It’s 70s-early 80s punk rock. Nirvana was nothing original, they just structured some of their songs more melodically, which were more palatable for commercial radio. Check out other Seattle bands like Melvins and Mudhoney etc. Personally I preferred Nirvana because some of their songs hit the spot and mixed up the tempo, as well as thought out lyrics in at least some of their songs.
