As COVID-19 spread across the globe, why was the U.S. caught so unprepared? An investigation of how America’s leaders failed to prepare and protect us - and who is accountable.
This journalism is made possible by viewers like you. Support your local PBS station here: www.pbs.org/donate
In this 90-minute FRONTLINE documentary special, award-winning journalists Marcela Gaviria and Martin Smith trace the coronavirus’s path across the globe and identify a chain of fateful missteps - from Chinese authorities’ early silencing of dissent around the virus's emergence in Wuhan, to the World Health Organization’s failure to more quickly sound the alarm, to Italian officials’ slow initial reaction. Then, “The Virus: What Went Wrong?” zeroes in on key moments in the Trump administration’s halting response - including warnings going back to January, the CDC’s inability to manufacture and mass-distribute a working COVID-19 test early on, and a string of missed opportunities to contain the virus before it was too late.

My husband caught COVID-19 in February of 2020 while working in rural Washington when Trump was claiming it's only "one person from China." I got him home to SoCal. He was patient #4 in the remsdesivir trial, saved his life.

That is so tragic. So sorry for your loss. I was an aid in the long term care facility the pandemic really changed on how I view the world. Walking into the first covid positive room for the first time scared the shit out of me. Almost quit that day. I needed that job. It was necessity that caused me to stay. Had a big problem with people on unemployment making more money than me just by staying home. Was not prepared to be taken care of infected residents during a pandemic I didn't sign up for that. But I survived can have pride knowing I made a difference. Someday I can brag to my grandchildren Grandma survived the pandemic by taking care of the infected. Not because I was brave, oh hell no needed my job. Anyone that voluntarily does covid care out of the kindness of their heart knowing the risks are the true heroes their bravery should never be forgotten. May your friend rest in peace.

As long as the current mode of conservatism holds high offices that won’t happen. Frontline is, first & foremost, INTELLIGENT. The producers look at issues with an emphasis on facts & analysis - both of which have become politicized. Trumpian conservatism is about fear, control, & fantasy. Facts that don’t cater to their fears are rejected, their need for control is rooted in fear, & fantasies (conspiracy theories, interpreting religion to support a political agenda, scapegoating) are fed to them to allay certain fears & amp up others. The Trumpians who walk the halls of the capital buildings have an additional agenda they desperately try to keep on the down low; self-interest. Money & social position pretty much covers it. You could say that our Founding Fathers set up a fantastical system which has always fomented conflict via hypocrisy & inconsistency. Idealistic, beautiful prose resting on a foundation built from the opposite. The only demographic all that pretty prose uniformly applied to from the get-go? White males. FACT. Every other demographic was part of the foundation, the not-so-pretty REALITY. Blacks, women, the natives of this land, the mentally impaired, religions other than Christianity (American version.) Since the Civil War - when white men as a class were FORCED to give up slavery . . . CONFLICT. The violent kick-back of the KKK & their sympathizers, women’s suffrage, the practical application of non-Xtian religions, the Civil Rights movement, the right to hold political beliefs counter to democracy/capitalism, the ERA, the LGBTQ movement, and - last but not least - the enduring struggle between institutional religion & secularism. Every single ounce of actual equality has had to be fought for on the ground & in the courts. Why? That’s not what the prose of our founding documents promised, yet here we are, embroiled in another crisis. Trump’s elevation is a nostalgic triumph of (imo) of white, male-oriented privilege. That’s the reality of “MAGA”, while it’s being simultaneously & publicly denied. Feel a little familiar? It should. Behind the scenes, a lot of Trumpians are quietly raking in the money - the one thing that can ensure they stay above the privations of the hoi polloi. So, yay MAGA-STYLE CAPITALISM! For the good of the country & our future, Trump HAS TO BE an aberration, a one-off, our first & only novelty president. If he’s the start of a trend . . . wave bye-bye to our better angels because we won’t be seeing them for a long time.

I don't relish being the bearer of bad news but the polio vaccine was known to be unintentionally contaminated with cancer virus and so the long history of cancer around the world from the 1960's forward. The U.S. government knew about it but could not reveal it to the American people. I learned about this by reading Judyth Vary Baker's book _Me & Lee_ . She was a young biochemistry prodigy working to find a cure for cancer and President Kennedy's alleged assassin Lee Harvey Oswald's extramarital lover in 1963 and they both met coincidentally and worked together on a CIA project to develop an aggressive cancer virus to be used to assassinate Cuban dictator Fidel Castro. Oswald was a secret U.S. government agent and he was assigned the task of delivering the perishable cancer virus to a contact in Mexico City in September, 1963 but the contact never showed up and Oswald tried his best to deliver the virus to Cuba himself to no avail. Oswald was later roped into a conspiracy to assassinate President Kennedy and was also part of an assassination abort mission. Needless to say he was thrust into a predicament and was set up and posthumously framed for the assassination in order to curtail suspicion of a conspiracy which is exactly what it was.

To play with people's lives for political gain is absolutely disgusting and infuriating because life is such a precious gift and should be treated as such. There is no excuse to ever justify putting politics over informing people of the truth and facts when a virus with the potential to have deadly results reaches the shores of America and beyond. This is sickening and maddening at the same time.

