He was such a piece of shit that he didn't deserve to die by Michonnes sword. So he just left him there to suffer and hopefully get eaten alive or turn. We never saw any of those as he got shot in the end. What a shame.

Herschel smiled during Ricks speech because he said essentially the same thing to Rick in episode 1 of this season. When Rick was telling Herschel about Ciara, the lady in the woods, Herschel said " you tried to help her, she was too far gone, you're not". And something like, "you came back, you get to come back, we all do", or something along those lines. As always, another fantastic reaction! Your facial expressions alone were priceless and ran the gamut from fear and sadness to rage and loathing.....you weren't alone....feel better and always remember spaghetti Tuesdays!

Got to see it and talking dead afterwards. Have a picture video on my KZbin. Have 10 different shirts and other memorabilia. I have read the graphic novels about 15 times through now(the compendiums). I know I could win any TWD trivia contest show or comic. I have all the novels as well about The Governor. Excellent reads! Love this universe! :) I The novels are based on The Governor in the comic not the show. Brian and Phillip are both real people not just a made up New name. Back when this episode aired, (before i actually watched the show) you couldn't go anywhere without people talking about this episode. I just remember this episode having such a huge impact on people. I was in 6th/7th grade at the time, (now graduated, oh how time flies) and i just remember hearing for an entire week about how Hershel was dead. Mattel love oof. I was a junior in high school but no one in my classes watched the show. I still remember the night this aired b/c I watch this show w/ my dad and when the Gov looked at Rick and the music started playing. I was like he’s not gonna do it and then I was like he is and I kept flip flopping it and my dad was like yeah he’s gonna do it. Hershel needs to be the one to die to get the shooting started and then when Gov went for the throat slash my jaw literally dropped. I was a gov fan and was hoping that he’d become good but once he slit Hershel’s throat. I wanted him to die slow and painfully since there was no coming back from killing Hershel.

Well no, because they shouldn't have been there, they should've been on the bus. Teaching the kids to defend themselves is fine, but I wouldn't say it was 'good' in this instance. However, only putting the weak (children/elderly) and sick on the bus was a bad move too, there should've been at least 1 adult in good health that knew how to kill walkers on the bus.

Carl & Rick’s performance at the end of the episode when they realize Judith was eaten right out of her car seat STILL give me chills to this day. I’m so excited for you 2 to continue this show! I feel so bad for everyone but Carl especially because he tried warning rick about the gov & told daryl he had a shot & they just lost everything. There’s an interesting backstory to that climactic scene with the Governor killing Hershel. The new showrunner Scott Gimple wanted David Morrissey, who played The Governor, to yell the word “LIAR!!” and then cut off Hershel’s head. But Morrissey felt it would be more chilling if he were to whisper “Liar” instead. Scott Wilson, who played Hershel, agreed with Morrissey. Gimple and Morrissey got into a very heated argument, a screaming match no less, right during the filming of that scene, but in the end Morrissey got his way and his whisper 🤫 Morrissey was right too. The whisper was much more effective. To this day whenever I watch that scene and see The Governor appear to consider Rick’s words and then quietly whisper “Liar” I get goosebumps.

*I think the prision is the best option to live in the apocalypse as they were surrounded by walls and fences, there is a small infirmary inside, an industrial kitchen, lots of showers, and also, the most important: people could sleep inside the cells with the doors closed, so that if someone turns into a walker overnight nobody would get bitten. I think Michonne not "finishing" him off is kinda a callback to her conversation with Tyrese. She told him that she was searching for him because it needed to be done and not because she was angry. At the time, I think it was a lie. Her killing him like the way she did, leaving him to die instead of cutting his ass up like we all wanted to was her way of moving on from him. She didn't NEED to because job was done. He was going to die regardless and that was what she wanted. Also, he happens to suffer while he does, well consider that a fateful bonus...

The Governor only cares about people as far as they can make him feel important and respected in the way he feels he’s owed. He cares about his image of himself, not other people’s lives. He sees himself as a savior and hero, but because he’s only serving himself, he’s the opposite.

I think the Governor feels threatened by Rick because Rick doesn’t try to get people to respect him, it just happens organically. Nobody would actually like or follow The Governor if he was himself.

Comic Comparisons : in the comics It’s Tyreese who gets decapitated his comic counterpart is actually introduced much earlier than in the show before they get to the farm the battle for the prison goes down a bit different The Governor is presumed dead for a while before he randomly shows up at the prison gates It should be noted that the Governor never kills all of his people or burns down Woodbury so he still had an army with him him becoming Brian Heriot is completely unique to the show I can’t remember exactly but I think their first attack failed Nonetheless they eventually bust through and kill a lot of people Hershel does die in this battle in the comics but not in the same way He begs to be killed after his son is shot right in front of him and the Governor grants him that Rick tries to escape with Lori and Judith but Lori who is carrying Judith is shot and falls to the ground killing both her and the baby after the Governor successfully wins the prison Lily who was already a member of Woodbury and dealt the killing shot on Lori realizes she also killed a baby and gets mad at the Governor when the Governor shows no remorse she shoots him dead in the head after that nothing more is said about the Woodbury group.

1) A tragedy befalling Hershel Greene has now closed off two major arcs of the Walking Dead saga. Crazy as it sounds, you're still witnessing the show's beginnings compared to what comes after. 2) As much as we've come to hate him, props to David Morrissey for his amazing performance as both Philip/Governor and Brian. You can actually see the moment Brian "died" when he rejected Rick's co-habitation offer compounded with the moment Meghan Chambler died. After that, he basically became the spoiled child on the playground who throws the ball on the roof when he doesn't get what he wants. 3) Michonne didn't finish him because she already got him. He was critically impaled. Plus, that way he suffers instead of getting an easy out. 4) Philip is a sociopath because he has emotions and a conscience but he often chooses to ignore them. Psychopaths have a disconnect with empathy and act the part of an emotional human. We are going to meet an actual psychopath(s?) sooner or later which definitely shows the difference. 5) Philip really didn't kill those campers last episode. That being said it does plant the seeds that there are other groups who did (or didn't) claim those supplies who may (or may not) cross paths with our survivors. (I'm trying to be as vague as possible about upcoming events. I'll only ever spoil/clarify past events or things you missed.) 6) Scott Gimple took over as showrunner starting this season. (Unfortunately, like Game of Thrones and Star Wars, fandom has since split into loving or really, really hating the series. It just feels nice to return to a time when the show was universally loved.)

I remember crying, literally bawling my eyes out over this episode. Things weren’t going to be the same, I knew that-Rick wanted to believe in what he said, that you can back from things but sometimes you can’t. The upcoming episodes and season will change everyone, you know that from the very last scene and the only joy comes from the actors performances.

"You can lose alot of soldiers but still win the game" - The Governor Governor won in the end, even in death. To me this is the biggest good vs. bad story. Rick vs. Negan was good. Negan vs. Whisperers was good. But The Governor was just so sadistic and evil. Alpha & Negan couldn't compare, not by a long shot. Governor did the most damage to Rick. He would of killed him too. Michonne wanted Governor to suffer but in the end & get eaten by the Walkers, he got off easy thanks to Lily. Lmao thanks to Lily, Governor didn't have to suffer :D. Lily saved Philip.
