The Volcanic: Smith & Wesson's First Pistol

Forgotten Weapons

7 жыл бұрын

The deep beginnings of the Volcanic go back to Walter Hunt's Volitional Repeater, which became the Jennings repeating rifle, which then became the Smith-Jennings repeating rifle when Horace Smith was brought in to improve it. Smith was able to make it more commercially viable than the Jennings had been, but he recognized that the system needed significant changes to really become successful. He had met a fellow gun designer who had similar ideas, by the name of Daniel Wesson, and the two would spend a couple years developing and refining the system. In 1854 they thought it was ready for production, and formed the Smith & Wesson Company.
Included in the original company was a man named Courtland Palmer, who owned the patent rights to the Jennings system. Smith & Wesson's system would probably have been deemed an infringement of Palmer's patents, and by bringing him into the company they avoided legal trouble. The fact that he was a relatively wealthy financier of the new company certainly didn't hurt!
The pistol that S&W started producing was a manually repeating one with a tubular magazine under the barrel holding either 6 or 10 rounds. It was available in the .41 caliber Navy model (note: not actually adopted by the Navy) and the .31 caliber pocket version. In this first iteration, both used iron frames, which were all engraved lightly. The prices were pretty steep, and the guns suffered from some reliability problems and a fundamental problem of underpowered ammunition (the .41 caliber had a muzzle velocity of just 260 fps / 79 m/s). However, they did offer a much greater level of rapid repeating firepower than the muzzle loading revolvers of the period, and gained some loyal fans. In total, just 1700 of the guns were produced before the company went bankrupt, about a year after forming.
To recover from that setback, they reformed the company into the new Volcanic Repeating Arms Company, and sold stock in the new company to generate a new supply of capital. This allowed them to get back into production, and the Volcanic company would make another 3000 pistols, all .41 caliber Navy types, before also running out of money 19 months later in 1856.
At this point, Smith and Wesson decide to move in another direction, and one of the main creditors of the Volcanic company is able to acquire all of its assets and put the guns into production a third time. The name of this creditor? None other than Oliver Winchester. Winchester puts a new infusion of his own money into the company under the name New Haven Arms Company. This company produces another 3300 guns, both large and small frame by 1861. The New Haven company comes very near to bankruptcy itself before finally changing the design to create the Henry repeating rifle. The Henry's rimfire ammunition finally solved the reliability and power problems of the Volcanic, and became the starting point for Winchester to become one of the predominant American arms making companies.

yeah it is, well I'm going to make it be what happens is there are 4 8 man teams in a battle starting on the edge of a volcano and they are all using jetpacks and the objective is that you have to hit the other guys jetpacks with large metal balls to make them fall into the volcano and there is nothing to tell which team is which until all but what is left of one team remains and they will be alerted by a loud siren then the game controllers will cause the volcano to start erupting and give the remaining players time to escape before the eruption there are no foul moves and to force players over the volcano there are explosives that activate 10 seconds after the match starts on the edge of the volcano and there are dudes on anti-aircraft guns that will shoot down anybody who flees the arena

He said .22lr. I think the OP is meaning for those later versions chambered in 44 rimfire, thus keeping the mechanism the same. I was saying that it would be fairly simple to make a swaging die set for 41 rocket ball. The assembly of the other components would be time consuming and tricky, but less so than making forming dies to make 44 rimfire brass.

SgtKOnyx I mean they won't be great, but they could potentially be decent. If you switched to something a bit tougher like brass and lengthened the skirt a little, used a pretty strong modern powder (keeping in mind that even the first single base powder was 3 times more powerful than black powder), then laquored the back instead of cork, you could have a marginally useful caseless cartridge I suppose. Still have to deal with extraction, but I think that'd be the lease of the issues
@SgtKOnyx
@SgtKOnyx 7 жыл бұрын
farmerboy916 It kinda just turns into a short, weak version of whatever caliber it is. Since modern ammo could use the same powder after all. I admit it'd be a cool novelty, just not a practical choice overall.
@farmerboy916
@farmerboy916 7 жыл бұрын
SgtKOnyx Some people are obsessed with caseless, so it'd appeal to them at least. I'm just wondering if you could reasonably make it have the same case volume/ length as whatever it's supposed to be mimic-ing, essentially just making it pseudo caseless ammo. On the other hand most cartridges are not as high pressure and as hot as they could reasonably be, having a lot of filler or lower power powder, so you could presumably upload a great many without the same case capacity.

I believe its called a Volcanic pistol because of the massive hammer. Vulcan was the roman god of fire and metal working, and was often depicted with a large hammer which he used to forge with. I believe someone must have made the connection between the two at some point, and coined the name Volcanic Pistol

My dad worked at S&W before he retired, and they would have a family day where they toured the factory and had a picnic. They have a display old guns and one of them was an original volcanic with a really low production number like one of the first 10 made. I wonder how much that one costs?
