The Walking Dead's Character Problem | Video Essay

So I have watched the walking dead for 9 long years! I've given up to much of my life now to stop watching this. but with decreasing quality I thought I should discuss why I think it has decreased in quality! RIP Carl!

They needed to create a new leader and they have failed. They needed Rick/Carl. It genuinely saddens me how the show has transformed. Once Rick was gone I felt no connection.

Rick was so crucial to the identity of the show I have watched season 10 or 11 I think season 9 did well without Rick but it does feel very empty. I might go back watch season 10 as the show is wrapping up

He was but he rarely spoke up about it. He kept it to himself. It was much more of a Tyreese role

I agree that the supposed 'heroes' - the ones we're supposed to root for - are all remorseless murderers. One reason I stopped watching the show was because the bad guys were pretty much indistinguishable from the 'good guys'. Once arriving at Alexandria, Rick and co. murder a whole slew of dudes while they're asleep, raid a camp consisting entirely of women & children and take ALL their weapons away, kill more people in their sleep by pouring gasoline over them and lighting a match, stab people in the back, and so on. If I was in this scenario in real life, I would not want to be around Rick, Michonne, Daryl, or Carol, as they're all very dangerous people.

What about Bob? On one side I can see what you mean that he as not exactly the classic example of the moral compass like the ones you mentioned beforehand but he did have a hope spot. I think he deserved some sort of honorable mention.

That is a really good point bob was a good character who I enjoyed and thought he was going to be the one to bring rick back from his darker side and I think there was some interesting stories to tell with his alcoholism. Thanks for the comment!

Genuinely good video. Great point about how poorly utilized Carl was in the show! My only recommendation is to edit out any time you need to restate something. I thought there was a problem with my computer when I heard you stopping and starting over.

I think Carl was killed off because Chandler Riggs is not a good actor. Chandler Riggs didn't have the thespian skills necessary to step into Andrew Lincoln's boots.

I felt Carl was a horrible choice to be the new moral compass. Since season 3, he was pretty much always cynical, brutal and ruthless, willing to do whatever (and fair enough--look at how much he suffered). For him to suddenly become Hershel-like was a complete 180 and I feel that it came out of nowhere

Well, this was a pretty good analysis and pretty accurate in regards to the further decline of the show from season 8 or so….your point about Carl is a good one, but you have to remember the actor is a real person and he had other interests. He didn’t want to spend his whole life on the show!

I personally believe, almost the entirety of what the series is was done in under 2 hours in 2002. To the creator of the video: good vid, keep it up champ. To anyone else reading: watch 28 Days Later, I mean like, ya know, just do.

I think that you ended up being wrong. Seasons 9-11 have been much better than seasons 6-8 even if they don't feel as good as the first seasons thanks to Rick not being there. Darly, Carol and Michonne have all become the new MC and they do their job really well. Judith is also much better than Carl ever was at their role
