Yes, it wasn’t just that John and Olivia got along so well, it was the entire cast. It is so nice that you still enjoy each other’s company and your relationships.

Hi Judy. Thank you for more interesting questions and answers. As an early childhood educator,I have to say that I am so impressed by how the child actors in the Waltons all still enjoyed a normal childhood, and remained well grounded, all later pursuing fulfilling careers, whether acting, writing, business,or education. When you spoke,Judy,of Kami Cotler's mother helping her to learn her lines,I thought about the importance of upbringing in keeping children balanced,in their schooling, extra curricular activities, play time/recreation time, and relaxing time. I get the feeling that this was the case for all of you?

I think the fact that Ralph and Michael had a thing for each other in real life definitely showed through in their acting as a married couple on the show and all the more authentic. Respect to both of them for remaining professional and not acting on their impulses in real life. The whole starcast were very believable on the show which is one of the reasons I always get completely drawn in whilst watching it. Thank you Judy for a great Ask Judy episode and best wishes to you as always from your waltonian superfan in a cold England😉

HI Judy! Thank you for reading my question and taking the time to explain how you all, especially the younger kids, knew your lines and understanding the scene to deliver the correct emotion played out. That was enlightening for me. I was always curious how this worked. Thanks again. Love watching all your KZbin posts of behind the scenes. Have a nice day! Steve

Ha! The Tempest! At least they gave you a pretty green suit and hat to wear! 🙂 Judy, might you sing for all of us once again? Valentine's Day is approaching. Maybe you have a favorite ballad or love song? Your Silent Night at Christmas was so lovely! The Walton's series and beyond seems to thrive on love for sure as evidenced by all your guests, the cast and producers, directors, and all the fans. It's quite a phenomenon! Bless you, Judy, and Walton's everywhere. Are we at the Countdown to Spring?🌱☘️💚

I have a confession to make: I have the complete series (including the movies that followed) and I still tend to watch the episodes on MeTV. Recently, The Tempest and The Whirlwind aired. From a storyline viewpoint, there probably needed to be something that kept Mary Ellen from accepting Jonesy's marriage proposal, but it felt like a huge misstep to bring Curt back, especially if Tom Bower wasn't going to play the character. That said, having Scott Hylands play the character play Curt probably made the declaration of not loving Mary Ellen easier for the audience. (You'd think that I wouldn't have minded a recast since I like Robert Wightman as John-Boy, but as talented as Scott Hylands is, he wasn't given an opportunity to grow into the character before devastating Mary Ellen.) Today's episode was The Hot Rod, an episode I remember more for the secondary arc about the Recipe machine than for Jim-Bob and Jody returning from service. The Baldwin ladies as they scurry away with the coil still gets me 40+ years after seeing it the first time.

Judy, many of your subscribers write about bloopers or other technical questions. I am currently watching the first season, I find the character development fascinating ,as well as the scripts. Through your show, I look at the series in an entirely different way. On a personal note, I would enjoy seeing Michael Rupert as a guest, I had the opportunity to see him in several Broadway shows.

One of the things that stopped me from film and music careers was my ability to memorize dialogue or lyrics. The older I get I wonder if it was just an excuse I was making for myself. Any way thanks for sharing these stories, hopefully as younger folks find these it will help to inspire them to tell stories.

As to the reincarnation of Curt, I think what they could have done was having Curt's family show up and try to keep Mary Ellen marrying Jonesy and travelling all over the county by requesting that they have visitation rights to John Curtis. threatening a lawsuit if Mary Ellen did not agree. Portrayed as the same kind of conniving people Curts sister was in her debut, they would not only be the villains, but it would also explain the difference between Curts's character and that of his sister. As to learning lines, what amazed me about Kami is that when she said her lines she understood the correct and subtle nuances that made the line come to life.. I don't know if that's credit solely to her or her mother but I found her deliveries so on point- not stated just to get the line out of her mouth or over acted and hammy. but with just the right touch of humor ( she has a gift for comedy without realizing she is funny) or pathos. I often wonder where she would have been if she had continued. in theatre. As I was listening to you I was looking out your window to see that the neighborhood is still standing where you are. Those fires in LA are just horrible .My sister and her kids lived in Huntington Beach and Lagua back in the 60's and 70's and i would go out there over Easter Break when I was in college and party. So i had been to So Cal and LA area quite often . My niece lives in Redlands and I have been out there as well and also the San Francisco area where my daughter and nephew live. Once I get over this illness I may try to drive out there one last time.

