This is what the song means to me. The car is Jakob Dylan's (the singer) life. Once upon a time, there were two guiding lights in his life - his soulmate and himself. But his soulmate died, leaving the car with just one headlight. But the singer has decided that he is able to continue negotiating his life with just one headlight, even though the other, darkened headlight will forever remind him of what he has lost. But that's just me.

Yea, but "in the middle" is a hard one. I mean it could mean what Lex was spittin' on about, but there's a couple other things I've thought of as possibilities too, like it could be Biblical, there's Heaven (Top), Hell (Bottom), and Earth (middle). Since she's dead and he "thinks her death it must be killing me", he's trying to get himself to try just a little bit to get through this life with only the one headlight half of himself without his soul mate eh? There's other interpretations too, but that's what makes it good art, no?

The organ is a Hammond organ run through a rotating speaker, popular in jazz and gospel. The galloping bass part with the straight drum beat really drives the song forward, and the sound you couldn’t name was a slide guitar.

Personally I can't say enough about The Wallflowers. Thoughtful, poetic, heartwrenching stories and lyrics. Finely crafted music. Very famous at one point, but no trace of glamour. Jakob Dylan: "I tend to write with a lot of metaphors and images, so people take them literally. The song's meaning is all in the first verse. It's about the death of ideas. The first verse says, 'The death of the long broken arm of human law.' At times, it seems like there should be a code among human beings that is about respect and appreciation. I wasn't feeling like there was much support outside the group putting together the record. In the chorus, it says, 'C'mon try a little.' I didn't need everything to get through, I could still get through - meaning 'one headlight."

I've listened to this song thousands of times for decades. I usually don't focus on lyrics, but this song is about a man who had a relationship with a woman. They both loved each other. He left for "more" in life. She never stopped loving him and felt trapped in their town. She killed herself. He comes back for the funeral and all these emotions come flooding back into him. He's trying to resolve the guilt of leaving, his heartbreak, her death, and whether or not he made the right choices. Was it better just making do in the town with her, was there some way through that had the best of all options? Or was she only going to hold him back?
@promontorium
@promontorium 2 жыл бұрын
The chorus is the conflict. The first part is his desire for greater things. "try a little. Nothing lasts forever." The second part is how good he had it with her, even if they didn't have much. "But... Me and Cinderella, we put it all together." Especially the line "We could drive it home with one headlight." The "one headlight" is metaphorical. It's "the middle" half way between nothing and everything. With her they made it work without being rich or having much. Life with her in the town wouldn't have been everything, but they made it work.

Wow, this song finally won a poll? What stream was that? Cool! First time I'd heard this on the radio back in the days on an alternative and college radio stations, I was thinking it was Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. lol. Then I found out it was a band called The Wallflowers when heard their songs more on regular radio stations and MTV videos. They had that old school feel to their songs. Which includes the singer (Jakob) who is the son of the legendary Bob Dylan! That explains everything, was definitely influenced. Bob Dylan was also in a supergroup band ,Traveling Wilburys which including Tom Petty! Roy Orbison, Jeff Lynne (ELO) and George Harrison (The Beatles) . They were folk/roots rock, country rock. Check them out, too. You guys should see the video for this song later on, it's nice. The Wallflowers were a good alternative rock band during the '90s and '00s. This song was their biggest hit (mid '90s). See their other videos/songs like "The Difference" "6th Avenue Heartache", "Sleepwalker", "Beautiful Side of Somewhere", "Heroes". These were also on the radio at times. Good ear from Lex, too. The shuffle/jazz swing vibe she is feeling is probably from the organ and drums. Jazzy, church/gospel, swing music vibe. Also the blooming flower, ethereal, echoey sound, instrument is the slide/steel guitar or maybe the resonator guitar. These are used usually in country music, bluegrass, blues.

In my eyes I look at this song as a musical link between two generations. The 1960-70s generation that remembers Bob Dylan in his heyday, and the one that got this song in the late 90s. I was only a two-year-old when this hit the radio but it's still pretty cool if you ask me! Iconic, poetic chill song with lots of nostalgia!

Yeah the preview commenter said that if Bob Dylan's son he's in this really cool documentary about Laurel Canyon I think it's called Echoes From the Canyon or something like that anyways so much music was going on the whole La seen all the kind of gravitated to that area so yeah you'll have to see that documentary heck maybe you could do a reaction to that that be fun Bob Dylan is such a legend night was so lucky he had been on a sabbatical for God I guess it was something like 10 years which is insane he couldn't have been that long anyway he was not performing for many years and then he got together with his backing band and the name of that group of course is none other than The Band I believe that was in either 74 or 75 no it had to be 74 the funny thing is is we are at that concert and it was at the fabulous Forum there in Inglewood California and so what happened was they recorded that and it was a double album from that very concert and I believe the next day my sister-in-law she was quite pregnant at the time she gave birth to a beautiful baby boy and so she named the boy Michael Dylan Fitch named after Bob Dylan of course the middle name Bob was such an icon you know he introduced The Beatles to marijuana I mean they're taking pills and all of this but they never smoked weed and then all that crazy psychedelic music came along so you can blame Dylan for that and maybe the dentist it slipped a mickey of LSD in there tea before they went out 2 Piccadilly Square I guess they had a grand old time which was great that could have went in a totally different direction alright you Floridians

