I love them, seeing the video for "Ride" was such a breathe of fresh air. I compare them to blind melon, not in sound but in the time they came out. The 2000s sucked music wise, the NYC scene was cool with interpol and the strokes, the yeah yeah yeahs. But the vines came and they had that 90s feel to them. Unlike the other "post grunge" they didnt TRY to be like others. But due to them being good Emo came around. And we all know what happend....... Blind melon came out during pearl jam,AIC, nirvana etc. But blind melon took rural rock and hard rock and was incredible. But was over looked due to them being like Pearl Jam Why, because they had 5 people

This comment section is making me feel like I’m not alone with feeling emotional listening to this! Like many of you, I was a teenager listening to this song alone in the dark in my bedroom, trying to make sense of the world around me and what the future held before me. So much has changed since then, but when I close my eyes and hear this song, I’m a teenager again. Hell, most days I still do until I’m reminded I’m 30! I thought 30 would look a whole lot different than it does, but you come to find you’re still the same person you were back then. I struggle to find music these days that holds much meaning or that perfectly encapsulates a feeling or emotion that I can’t put into words, but somehow the melodies and lyrics can. Other commenters are right, we are the lucky ones, and I’m happy that we’re all here to share it. Just think, the possibility of us all listening to this song back in our teen years at the exact same moment is good, and I think that’s pretty special.

they even played Get Free at some VMAs back then, closing after the Hives (which seemed to make their frontman Pelle mad); I think there's a video of that performance on YT btw the Vines were big during the Highly Evolved era, but the critic really abandoned them after Winning Days, even though they continued to write great music. guess Craig's behaviour, especially at TV shows, contributed to their "disappearance" from the media as well. dude's a genius but has had his own demons to fight

I swear this is the most underrated band ever. They got a bad wrap as being a "Nirvana clone", which may hold some merit if all you looked at was their radio played singles such as "Get Free", "Outtathaway", and "Ride". But when you listen to their other stuff, and their full albums as a whole, you realize that they were goddamn amazing in so many more ways. Sure they could do the edgy "grunge" stuff well, but look deeper and you'll find something amazing.
@roberto5577663 жыл бұрын
I used to listen to the vines a lot when the band came out at the beggining of the 2000s, i bought their first album cause i listened to get free and outthatway on the radio and watched the videoclips on MTV. So i found more than just that two songs on the album. I think they sound like Nirvana and the Beatles. Two awesome bands in the rock history.

I know. I really hate how in America, everyone tries to instantly attach/compare one band to another as opposed to hearing it on its own smh
@cheeseburgerwalrus4992 жыл бұрын
@@breath888 It's a shame, but it's too easy to compare bands, because in reality, it's all been done before. But the bands that do have the same style as some big name band, but happen to fly under the radar, are the bands that are most worth listening to in my opinion. I'm not saying new things in music can't be reached, or that a new "sound" can't be made. But it's not as if the Vines did anything original, they just did what they did extremely well, and they don't get the credit they deserve partially because of the labeling. It just sucks to see a band slapped with a label when the majority of their music doesn't even fit that label. They have their hits, and then they have even better music, but since they were slapped with a label, no one really ever discovers it. If that makes sense. Fuck of I know. I'm just some dude on the internet who has always loved this band and always will.

But now that I've discovered this incredible album called Winning Days and other gems from Highly Evolved and Vision Valley all I've got to say is... HOLY SHIT, Craig Nicholls is such a crazy genius, what an amazing songwriter, man... He instantly became one of my top rock'n'roll heroes. So, yeah, sorry for being a decade late from the party, lol. The album this song was taken from was dismissed by critics due to the fact that during interviews The Vines referred to the songs as 'the ones that didn't make it on the first album'. Winning Days is the better album for so many reasons, but critics couldn't see past the flippant hyperbole of the band. The Vines shot themselves in the foot with these comments, and yet, for me, the songs from the second album stand the test of time much more rigorously.
