I am so glad that Todd brought up growing up in the San Francisco Bay Area. I grew up there as well during the sixties and seventies, and I tell my children that there really wasn't any racism in that area at that time. It didn't make any difference what color you were, in fact, there were so few black people at my junior high, that if you were black, you were pretty popular. My sewing teacher in junior high was black, and I still have fond memories of her. Just sad what society does. Maybe someday we'll all get along and skin color won't matter. Enjoyed the interview.

This was a great interview, Judy. I recently watched “The Wisdom of Solomon” which was the Little House on the Prairie episode that Todd did. The storyline was similar to “The Stray” episode of The Waltons. Todd had two very memorable and thought-provoking lines in that episode. When the teacher, Miss Beadle, asked the children to name something they didn’t like, his answer was “Being a n*****” except he actually used the ‘n’ word. (I hope I don’t get censored for that). In another scene he asked Charles Ingalls if he’d rather be white and live to be 50 or black and live to be 100. He was a wonderful child actor on both Little House and The Waltons and everything else he was in. Thank you for another great video.

Thanks for sharing that line, “grade1teacher”, comparing 50 & 100 with different societal conditions. I’ve rarely seen the show & missed that episode. That’s fine writing & the question can still be applied well to ask when people claim racism is gone. I agree, Todd Bridges has always been a very good actor. Plus, I’m glad he’s had periods without feeling conditions of racism. Though I think one of many indicators of racism nationally was noticeable even passively: As recently as when Oprah aired (through mid-2011) in many markets that was the only time many commercials featured families who were black. Things have improved and more sharing seems critical to keep evolution building. Thanks for teaching, caring and sharing - here, too.

I may be young, but there are a few things I know about the world and how it works. People fear what they don’t understand, and they hate what they fear. Growing up in North Chesterfield, Richmond, Virginia, I have faced discrimination being a young African American. The educational system treated me differently and so did some of the kids my age. When Todd was on Little House on The Prairie, him saying he disliked being a N !! Everybody was speechless in the classroom. And when he asked one of the characters about living to be 100 years old. “Would you rather be black and live to be 100 or white and live to be 50?!” Micheal Landon really pondered that !!

I like how in Todd's episode the character Ike from the general store revealed himself to be a segregationist. Where does he sleep? he asked John Walton, implying in polite white society Todd should have been banned from the household. Ralph Waite's face gave the perfect answer. It was the Depression. Some rules were relaxed. Touching episode.

LOVE his shirt: Whatchoo talkin' 'bout Willis? Great interview! I know Todd Bridges has had his share of problems growing up, and I'm glad to see he's overcome all that as an adult. Regarding racism: When my kids were small (we're white), probably 6 & 7 years old, a black family moved into the apartment next door. They were the Atta Mensa family and came directly from Africa. My kids brought the two little neighbor boys over to introduce them to me. Never once did my kids mention the color of those boys' skin. They just played together like kids are supposed to, and that made me happy.

I’m so happy for Todd that he has made such a success of his life personally and professionally. Great coup getting Mr. Bridges! It was interesting to hear how he came into acting via getting inspired with 'Sanford and Son'! It makes sense that he'd have already been friends with a good number of other African-American performers including his 'adoptive parents' Mr. Williams and Miss Hamilton - and Miss Hamilton had the interesting role in the series playing Dr. Haley's Cousin Georgia who had kept all the oral history alive and inspired him to seek out his African roots (and let's not forget that Verdie DID trace her family to the first place they were brought to in the US and hoped to find her OWN 'deepest' roots)! He's right that a performer needs to do drama first in order to master comedy (and also that comedy is drama with better timing- e.g. a pie in the face is funny to watch but rather annoying to deal with in real life). I hope he's able to get his bio produced one day. Thanks for this!

I liked hearing that Todd did not experience prejudice earlier in his life (i.e. not knowing N-word). I had a similar experience, during elementary school we all intermixed without negative reference to genetic background. When I got to junior high, kids from other elementary schools brought in negative attitudes of Us vs Them regarding skin color. Up until then, prejudice was something that happened elsewhere. People should be evaluated according to their actions, do they strive to be good to others or are they causing harm to others, not anything else. Too bad the Different Strokes reboot never happened. I would have loved to see Todd and Kim do a reverse angle on the first series. We are after all the same race, the human race!

I am so glad you started this channel. We have always enjoyed The Walton's from the very beginning. I noticed how pretty your necklace is, did you make it? It's very unique and I didn't even mention it, but my husband did which he doesn't usually notice. I enjoy the guests you have and it was a pleasure seeing Todd Bridges.

Thank you so much! The necklace was from an adorable little store in St Lucia.

Todd Bridges is a true comeback kid. May his life be filled with love and blessings! I also loved Verdie and the episode John boy was teaching her how to read.

So thrilled you got Todd Bridges on! Todd is such a great talent and sounds like an amazingly rich history. What a great talk. Even though he's been through a lot, he looks and sounds great. I think it's the Walton's Mountain Water. I'd love to see him and Kim Fields in a new Different Strokes.