In my hometown in Puerto Rico, a relative of my daughters from their mother's side was the first case reported. He spent over a month in the ICU and to this day he has difficulty walking or standing up. He ended up having to resign from his job which required for him to always be going from one place to another. Hardly ever had a chance to sit down for more than a few minutes. Another relative refused to get vaccinated based on her religion and about 2 weeks ago (it's 2023) learned she had covid. A friend of mines and her mom also had it about 3 months ago so the virus hasn't dissapeared. Protect yourselves.

But will they teach kids that the real death rate is >1% and they shut down the country over politics or will they teach that orange man 👨 bad? The virus is the propaganda as is that Medicare for all and free college is something that would be good for the country and not destroy our great country and take us broke. I wonder if you will think Medicare for all is a good idea when they tell you that your tax rate has to go up to 70%+ to pay for more handouts? As Americans we are Guaranteed equality not equity your results depend or your effort as it should. If college should be free then as a college graduate you should make the same as someone working at McDonald’s, or are you leftist is equity what you want only when it benefits you?

All they did and could do was give us a proair-hfa inhaler. mind you we never had history of breathing problems or Flu like symptoms that severe. we truly believe COVID was already here since late November when we got sick mind you we live in NY and had been ice skating for my birthday Nov 30th in NYC and visited China town! Well, that’s pretty silly. It is an airborne virus, only transferred through air. The virus is killed immediately when exposed to outdoor air. It was designed in a lab and only survives in indoor lab like conditions. Avoid spending long hours indoors in large crowded buildings with recycled air. Get as much fresh air as possible. Do not wear masks outdoors. If you insist on wearing a mask in doors in crowded places, make sure it’s an N95 respirator or bette. Make sure it fits properly, and only use it one time. Use disinfecting nasal spray and gargle with mouthwash daily, especially after spending time indoors with others. Wearing masks does not promote good health, it can lead to bacterial infections of the airways, mouth and skin.

Reverse positions often, lie if needed. The hoax statement is less important than the continual misinfo like “It’s under control”. Confronted about that later, he spins it. Asked by a reporter at one point about lack of tests, he replies, “Everyone can get a test” (absolute BS at the time). All these things pile up.

Especially the one who cannot be sued while in office. I think the law needs to be updated so that when national damage/loss of lives are involved, the people do not need to wait for an election -- any incompetent at a high level of office including the President and Commander in Chief -- should be removed at once for the sanctity of the Office of the Presidency, for the safety of the American people. The loyalists who protect such abuse of power should also be summarily removed. The patriots that were unfairly removed like Marie Yovanovitch, Vindman, Richard Bright etc should be reinstated at the same time.

Feverishly rushed without question, and quelled the spread, while here in America, an administration with a President so full of himself failed in the most tremendous fashion. To hear that possibly 80% of the death toll could have been saved, if it had been taken seriously from the beginning… My heart goes out to anyone who lost someone to covid during this political shit show… I don’t know how anyone can watch this, and still think Trump “made America great again”.

States and our governors were not even prepared for when we did lock down and a lack of food, services, and supply chain would have been more detrimental to the citizens if it was earlier. 5. I was anticipating this official Frontline episode on Covid-19. As usual, Frontline did not disappoint. Thank you, Frontline, and thank you very much, Mr. Martin Smith. It was also nice to see Dr. David Ho on this episode being interviewed. I personally wish that him, and Don Francis, could’ve led the charge in this crusade to fight against this virus, like they did with the AIDS epidemic; like Dr. Ho also did with SARS, and the way Don Francis did with Ebola in Africa.

@Bonnie Holman did you even watch the documentary? Go to 52:32, Fauci literally said this is not enough, this only delays the pandemic. It will eventually hit our shores. Fauci knew the inevitable and called for an investment into our medical infrastructure to minimize the amount of human life lost in this pandemic. The point you make about Pelosi going to Chinatown and saying spend money is xenophobic. At this point, Trump was still holding campaign rallies which are bigger spreaders of the virus so you should blame him. Additionally, if Trump listened to everything Fauci was saying we would probably have a nation wide mask mandate, most schools would be online in the fall, and the Trump administration would have created a national plan to give out PPE to states and rapidly ramp up the United States testing capacity.

My husband and I finally caught this virus in November of last year, in spite of taking precautions. We're fully vaccinated and boosted, we continued to wear our masks, and we avoided crowds. In the end, we got sick, but thankfully, our symptoms were mild. It was like having a head cold. At the same time that we were recovering, my niece's father in law became ill and died in the hospital on a respirator. He believed all the misinformation about vaccines and refused to be vaccinated. I've given up trying to convince people to get vaccinated, and I don't condemn them, but I'm very grateful that we were able to take advantage of this life saving preventative.

We were told that masks protect people from covid when the science never supported it. All treatments were "debunked" as being ineffective. The best ways to protect yourself was to get sunlight and exercise, but for some reason the "doctors" refused to ever mention that. Blaming Trump for covid is absurd.
