It was not even highest grossing film in Japan of 1991. The actual top grossing movie of 1991 for Japan was Terminator 2. Only Yesterday is the highest grossing *Japanese* film of 1991.

This is the best slice of life move that has ever been put on screen. And it's criminally underrated too. The plot is simple yet tremendously beautiful and the past juxtaposes against the adult scenes perfectly to show what adult Taeko has become, and it's not at all jarring. Many nuanced moments glanced over me when I watched this as a kid (back then it was just Japanese audio and English sub), but now rewatching this feels incredibly nostalgic and poignant.

I really love that movie, that way of remember with real nostalgia. No great Moments just realistic moments, like us. It's my favorite Ghibli movie (only before of Mononoke)

What I love about Only Yesterday is that it could easily have been a live movie that wouldn't have needed a particularly large budget but instead we get one of the most beautifully animated movies of all time! It's the attention to the backdrops and small details that makes it and all the Studio Ghibli movies so special!

Just finished the movie. Dare I say it, I liked it. Ghibli *is a hit for its otherworldly magical films (howl was my first love and introductjon to anime), but these slice of life movies, depicting the more real aspects of life are underrated gems. I got a lot of wholesome, light-heart vibes from this one. And I really liked that ending. Plus the animation of the quirks of the characters. Also toshio's Seiyuu - 👌🏼i love how distinct and identifiable toshio was with the VA. Also I never thought about the colors! This video was amazing! Thank you!

Can't agree more! I love Ghibli's slice of life movies more than the magical ones. This and From Up on Poppy Hill are my favs. They always depict the student/youth life really well.

This is one of my all time favorite movies. I love Isao Takahata's work and the focus of quite ordinary moments. It never fails to make me emotional in all the right ways! And as an art & narrative nerd, seeing this analysis made me so happy! Thanks for putting this all together :•)

That was a fantastic take on this film. You were able to convey what makes this movie such an emotional masterpiece by focusing more on it's attention to detail, use of color, and visual chic. Though I picked up on the less refined visuals of Taeka's past, I did not notice the prominence of the color red, nor did I pick up on how it correlates to her adolescent self.

Keep strong. Dont forget that despite the evil in this world, God is full of justice, mercy and love. Justice said we broke His perfect law - causing the world's previous perfection to be destroyed - and therefore we deserve Hell (like a punishment in any legal system but this is eternal as His perfect law is eternal too). Don't think you fit in that category? Ever done one of these?: lying, stealing - regardless of how small the object EVER, hating others - which is murder in God's perfect law, lusting (plus God sees our entire thought life). Justice says "the soul that sins shall die" - if we break one in thought/word/deed it's as if we're guilty of all of them. Quite simply, living by the law (which is doing everything perfectly) is impossible for sinful humans . The law shows us that 1. We will die in Hell if we fail to follow it and 2. We cannot save ourselves BUT, 3. God's perfect, immovable law points us to Christ, who followed and fulfilled the law in thought, word and deed perfectly in our place. He did what we couldn't and did it on our behalf. He was then sentenced to death on a cross, and took our personal punishment for our sin, paying our penalty (like paying our fine) completely FOR us, and has given us freedom. If we turn from the sins we have committed and repent (pursue the opposite direction of love through Christ) He will, overtime, recreate us into His image through The Holy Spirit which Jesus sends to all who accept Him as their personal Lord and Savior of their life. We cannot purify ourselves, but Christ lived that perfect sinless, pure life and then allotted it to our "account". That's where our righteousness comes from. Not from any good, works that you or I could do. It is not based on the amount of good works we do. God starts the changes, He carries it on, and He completes it in those who let Him. It's about letting Christ in to guide and teach you and obeying Him, again, through His power and instruction). He is our substitute in His life, death and resurrection. He essentially rewrote history in our place so that, if you believe in Him, it will be as if YOU had never sinned if you accept Christ's death as our own in our place. He is in Heaven right now preparing a place for us so that He can take His faithful, believing children home with Him when He returns. He will ressurrect us from death when He returns, giving mercy to those who accept His love, forgiveness, instruction and teachings in their life, and give justice to those who refuse it. He doesn't want ANY of us to go to Hell and die for continuing in evil and rejecting His way to life, thats why He died FOR us. Hes giving EVERYONE a chance, He wants everyone to take the free gift of salvation from Hell. He wants us to be His and begin to follow His life of love and service through His power and abiding (staying) with Him. So long as we keep our hearts near to Christ through His strength, strive to follow His will of perfect love revealed in the Bible, and let Him lead in the midst of (very certain) pitfalls and struggles, we will, in time, win the ultimate victory over sin, pain and DEATH through Christ. Even if you are willing to be made willing, pray for Jesus to come in and He will do what we can't. Give us The Holy Spirit who will guide us in the right way. NOTE: You are NEVER too sinful or messed up that God cannot turn your life around through Jesus. EVER If you have any questions let me know

Am I the only one who really disliked this movie, I think it's one of the worst Ghibli films, I just find it incredibly boring and has some uncanny valley shit in the characters. Of course this is just my opinion

No you'll find that that's an extremely popular opinion. Takahata's works are usually considered below the Miyazaki films (with the exception of Grave of the Fireflies and MAYBE Kaguya) - and I'd be lying if I said that I preferred Only Yesterday to something like Mononoke or Castle in the Sky, but I still consider it a great film.

I've seen almost 3200 films and Only Yesterday might be in my top 10 of all time, definitely top 20. And whatever you were feeling about the animation wasn't caused by the uncanny valley, that's a phenomenon that effects us when a false representation of a human is extremely close to real, but just off a tiny bit.

My least favorite Ghibli movies are The Earthsea Cycle and Ocean Waves. Ocean waves, while the story is pretty down to earth just doesn't really go anywhere and Earthsea Cycle on the other hand is an adaptation of a book series, where the watcher knows nothing about the world and they have less time to explain how the world works.