I believe that "Mary Ellen" had the opportunity to show her abilities. Years now, I refer back to the shows during that time remembering that "shell shock"/PTSD happens in life. This show lives on thanks to the themes being timeless. Thank you to all that it took to create the Waltons series.

Your real life parents and family never had to worry about you being on the Waltons set so much instead of your own home. You were in good company and especially good hands. Your family all knew nothing harmful or emergency would never come up. That was the safest set to be in than anywhere else.

Judy - as you and your cast mates have shared, you had met Earl’s siblings and family members at different times over the years. Any idea if his grandchildren and great-grandchildren understand the long-term impact of the show? I know there have been comparisons to “Little House” because of the time of filming, the themes of the series, etc., but there are no Ingalls or Wilder relatives living today - so the Hamners have a chance to offer their perspective. Thanks as always! Jim

As a second comment,I would like to add that although some children and teenagers can have for facility for learning lines,I find it still pretty impressive, considering the lack of rehearsal time. I mean, did the kids not have table reads,or did they do this on The Waltons? And then, the emotional acting really was brilliant, also of Erica Hunton, who played Holly, in 'The Foundling'. Although the directors and writers wrote for their characters, you can't really teach emotion when children are very young,I guess, as they do not yet, have much life experience to draw from?

I'm watching early episodes. and in the episode, Dustbowl cousins. I was surprised to find out that Jason was 2 years older than Maryellen, it was always my thought that the birth order was. John boy, Maryellen, Jason. So I see now it's John boy, Jason, Maryellen. Now my question is, was Ben or Erin next?

I mean, it's not like you kids were doing Hamlet's soliloquy, right? But a question regarding contracts for the actors on The Waltons-- did you all have to appear in every episode? The reason I ask is, let's say the episode was not about John-Boy, for example. Richard Thomas might just amble in, say "howdy," go up to his room to write the great American novel, and you might not see him again unless you were doing a dinner scene. The same for many of the kids, who, as you indicated, might not have all that many lines in the scenes they're in. I figured it was just to remind the audience that, yes, all seven young Waltons are still around...😀

My observation involves the ladies wearing silk stockings. I know that back in those days, silk stockings had seams in them up the back of the legs. For the most part, no one wore stockings with seams, but I did notice in some episodes it looked as though they were. I also know that seams in stockings in period fashion are sometimes drawn on with eyeliner. Can you explain this?

Hi Judy. I have a quick question. As you all got more comfortable with your roles and more mature, were you ever allowed to do any improv with the character acting? Or were you never allowed to go off script? I know, as a musician, I can express myself better when I feel free to put my own take on the music. I am a drummer, but never learned how to read or play drum/percussion notes for a song. Because of that, I don't usually ever play a song exactly the same way, twice. Of course, that would not make me a very good studio drummer, since that takes being able to play exactly the same for several takes in a row.

Hi Judy. If these questions are too personal you don’t have to answer. I notice in the 1st season it looked like you had a mark or scar on your left cheek. Just wonder if you had an accident when you were little and hit your head. Also, John & Olivia were the prefect couple, but in real life I noticed almost every cast member got divorced in real life except for Kami and David. Just found that curious.

Judy allow me please to rephrase my question in another way. not necessarily a tragic event but shall we say a very very very difficult time in someone's life that you have acted with while on the Waltons. To the point that you actually felt sorry for them having to be there, due to knowing what they had or were going through. This question isn't limited to just the family, any of the characters and how can you really wash that from your mind and carry on while acting, perhaps being happy even in a scene when in reality for you or others as a human are really down and out................. thanks Toney Dale

Given that shooting the scenes and/or episodes were broken up across several days, did you, as one of the actors, have a good sense of the storyline when you were acting out the parts? Unlike the stage, I would guess the scenes weren't necessarily shot in chronological order of the specific episode, so it would be confusing to me.

Judy what in your mind do you think was the hardest time to have to be on set for yourself or any other cast member, due to some tragic moment that occurred in their own personal life. As in an animal (pet) death, a relatives death, or just something that would make it so difficult to them be on set. I know about Ellen and her struggles, we all do, yet how to say, for any of the other actors. That's an odd ball question I know but life is going on and that film has to keep rolling so I do wonder about this.

Yeah the Tempest/Whirlwind episodes are skips for me. The plotline about Curt was just too out-there and soap opera-like for me, and sticks out as too unrealistic for a show that's otherwise so real. And it makes too many questions like, since he's still alive, does Mary Ellen need to get a divorce now, then will she have the stigma of being a divorced single mom... what if Curt changes his mind later on and wants to come back in their lives, or what happens when John Curtis gets older and finds out... just too many things that make it such a dumb choice!
