Nope...it really was a spur of the moment decision to cut Hershel's leg off. Rick was hell bent at this point to try anything, which was to cut the limb before the effects of the bite traveled. Yes, he could still die, but he was gonna die anyway. So why not?

Season 3 episode 1 was the first episode i ever watched (at a friends house) and after that i went home and immediately binge watched the first 4 seasons (at the time there were only 4 seasons out) and ive been hooked ever since. So this episode holds a special place in my heart lol

"Seed" represents protection from outside threat; environmental threat (the prison). It also represents fertilization (Lori & baby). And growth (Hershel's comment on seeds). Enter Michonne. Pay attention. She's great. lol Daryl & Carol share a bond since Sophia. Let's see how safe they really are in/at this prison. Shane didn't actually care about the rest of the group though. He told Lori one on one when nobody else was around that all he cared about was her and Carl. He would tell Rick he was doing what was best for everyone, but when it came to Lori he told it like it was. He wasn't actually interested in helping anyone else. He also displayed that when he did whatever he could to save Carl but he gave up on Sophia and tried, repeatedly, to get Rick to move the group on (despite that he wouldn't have done so for Carl, versus Rick trying to take care of Sophia's situation even after Carl was out of danger). The actors in season one were mostly (if not completely as far as the mains go? not totally sure on that one) picked out by the showrunner of season one (Frank Darabont), who had previously worked with a good chunk of the cast in other works he was involved in. Many of those actors had already worked together, so I imagine doing so in TWD was a lot easier going for many of them. Carl's actor had previously worked with another person who has a lot of influence on TWD (Gale Anne Hurd). Frank Darabont definitely did an amazing job with the casting though for sure. Shane actually made it to season two because everyone loved Jon Bernthal and his acting/what he brought to the show if I'm not mistaken. Shane is killed in the comic pretty quickly and if they had followed that route he wouldn't have even made it to season two. It's interesting how important they made him in the show. The show version went far beyond what the comic version did with Shane. You've finally gotten to one of the biggest memes! "I'm doin' stuff, Lori. Thangs." 😂 The episode is called seed because Hershel was taking about how they could plant seeds and stuff in the field, while they were sitting around eating together in the field.

Can well just take a moment and observe how awesome the first minutes of the episode plays out? Not a single word is spoken but we can see so much about what the characters have gone through since the end of S2. We can see that a significant amount of time has passed given the way the characters have grown and facial hair (Herschel). They have gotten a lot more experience and are working together as a great team. We can tell by how well organized search of the house is done by all They have bonded and are growing closer to each other. Great scene and great job by the actors conveying all of this.

In regards to the title of the episode, TWD often names episodes with a simple word said in the episode. I believe in this episode when they were all by the fire, Hershel was saying how they can eventually use the fields in the prison to plant seed, therefore the name of the episode. I waited for this since s1 with u guys what I love the most about this first episode is the first 5 mins how the group's moves without saying a word they know exactly what they looking for and what to do now, I just the synergy between the group. Thanks for answering my Question. This is one of my favorite season premieres of any show. It was just beautifully paced and executed. Side note when Rick was talking to Lori earlier in the episode; he said “ I’m taking care of stuff..... thangs.” At the time for some reason that became a very popular meme. 😂😂😂 I guess because of Ricks southern accent and the way he said thangs. As for why it’s called Seed - no clue honestly, I suppose it might be something to do with the symbolism of planting a seed for the future (the future being the prison) though to be totally honest, my brain always immediately connected it to Lori’s baby belly 🤷🏼‍♀️ if I had to make a guess though I’d say it’s a reference to this laying the groundwork for the rest of the season

There are many reasons this episode is called "Seed" possibly 1. Hershel suggests they plant seeds in the prison yard to grow their own crops 2. The group themselves could be the seed planting themselves into the prison, making it their new home 3. Or a reference to Lori's baby

remember when i said the it's human nature to break down into tribal formation you now seeing it first hand, the only time human's are civil is when they have five things in there lives food, water, fire , shelter and security. When these five requirements are met humans have time to forms societies bringing them out of tribal mentality.... we can assume by Lori's belly that's it been at least 6 months on the run since the farm has fallen. that's a lot of on the field training no mistakes can be made and everyone has to pitch in that's why Carl was helping to clear the house and why there moving so quickly and quietly. I bet they would be a tough match for any special forces unit out there. that's some hard core training .. Do also see how there attitudes about the walkers are changing as well no of them are scared any more there taking time to talk about how to clear while being surrounded by the walkers ....This world is forcing them to adapt and over coming.....how everyone is doing there own part now most don't even have to ask what there doing they just know... and here's my question lose a limb with a small chance you might live or not to lose it fight as long as you can for the group before you turn?Great reactions both of you keep it up and i'll keep watching
