attention, almost every deadly sin has worked its way into their supposed perfect Community. Almost every one. Wrath, Pride, vanity, lust, envy, they’re almost all there. Those sins have worked their way into their community without any external forces influencing them at all.
