The Walk

Күн бұрын

The sun is shining in North East Derbyshire!
I am in the village of Killamarsh, just on the outskirts of Sheffield, and I am discovering the abandoned railways and stations of this once industrial Mecca.
I start my walk on the Great Central Railway just south of Killamarsh Central station. I follow the line down the side of the Rother Valley Country Park, until it crosses the active Midland Railway. At that point I switch lines at what was Killamarsh Junction, and take the Lincolnshire, Derbyshire and East Coast Railway back towards Killamarsh.
There are bridges, viaducts, signal boxes, platforms, canals... you name it, it's probably here.
I finish the walk at the site of what was Upperthorpe and Killamarsh station.

Great video Gaz, brilliant break time viewing as per usual. I love that photograph of the old half submerged dragline excavator in the old opencast. And always remember…”If a tree can grow here, should be alright”. Haha

Great walk, thank you! I felt like a disused railway genious this morning, when we drove over the same old track lines out of Bodmin, but this time, I looked around and realised (thanks to these videos) that the very pretty house near by, would have been the Station Master's House. Also, the big bumble bees you will see on your walks this, and next month will be queen bumble bees looking for a new home - they're huge!

Oh I love it! Haha. Yeah the masters houses tend to look similar. That bee was enormous!

Hayup Gareth, that destroyed signal box looked like a giant kit, semi ready for reconstruction, allways tempted by a project. Liking the three arch bridge, viaduct, all those spare bricks knocking about I wonder how many of them disappeared in the night back in the day, for garden walls an outhouses, still engineering blues a bit of a giveaway as to where they came from.. That hole on the bridge, needs a boulder bigger than the hole an levelling over, still you'd get in bother for makein it safer no doubt?! Great walk an chat very impressive vistas of them overhead train tracks, fab stuff. Cheers

I think it was built that way during the war to protect it from German bombs.

That huge retaining wall on the GCR at Killamarsh Central had me thinking the exact same thing until I researched the layout after a cycle ride to there from Chesterfield. Also visited the tunnel, had a mound of earth at the entrance and water in the tunnel itself. Good luck with that, take suitable footwear!

Yeah, tunnel in the same state now, to be honest. I got to it, but it wasn't easy! Ha!