\|/ LoL... I hit this thumbnail and was just thinking of how I'd seen these guys, ie. "The Wallflowers" way back in the late 90's at a MEMPHIS IN MAY, which is this big 3 day music festival that happens right over The River in Memphis... It always has around four or five big Stages, and on each of these there will always be some group playing their gig; they actually usually always have had an impressive lineup of famous musicians too... mostly the lineups will be the kinds of bands that fit the scene of Memphis city's historic music traditional themes, So, Rock & the Blues, as in the "King of Rock&Roll" Elvis Presley & B.B. King... it is all usually focused on the rock, blues, genres alongside whoever happens to be big at that time in the way of pop stardom box office drawing power... nut it also has had a lot of metal bands, and even a few jazz and (sigh)country bands, all paying all day long for three straight days; right alongside the water on this long stretch of the riverfront situated right next to Mudd Island coliseum & the old Pyramid arena, immediately after crossing the New Bridge, on the Tennessee side of the banks of the Mississippi River... LoL. Anyway, Bob Dylan is the lead singers dad, and he came out on stage and sang a couple of his songs with The Wallflowers... And The Band song "The Weight" was one of them, and it was fucking amazing... that one is, ironically, y'alls that you'd done today, too, and it is the next thumbnail down on my KZbin feed right now which is cool 'cause I had JUST thought about it after seeing this "The Wallflowers" reaction... which was somehow not werid to my mind... kinda coincidental, but it felt intuitively right, ya know... ha. That show was a really, really good one, man... maybe it wasn't quite as amazing as Green Day, or even as memorable as Clarence Carter with George Clinton & The Funkadelecks... but seeing Bob Dylan sing & play his guitar was definitely something I'll always be remembering fondly... I do remember that it was one of the best performances I saw at that years lineup, and that I had just loved the level of cool that it had been to get to actually see just how mesmerizing of a singer Dylan really is! Jesus, that man could relly deliver a raw world-weary feeling and real emotional weight, just with how he'd used certain different inflections & pronunciations, his voice really was worthy of being the voice of an entire generation, like is always claimed... Hell, it had even felt like it was something significant, like I was lucky enough to be watching something historical & worthy of remembering forever... and I still do remember so much about it, to this very day... Like the big white cowboy hat that Dylan was wearing that night... I had never seen him in one before... or very many times since then, come to think of it... yeah, it was honestly pretty damned cool.

Drums, organ, bass, rhythm guitar (Dylan) and lead guitar (also uses a slide for an effect where you said, what is that noise? That is a glass slide on the guitarist's finger while playing) There is also an acoustic resonator guitar overdubbed underneath towards the end. (they are the ones with the big metal circle, with cones for a tinny sound)

Lead singer... son of the great Bob Dylan (just trivia). The storyteller is dealing with the death of his friend, who he was with earlier in life. Friend, or lover, it doesn't matter. She killed herself after trying to handle all the ugliness of life and wound up jumping out her window (died of a broken heart disease... ended at her window ledge). The chorus says that when they were together life was so good and easy (me and Cinderella, we put it all together). So easy that they could have driven home with one headlight and it would have worked out fine. This all leads to the final verse, where he's looking around at his life without her and it sucks (her death, it must be killing me).

The rhythm reminds me a lot of "Lessons in love" by Level 42, a huge hit in the 80s.

This song is so much like Brand and Lex - but they just can't see that together they've turned the engine - and are driving to 1 million subscribers with only one headlight between them. The irony is so strong - I can't believe it. They really need each other - to move from the middle to the better side.

🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶 Saw the Wallflowers in concert years ago in Louisville KY with The Goo Goo Dolls and they were great! ❤ I can totally hear Bob Dylan's voice in Jake's voice when he sings this song. ✨😍

One little overlooked bit of interest with this song is there is not one splash or crash hit from the drummer. It's all hi-hat.

Cool laid back song, remembered when this played on MTV. Cruising around drunk in a hooptie with one working headlight on, while one hand is over my left eye so I can see str8. Only song I know nd like from The Wallflowers. 🤘💀👍

Song is about the suicide of his friend who just gave up. He is saying that you can't live in the middle, you have to commit to life, even if you are broken - like a car with one headlight.

So good! That’s wild, all the online sources for the lyrics say “the funeral at dawn with the long broken arm”… but he is clearly saying “of” not “with”, totally different meaning. Do you happen to remember what interview that came from? I see it’s now been quoted a bunch of places. Thanks for sharing!!!
