The 2000s was arguably the decade of the 10 cylinder engine: Dodge had their V10 powered Viper since 1989 and they even stuffed a Viper V10 into the Ram pickup truck, Lamborghini and Audi jointly developed a V10 to be used in the Gallardo (later Huracan) and R8 supercars respectively with Audi even stuffing that V10 into sedans and even wagons. BMW, being heavily involved in Formula 1 at the time, also put a V10 in their M5 sedan and wagon. Porsche took their V10 that they had developed for motorsports in the 90s and put into a road car: the Carrera GT. A car considered to be one of the best sounding cars of all time but also one of the most difficult cars to drive (which we sadly found out the hard way in 2013). Toyota, also being involved in Formula 1 during this time, was developing a V10 around this time with Yamaha which made it's way into the Lexus LFA: a car which many consider to be THE best sounding car of all time. And of course, there was the 3 litre era of Formula 1 that lead to arguably the best sounding era of the sport with all the teams opting for V10s over V12s and V8s. Yes, the decade saw plenty of V12s, V8s (naturally aspirated or otherwise) and so many other different configurations of engines but we never had so many V10s before or after since. I miss those days.

Great video ! You ALWAYS teach me some engine knowledge that is new to me, and, even better, VERY interesting and inspiring .. so there is a 10-cylinder version of the VR engine concept, created by putting two VR5 in a classic V-engine layout, whoaa, just lovely, that's what a gearhead's wet dreams are made of 😍😆😅 ... you didn't mention it a single time in the video, but i know you're completely aware of the enormous potential in the VR concept that can easily be unleashed with some - or even better - much boost. VR5 and VR6 both are capable of doing 400-500 hp for many years/ hundredthousands of kilometres if it's done right. Now let that sink in and think again about that 10-cylinder engine 😳😳😮🦾

I m sure I m not the only one to comment on the outstanding graphic for the VW W10 working. The accompanying soundtrack, in sync with the "cartoon", that unique, beguiling and unmistakable ten cylinder sound, did seem to have the character and quality of a W10 - although I couldn't describe exactly what that was and how it differs from a V10. Somehow "lumpier" - yet weirdly smoother - at the same time. If indeed it is the real McCoy, an actual recording of one of the three ever made, that is remarkable!❤

I wish VW also made a VR2, a modern take on Lancia’s VR4, a VR 8 (half of a W16), a W4 (two of those VR2s), VR7s, W14s, VR9s, W18s, VR10s, and finally W20s. Why? Because engineering and the ability to be modular to an extent. Maybe I’ll have to take on these as engineering projects one day and make a modular VR/W engine family

fascinating. After that pic floated around recently of the W-10 block with all the "what the heck is that" kinds of comments, it's great to get some info on the history. It's too bad everyone's going to small displacement low-cylinder-count turbo engine these days. An Atlas Cross Sport or a re-introduction of Passat, CC, or Phaeton featuring a W-8, -10, or -12 would definitely have my interest. Especially if they mount it longitudinally to drive the rear wheels primarily.

The 2000s had to have been the best decade for naturally aspirated engines: the Volkswagen Auto Group had their VR6s and W8s and W12s and they also had V10s of which some were stuffed into sedans and even wagons. Porsche had their V10 powered Carrera GT while Yamaha was developing the Lexus LFA V10 during this time and of course, there was the V10 powered Dodge Viper. Ferrari, Lamborghini, Aston Martin, Mercedes Benz etc all had V12 powered supercars or grand tourers and there were V8s made by every manufacturer in every part of the globe. Even the V6s were for the most part naturally aspirated unlike nowadays where they are all turbocharged for emissions and fuel economy related reasons. We'll never experience this kind of variety ever again. But man, what a time it was to experience!

VR6 stands AFAIK for V-Reihenmotor (inline v-engine), 6 Zylinder. It's an inline and a v-engine at the same time. Power output of the first generation (sold as VR6) was 174PS for the 2.8L and 190PS for the 2.9L respectively here in Germany. Yes - it sounds great. But it's engine management system was already outdated when new. It constantly runs rich and the timing chain is a pain in the a**. To sell them in the mk3 Golf they even de-tuned the (IMO superior) 2.0L 150PS ABF engine. Albeit the strongest 4-cyl. n/a engine they ever made - with the famous Garlock chip they did ~165PS on an otherwise stock engine. When you spend a little more you can easily get to 200PS and over. The VR6 (and later V6/R32/R36) is a tuner's favorite - but it has it's limitations. Especially in light cars like Golf mk1 - mk3, handling suffers dramatically from the massive lump hanging in front of the front axle. For driving performance, the 1.8T or the ABF are better choices.

A couple of things IMO. a) I'd almost put money on the engine being in a BMW was for the engineering team to hide it from their own bosses. Alot of these engines were being developed from within the engineering department without official sign off from the bean counters. This was costing VW huge amounts of money and to say that the bean counters weren't happy with the situation is a understatement. b) Although these engines (I'm referring to the W12 for this comment) were exquisite and jewel like from a engineering perspective which I admire. In real life car owners were saddled with unbelievable maintenance expectations. For example if you owned a VW Phaeton with the W12 the factory maintenance on the valve train components called for complete replacement of the entire system in some un godly low kilometres on a regular basis. Which costs mega bucks. It's no wonder that these Phaetons change hands so often. They also had a multitude of issues unrelated to the engine.
@mrkiplingreallywasanexceed8311
@mrkiplingreallywasanexceed8311 8 ай бұрын
Your notion of it being a secret skunkworks project by the engineers is intriguing and could even be true, although you cite no sources. As for the various comments about the twelve cylinder Phaeton, the overall reliability of that car was indeed not great although I believe that that is at least partly an expression of resentment by owners who have neglected to provide their cars the proper specialist maintenance. Regarding the valvetrain, I don't think you were making it up - nor setting out to mislead or besmirch that aspect of the W12 - but I don't believe your contention. I worked for VAG over a nearly 19 year time scale covering the period of development of the W12 and its introduction initially in concept cars like the VW Nardo and Audi Avus. I may be wrong about the latter - Audi did several like the Rosemeyer which I think on reflection were V12. Perhaps more relevant however was the appearance of production cars in my time there featuring the engine which, by my departure was by no means limited to the Phaeton. From memory it had certainly become an option in the Audi A8 and, although not directly in my purview, various Bentleys. Whilst, of course, it was never something frequently encountered in the manner of the 1.9TDi - enough have been made, over a sufficiently long time to form an accurate picture of their performance in the sense not just of tractive effort (and it's effect on acceleration and top speed), but also its accoustics, "feel", fuel consumption, emissions, serviceability, reliability and longevity. At no point have I ever heard the issue of which you speak. The valvetrain is in fact as robust and durable as any other VW engine, that is to say: "very".

The power output of this engine can be easily surpassed by a modern 5 cyl Audi turbocharged motor which will also be lighter & more efficient. Large displacement engines (which are also incredibly complicated & expensive to rebuild) in light vehicles simply don’t make any economic sense, despite the merits of their technical achievements. Moving into the electric & hybrid era these engines are dinosaurs.
