Douglas Skaalrud wait the G engines are the 2 stroke 710s, right? If I recall correctly the T4 710 is a 4 stroke?
@scenicdepictionsofchicagolife6 жыл бұрын
@@Creeperboy099 no such thing as a Tier 4 710 mate. The Tier 4 engine, the 1010J (and is also the platform used to create the CAT C280 Family of engines, though with MANY parts redesigned) is a derivative of the old 265H engine that failed due to harmonic balancing issues or something along those lines. Also just that it was EMDs first foray into four stroke and it had a variety of teething issues like uneven crankshaft stress from a four stroke cycle as opposed to a two stroke. GE actually experienced some similar issues with the FDL with their inline variants and also with their HDL engine in the AC6000s. This is why you don't see SD90s nor AC6000s almost ever in the wild. Two stroke is FAR simpler, less intensive to maintain. This by no means means that four stroke isn't still superior, it's just more complex and operates very differently. Oh and, before you ask, yes CAT does own EMD, now branded simply as ElectroMotive.

I love the sound of the air compressor when it kicks in, the way the sound is syncronized together with the main engine (since the shaft spins it from the main engine). I still love the sound of EMD SD40-2 way better though, the way it whistles, the sound of turbo. I always know there's an SD40-2 in a consist before I even see it, just from it's amazing sound. Also the sound of SD38-2, which sounds same as GP38-2. And the way SW12 or other Switcher locomotives sound. General Electric locomotives don't even compare to the incredible sound of Electro-Motive Division/ General Motors locomotives.

Why dying breed? EMD SD60M's are not that old. Locomotives last for generations, and get tuned up, repaired, rebuilt and repainted after so many years of use, and will last for more years to come. I understand if it was an SD9, but SD60M's are not that old. I always love older EMD's locomotives such as SD9's, SD38-2's, SD40-2's & SD50's, as well as GP"s, Switchers, Slugs, High-Hoods, B-units and Snoot Nose units.
@MP34.95 жыл бұрын
Age wise they are not that old. But with the millions of miles under their belt, wear and tear is unavoidable and the cost of maintaining an older, less reliable unit, is far greater than much of the newer power Class 1's have today. Many have already sold, retired, or scrapped these units, ie. NS, CSX, etc as new power begins to roll in or if the power is not needed, the oldest on the rosters are the first to go.
