the virginian 1929 1653AM 29..3.22 SPEAKING AS OMEONE WHO HASNT BEEN TO AMERICA... i think: it must have been far worse than anything depicted here... i think it's a bit long winded for an early picture. pre-code, also. but no matter - it might be worthwhile...

I agree, but at the same time there’s lots of people putting either fakes out there, or some of the footage is slowed or sped up so that your never truly get the original version. The original version of this all time classic came in around 90 minutes on the run time, so I’d speed this one up a bit.

Great film. It does not age. First time I saw The Virginian was on TV in the mid-seventies with my grand-father who loved all Westerns, specially Gary Cooper's. So when I watch these films again I feel that I am still with my grand-Pa, watching it. Thanks for uploading it.

Walter Huston shows his depth of acting by convincingly playing the villain Trampas here. Huston went on to win an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor in 'Treasure of Sierra Madre', directed by his son, John Huston. John Huston also directed his father in an an uncredited role as Captain Jacobi of the freighter La Paloma who, after being shot, delivers the Maltese Falcon to Sam Spade (Humphrey Bogart).

When a man is called out as 'dead' most films leave it at that and don't tell the public 'how dead is he?' This film goes the full mile and tells you he's deader than a 'cold mackerel' - at least now we know how dead he is! They could have said 'he's deader than a doornail' which would also work!

My problem with this story is, it's SO SAD when Steve gets hanged. "Sad movies always make me cry," as Sue Thompson sang. Well not cry, but it makes the movie so uncomfortable for me. Cooper was quite a good singer, wasn't he? A very pleasant singing voice. I wouldn't have recognized Walter Huston if I hadn't read the credits. He's more familiar to me from his later movies, when he was sort of an old-timer.

It’s mind blowing that we are watching a film that is almost 100 years old! Those people back then never could have imagined our world today. Hard to believe that all these people are dead. They looked so alive and well back then. Kinda sad how quickly time passes. Even those babies are about 95 or 96 years old now. Those school kids are 100+. I wish I could imagine this film being in color and hearing what the actors/actresses really voices sounded like. This was one of rhetorical earliest sound films ever, so I doubt the sound is accurate

What I remember of "The Virginian" was Trampas was a tough, mean friend of the Virginian unlike Doug McClure's character - though not like the film ending either. I kind of would have liked seeing Randolph Scott in this role because of his Virginian accent and more refined character. Still I love James Drury in this role.
@cinemascoper7628
@cinemascoper7628 8 жыл бұрын
+Jake Drew Before the TV show -- book, play & films -- Trampas was an outright villain. The TV series altered him into essentially the Steve character of the book, a charmingly roguish friend of The Virginian. Re Randolph Scott's "Virginian accent": Scott was born in VA but raised in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Cinema Scoper Right. I think because they already had a Steve on the show in the beginning and Steve and Trampas alternated on the TV show. I went to visit Randolph Scott's grave in Charlotte. He's my favorite western star.

@@cinemascoper7628 I grew up in in the Clinch Mountains of SW Virginia. The "Mountain" (AKA "Midlands") accents in the Southern Mountains areas of NC, VA, TN, SC, & GA is very similar, as it was descended from the Scots-Irish who settled in the Southern Appalachians. As a matter of fact, the "Midlands" accent extends into AR, MO and TX. I lived in AZ for 20 years, and was often asked what part of TX I was from. I always replied, "TX was settled by Virginians and Tennesseans, so Texans ought to sound like us"!
