Lady Shogun is the real MVP. She’s strict but level headed, actually taking the time to observe the economy firsthand. This movie was surprisingly well grounded for a “nearly all men die” kind of movie.
@AdmiralBison Жыл бұрын
She's actually moderate by today's standards, but I imagine would be considered very ultra progressive and liberal in conservative Japan of that period.
@kevinwarburton2938 Жыл бұрын
@@AdmiralBison A huge driver of Conservatism was related to maintainance of hegemony of wealthy over poor & male dominance/protection of females so losing 80% of males would upend that conservative consensus but with a new conservative order still based on wealth/clans replacing it quite easily as even in male dominated Japan woman had a lot of power/influence behind scenes and leading men/elders in clan would be replaced by the eldest women. Mistake here though as Shogun and Empress weren't the same position and also death rate of 80% would not be evenly/equally distributed so if one clan/province only lost 66-75% of males they'd be in position to defeat other clans and could adopt outsider clan males to their clan and you could see a reverse situation where patriarchy deepens and every man being a Lord and Master of a harem of 7-8 females or a proportional distribution of females according to wealth/status/power.

Oh my god I remember reading this manga YEARS ago, the art was so beautiful. And the story is quite poignant and sad, I can't believe I'm seeing a live-action adaptation of it today! And it looks like they actually honored the source material too
The manga of this is so much more interesting. This movie only covers volume 1 and the rest of the over 20 volume series is lady shogun reading about the history of Japan since the disease that killed men was introduced. An interesting tidbit she discovers is that the first female shogun was actually raped by a man at age 12 and conceived a stillborn child by him which was why he was put to death. After years and years, this tradition of putting the man who takes the shogun’s virginity to death was just passed down without the context that this happened because of an actual rape/loss of innocence.

This movie seems really crazy but you'd be shocked that this has always been the case across many Monarchies in history, just with the sexes reversed.
@dcworld43492 жыл бұрын
Kinda, when it came to the Monarchs themselves it was a bit more like how Djengis Khan would demand to be the first to r-word the women to try and find the strongest and best bloodline to carry forward their linage. And there was also a bit of to be blunt not wanting to be the second or 30th man. As for the rest, some of that still goes on today in places like South Korea where there are 30 million men with no way of finding a woman. Which is why South Korea has such a relaxed status when it comes to letting women from North Korea in, but with a terrible condition in that unless the women are lucky and ends up with a husband that is a good person. They can easily wind up with monsters who will threaten to send them back if the women don't essentially accept to being treated like slaves. If they are lucky they will only get treated like a piece of living flesh by that particular monster acts more like a pimp than a husband knowing that they can make easy money by having arrangement with other desperate and pathetic men who gets to rent the wives. It's why I don't understand why we don't appreciate what an absolute miracle it is how far we truly have come in first world developed countries. We act as what we have is the normal state of the human race, and of course that is not to say that things can't get better and that we still don't have work to be done. And what is going on in the US right now with the supreme court is sadly one of the biggest setback to what a free society for women needs to have for them to be able to be free. Given that we can get as progressive as we want, it's not going to change biology and that women are the only ones who needs to not only carry a child to term but, unlike what they have been lead to believe for the past 20 years. Don't have all the time in the world, unlike men who has a much easier time becoming parents for most of their lives.

They should have added an aspect where certain males pretend to be females on the surface to gain positions of power among the matriarchy, kind of like how certain women in the past acted like men or identified as men to become emporers and that kind of thing.

Wow! This is a very interesting movie, so many socio-political and cultural themes addressed. The men becoming scarce commodities and treated as birds in gilded cages, the potential destruction of masculinity as a side effect in the long term. I wonder how the Lady Shogun's men took it when she released them? Were they happy? Or upset the free ride was over?

I've read the manga and no, they are very upset when they are compelled to leave the palace. These men are actually the ones who are in high ranks in Ooku, thus they can enjoy luxurious lifestyles that they can't get outside the palace. Also, they are sons of noble families and they are sent to the Ooku to compete for the Shogun's heart, sire her children and gain political benefits for their families. Being dismissed means they fails their mission, so they may be punished by their families and become a laughingstock of their peers.

I'm pretty sure if such a disease did occur and there was only 1 man for every 4 women, this is not the way Japanese society would have gone. Women simply outnumbering men is such a society as Japan was then would not have meant men becoming what they became in this movie. No way men who lived in such a patriarchal and honour based society would have given up their traditional roles like this. If anything their positions would have been further entrenched and polygamy would be the norm.
@goingindieEN2 жыл бұрын
Yea, that would mostly likely happen first until the population of men kept dwindling or never recovers to nominal levels. A power creep of women taking over will happen since they would eventually take over the roles of men. Ain’t no way they would have enough guys to fill the empty ranks unless the disease was cured or stagnated over time.
@Ash-if7uw2 жыл бұрын
Wrong. That's why it would be more fun to tear them down from their positions of power and make them live as sex slaves 🥰 the women outnumber the men, but nice try?
@20SushiGirl2 жыл бұрын
Impossible, considering that most men in power are old, the chances of them dying are even higher so out of 100% there would be maybe 15% left at best? There’s absolutely No way they could possibly be able to keep themselves high in power there’s only one scenario that can be played out- like it’s shown in the movie women would’ve taken over.
@Hello-uk5xp2 жыл бұрын
@@20SushiGirl bro Japan had laws that made sharia law a joke, no way this will have happened in Japan, maybe Sweden or Norway or something. You also said they is no they can keep themselves in power, a 17 year old average boy can take on 5 women, and that’s just facts
@20SushiGirl2 жыл бұрын
@@Hello-uk5xp again, out of 100% there won’t survive more than 15%, no, 1on 1 maybe physically not but when there are 8 women on every 2 men, it’s too much and physically impossible. You can argue as much as you want but the movie showed the outcome. Btw, don’t assume people’s gender. Have a nice one.
